Brewing companies, there are many in this neck of the woods, but very unique, one-of-a-kind ones, like this one, rarely do we find one. I happened to find this one while searching for the Empanada Nirvana Food Truck. It just so happened that I found out that the Empanada Nirvana Food Truck was going to be stationed outside the Parkway Brewing Company this past Wednesday during National Empanada Day and so I researched this place to learn more about it. I found out that Parkway Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Salem, Virginia. Established in 2012, it is well known for its distinctive ales and a vibrant tasting room with a large beer garden, live music, and food trucks. It operates a 30-barrel brewhouse, producing a large range of beers from IPA to lagers. Located near the Roanoke Valley Greenway, it attracts runners and cyclists, and has become a community hub for outdoor enthusiasts and beer lovers. When I arrived in my pearl white Lexus, the Empanada Nirvana Food Truck was already parked outside, but had not yet opened, so I went inside the brewery to explore its building. There I found a casual, low-key environment with an industrial-chick interior featuring a fireplace and garage doors that opened to the outdoors, to an area with picnic tables and sun umbrellas. Inside there were also several colorful modern murals and a wide counter where customers went to order and pay for their beers. They had several menus as well as display coolers with some of the beers being sold there. The friendly and knowledgeable young lady behind the counter did an excellent job explaining what they had, including the non-alcoholic options. While going to the restrooms, one passed by a window where you could see the brewhouse. Along the way there were also shelves filled with souvenirs of the place. In the room where the fireplace was, there was also a stage for live performances, which usually took place at night. I loved the ambiance and vive of the place and am looking forward to returning to one of their music live performance and some of their beers, and knowing that they also carry non-alcoholic ones will allow me to enjoy the evening and drive back home safely. read more

Home of the get bent IPA! We were in salem for a menu tasting and got recommended as a must try brewery by our caterer. Needless to say, we enjoyed our time as it had a good atmosphere and is extremely welcoming. They're kid and dog friendly as well! They have an outdoor area that's beautiful and a food truck right outside. Their selection of beers was hard to choose from but I was happy with my Flat top lager! I asked the waitress where I could buy some to take home with me and she told me it wasn't far from here. When we found Parkway there was no place to park this place was packed. This must be the place to be on a Friday night. There was a band playing people sitting around on picnic tables and there was lots of kids, so it kid friendly. Man, if I lived on the residential street that leads up to Parkway Brewing in the charming town of Salem, VA, I'd be in trouble. I'd be there every other day! Parkway Brewing has made quality crafts for years - you can find some of their beers, mostly their high ABV IPA "Get Bent," at many stores in Northern VA. That beer would lead one to believe they are an IPA-heavy place. They're not - they have 2 other IPAs that are lower ABV, including one hazy that I had, and several other varieties such as lager, kolsch, amber ale, and porter. There is ample seating inside and out, and lots of parking. This is probably the only craft brewery with this sort of indoor/outdoor set up (similar to many in Northern VA) in the Roanoke/Salem area, so it does get crowded. Smoking is still a big thing in this part of Virginia, so the smokers have a designated outdoor smoking area. I love the little creek going through the property and the foot bridge you cross. Food truck onsite the day I visited offered BBQ items. I suspect this is a big live band venue too. The band that was playing the night I visited, The Troublesome Blues Band, was awesome, making their way through both covers and what I believe were original songs. A great spot, definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

I have been wanting to get to this place for a while and finally had a weekend where I could go over and check it out. This is a nice brewery. It is in an industrial style building on the outside, but they have done a nice job inside with painting and a huge fireplace. They also have garage doors to go up for outdoor seating, but it was closed the day we went... 55F and rain. There is also a large open area where live music can be played. A musician was setting up on the day we were there. There is plenty of parking and a nice selection of beer. It was heavy on the IPAs when we were there. The guy working the bar was a nice guy and let us sample a few beers and gave some recommendations. I ended up liking the red Reformator the best. It is a red style beer.. unfortunately they don't bottle it. They only have it on draft. I will definitely be back when in the Salem area. read more

