At this point, there is very little shade and you are exposed to direct sunlight. Be prepared by carrying bottled water, sunscreen, hats, comfortable walking shoes, and sun glasses! This popular attraction is built around Mayan ruins in combination with local modern art work and sculptures scattered throughout. Large remnants of an ancient temple reside on one end of the peninsula near a cliff. There are plenty of photo opportunities here! Numerous trails and even a cave can be explored, along with scenic views of the surrounding ocean. If it wasn't so hot out and we weren't so limited in our walking abilities, I would have loved to spend more time searching the trails. I'm sure we missed out on many more sights to see!

It is possible that this "temple" was merely a lighthouse, and that the actual Temple of Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, was somewhere else. When Hernando Cortez got here in 1517, the only inhabitants on the island were the priestesses of the goddess Ixchel, and that's how "Isla Mujeres" (Island of women) got its name. The temple and the surrounding cliffs and sea make for some beautiful and breathtaking views and incredible photos. I saw a review that referred to this temple as "a pile of rocks". Wow. Some people are really hard to please. In my opinion, this temple and the nearby lighthouse are the only things worthwhile on this otherwise overly touristy island.

This place is sooo inexpensive and really tasty! If you're looking for a break from the overpriced hotel breakfasts, this is your place. For 90 pesos ( roughly $4 USD) you get your choice of eggs, meat, OJ, coffee. That's a serious bargain. I mixed it up and got scrambled eggs with chorizo and got Grapefruit instead of OJ and opted out of coffee since it was already so hot outside. They also provide delicious tortillas. Totally worth every penny and more! Back home a basic breakfast like this would have run me close to $17, so it was nice to get a break for breakfast not costing you as much as other meals. The water is pretty calm, so no putting up with massive waves. The pelicans stay a good distance away. There's so many options in staggering distance from this beach for bathrooms, cantinas, drinks, shade, whatever. This is the top end of isla mujeres (island of women.) The other end of Isla Mujeres, across the island from this beach is the easternmost point of Mexico! This beach is free. It's not associated directly with any hotel or restaurant, so anyone can come here, and they do.

Shallow waters make it a perfect beach for enjoying both sand and surf. Many boats will pull up to this beach as well and people will get off and wade up to the beach restaurants/bars. We had minimal seaweed when we were there. Many of the beachfront hotels offer umbrellas and beach chairs. You do not have to be a guest of the hotel to use the umbrellas/chairs. They will charge approximately $150 MEX per chair and umbrella. Pay in Pesos. It cost us $450 for all three. That's only about $23 USD for all day so it's very affordable. The only downside is the constant flow of vendors selling everything from massages to trinkets, to beach towels. Don't be surprised if you see various forms of fully armed Mexican law enforcement. Bottom line - Beautiful beaches, soft sand, and perfect water. What more can you ask for.

This beach is also a lot busier- it's the one that's closest to the ferry terminal, so you get a bunch of touristas who are looking for the first beach, not the best beach. There's plenty of restaurants and bars along here to keep anyone busy. The beach is well-kept, but full of hawkers and touts, people who wanna pester you to see if you wanna hold a monkey or a lobster or something. The nicest thing about this beach is you can look out on the waters and see the Hotel Zone of Cancun. Picturesque! If you go cutting through any of the restaurants or bars, you can access this. Nobody owns the beaches in Mexico, so you can walk where ever you wanna on this beach! The restaurants will let you use their restrooms if you buy a shot.

I wouldn't recommend coming here at full price as it's absolutely not worth it. Instead of…read morerelaxing, you end up spending the entire day standing in endless lines. My husband and I waited 40 minutes at the bar, then 65 minutes for the zipline, and another 50 minutes for snorkeling. There was basically no enjoyment, just constant frustration. We didn't even get a chance to eat, even though it was included in the price. The café closed at 4:00 PM while the park itself stays open until 5:00 PM, which makes no sense. The pool was also very cloudy, like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. We paid 1,000 pesos for two people since we live in Quintana Roo (about 500 pesos per person), and at that price it's somewhat acceptable. But if you're a tourist paying full price, it's honestly not worth it at all. And what really made the experience uncomfortable: while I was in the women's shower/changing area, a woman walked in with her son who looked around 12 years old, right at the moment when I was changing my underwear. When I pointed out that this was the women's area, she said, "He's just a child." That felt completely inappropriate and uncomfortable. It also doesn't seem like staff are enforcing basic rules about access to changing and shower areas.
