Kids who don't go to "troubled teen" programs usually do fine within a couple years of moving out. If your kid has immediately life threatening issues, then send them somewhere that has actual mental health professionals, transparency, and standards. Utah has so many "troubled teen" facilities because there is no oversight. The facilities restrict kids' phone, internet, and mail access so they can get away with unspeakable abuse.

We thought for sure we had lost our son forever to the wrong group of friends and drugs. With the knowledge and help of all the staff our son turned his life around. He was able to get back on track in school and take ownership of his choices. He even openly admitted at graduation that he would miss so much of the school. The staff always goes above and beyond. They provided a custody evaluation that was so biased and illogical that it should scare any parent that pays them for this service. We all know there are 2 sides to every story. Here is my side: The other party did not follow any of the court mandates and was held in contempt of court twice and prosecuted by the state for violating court orders. Alienation of affection, drug/alcohol abuse, and DUIs were additional issues. I had been granted full custody by the court which was upheld multiple times by 3 judges. At the beginning of the custody evaluation, Therapy Associates initially congratulated my consistency. I had the audacity to answer their questionaire honestly that l felt I was better suited to be the custodial parent because I didn't subject my children to significant risk and harm. In the end, I retained custody but was rebuked and threatened with loss of custody openly in front of the parties for having followed all court orders to the T. Apparently, I was supposed to have ignored what the court ordered and offered whatever flexibility the other party demanded. Therapy Associates stated that they had "thrown out" the other party's test results because of some imagined language barrier. The other party had long been a US citizen (which required an English proficiency test) had been a US resident, fluent in English for approximately 16 years. They ignored the obvious conclusion of the testing including all the court and police records. They offended my person and parenting without cause. I can't believe I paid thousands of dollars for such unprofessional and biased crap. Therapy Associates, you get ZERO stars from me.