Visiting from out of town, creating our own beer crawl, Parkway was the perfect craft brewery pit stop! The ambiance was great! Picnic tables inside & outside, high top tables, a band area w.speakers playing music when there aren't live shows, & a nice yard area to stroll about-it felt very homey. No food, but a food truck on site. Their beer was quite tasty-good IPA variety, with their flagship beer & a few varietals, it was easy to select a few beers for hanging out! Brewery Stop #3 in Virginia Favorite brewery of the day. When my friends and I visited on a Saturday afternoon Parkway had a food truck, band, games and tons of seating available both inside and outside. I was able to try a flight and my favorites were the Raven's Roost Baltic Porter and Majestic Mullet Kolsch. Good beer and space! I do recommend that you check this brewery out. read more

After hiking up McAfee Knob, it seemed an appropriate reward to stop for a beer and a burger. And this place was just too close to pass up. Just down the mountain from the trail, it was a natural stopping point before heading back to my hotel. Situated in a warehouse, it's a great location to hangout, enjoy a beer, and let the kids run free. And they have some live music from local talent to complement the beer. Great relaxing place with a good selection of beer. Check it out after hitting the trail, relaxing by the river, or just driving down I81 looking for something different to do. read more

Popped into Parkway on a cross-country road trip and it was worth the time to be sure. Used the Yelp app to locate a convenient brewery, and off the highway I blazed. Great ambiance, with well put together spaces inside and out. The brews were great, I had 2 IPAs and a stout and really enjoyed each. Rooted in a cool part of town, and really enjoyed spending time at PB and enjoying their well crafted beers... drink local! read more

Got to stop in Roanoke for a bit as we were leaving the Shenandoah Valley and headed back to Charlotte. Parkway Brewing was on out chose course so we twisted our arms and checked it out. Parkway is a full service brewery and has a very large brewing area, taproom, and area to chillout. They don't serve food in-house, but had a great food truck just outside so we could get a bite and enjoy the variety of brews a little longer. I like their beers. Nothing stuck out enough for me to highlight it here, but everything was enjoyable with little or no aftertaste. That's a big plus with me. They had several higher gravity choices, which is very nice as well. I was especially impressed with the artwork they have with beer bottles. Very well done and left a lasting impression: more than the brews even. They have just one serving area so the line got pretty long while we were there. Most folks stood in line to get their drinks and then headed back to the main seating area. It was picnic table style and they had trivia going on when we were there. Seems to be quite popular amongst the locals. I like this place and recommend it if your in the mood for some Virginia craft beer. read more

Great place to hang with friends. The staff was friendly, the beer was great, there was music and yummy burgers from a food truck.

First and foremost: this brewery has the only stout that I have ever liked (Raspberry Raven's Roost) so many kudos - it was light and flavorful compared to most stouts. But no worries, they have a fair selection of tasty brews (pale ales, IPAs (yesyes I know they're both technically pale ales), lagers, etc) so I'm sure you will find something you enjoy. The seating area is open and airy (note: I visited on a pleasant summer day) with plenty of fans and live music. There was also a food truck (BBQ) which I didn't sample but it smelled delicious. Oh! It's dog friendly. I love dogs. And beer. So get thee to Parkway Brewery. read more

