Parrs Wood is basically a huge entertainment complex in Didsbury, a rather nice area in the south part of Greater Manchester, about 20mins by bus from the centre.
The main pulls for this centre are the Cinema, Lazer Tag and the Bowling Lanes the rest of the stuff on offer (arcades, pool, bar, cafe) really just acts as a pastime for while you wait about.
The 'Arcades' are a little bit disappointing just a mix bag of the usual fruit machines, car racing machines, coin drop machines. There's nothing new here. And nothing in great quantities either, so the describing this area as an 'Arcade' seems a bit ambitious to me!
There are plenty of pool tables though - around 10 or 12, so you won't have to wait long for one of these. It's £1 a game which I guess is about standard for this sort of place. The tables are medium sized, and there is chalk on offer to buff up your cue.
The bar area reminds me of a bar space at a hotel like The Holiday Inn or something. A raised area which sits in-between the Arcade, Pool and Bowling, it has that mid range-hotel type of furniture and not much soul.
The 10-pin bowling is of course, marvellous fun. Well polished lanes and plenty of bowling balls in various sizes available. The bowling shoes didn't smell either! It was around £6 per person, but when you leave they give you a voucher so next time you visit, once you play & pay for 2 games, you get the 3rd free. BONUS!
The cinema upstairs has 11 screens. I went to see Black Swan at Screen 9, quite a good movie, but i was expecting better. Anyway. There was plenty of leg room in the auditorium and the sound quality was excellent. It was about 1/3 full, and the desk clerks did a good job of making sure everyone was well spread out but in a good viewing position.
Parrs Wood is a good day / night of entertainment; pretty standard stuff really. The staff are helpful and seem to know what they are doing too. read more