Parkway is AMAZING. I came in for a change of pace from quarantine life on a Tuesday (I also just recently moved to the area), and the atmosphere was absolutely inviting and embracing...just as I remember it as a visitor in the past. Bridget (or Bridgette - I'm sorry if I misspelled your name!) is LOVELY, and so, so, so kind - and she absolutely made the atmosphere. The "Save the Galaxy" IPA is 10,000% delicious - and, I must say, even better than their flagship (which, is also TDF - 'To Die For'). It is a seasonal rotation that features in late fall (I asked), so grab it when you can (i.e., STAT). Crowlers are offered (lol), so come soon before their kegs are tapped (by yours truly). So I was hiking the Hanging Cliff trail and it started to rain. I needed somewhere to take cover and I saw this oasis on the horizon! Walked into one of the best local brewers I have ever encountered. Joel was the best beer master! He let me try a couple of things and I was not disappointed. I ended up w a mix of grapefruit and orange ipa. Sounds strange but it was perfection. America (sorry I got you real name... I forgot the name you go by) was such a delight to talk to. Between the two of them I wanted to pack up my bags and move from California. They gave me some great info on the area, and I was ready to head back down the trail. Another great brewery in the Roanoke/Salem area. The beer selection is pretty good. They have seating both inside and outside. Dogs are allowed outside only. They have a separate smoking area which is nice if you don't want to breath that ick. The bathrooms were clean when I visited and the parking was sufficient. I visited on a mid-afternoon on a Thursday and they were pretty busy so my guess is this place is jumping at peak times. read more

I've been here a lot in the past year and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Everything is expertly crafted and executed. The Belgians are especially on point, and the Baltic porter is one of the best examples I've had. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area... Original Thoughts... Southwestern Virginia isn't exactly a mecca for breweries. They are few and far between, and those that do exist aren't of an outstanding caliber. Sufficed to say, there is plenty of room and plenty of market for newbies in the area. And apparently someone finally got the memo. Parkway Brewing Company is the newest kid on the block, joining two other small breweries in Roanoke and just a handful of others within an hour's drive. The Brew Master knows the area, having decided to jump ship from the largest brewpub in town (Roanoke Railhouse) to start his own place along with a likeminded local dreamer. My guess is that they will succeed. The brewery isn't much to look at. It's a warehouse space in the industrial district of Roanoke's next-door neighbor of Salem. They've got the front painted nicely to proclaim the name of the place, but not much else in the way of signing. The parking lot is too small to accommodate the number of drinkers in the moderately sized city. The interior is concrete, mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and everything else needed to produce the wares. A couple of days per week, some ropes are strung, tables put out, and employees man a few taps behind a simple bar. It's not so much a tasting room as a tasting area. However, the tasters are actually tasty. I was fairly impressed with the fledgling brews. The IPA has an intense, distinct citrus note that intrigues for a pint or two, but begins to become wearisome after more. The Belgian pale ale is a wonderful combination of European sweetness with American ingenuity. I might actually be able to drink an entire growler of it. The third beer - just released the day of my visit - is a dark and smoky porter. It is full and rich, but with a nuanced taste profile that gets overwhelmed by the IPA and Blonde if switching back and forth between the three. I need to try it sometime on it's own for a true feel of its flavor. Since the brewery just barely has a tasting area, it certainly does not have a kitchen. The role of food provider is played by a food truck happily sitting away in the parking lot out front. There are at least two that I know of that have taken up residence, and as far as I can tell, both are viable options to say the least. All in all, I look forward to returning here and I think as more beers are developed, the brewery will grow in size and acclaim. The rating for this place is going to undersell it because of their current lack of selection. Once they get more beers on tap and evolve a bit, I think the score will easily bump up to a 4ish range. read more

Came here with my family for a few drinks in the afternoon. The beers were pretty good, we each had a flight. I can't remember what I had, but I remember them being good. There is also a pizza place nearby, so you can get some food while you drink. The atmosphere was okay, the inside was like an unfinished warehouse. Love this place, and for that I wish I could give it more stars. The beer is the best in the valley, the live music and food trucks make for a good experience, and the staff is crazy nice. But where the downfall is, is the "family friendly" atmosphere... basically this means every half assed parents shitty kid runs rampant on the place. They sprint in and out of the brewery barefoot, chuck mud from the little creek out front at one another, and just wreck havoc in general. This makes this place unbearable at times to sit and relax with a great beer and listen to good music. It's a shame read more
