Poor quality in finished product. She's very heavy handed, the pigmentation of the tattoo seems fine until it heals and then you see the flaws. Doesn't seem to use the correct needles for line work. Final headed product very patchy and scarred. Disappointing how expensive and time costly this artist is and how that isn't translated into the final piece. read more

I had this done end of December and was still waiting for it to heal before I contacted Pat. A picture is worth a thousand words. The top part is elegant and was done by Gold Rush in Orange County. The Cora name added is blotchy, heavy handed and a disaster. I ask Pat about getting it removed and she told me it was my fault because my skin was old....and maybe it was below the tee-shirt line and suggest my arm was like a biker and it got more sun than above. All very poor illogical reasons and no excuse for this shoddy work. I asked her the name for tattoo removal and she claimed she didn't know. I have pretty mixed feelings about my experience at Tattoo Santa Barbara. First off, I was very young at the time, and it was my error for knowing next to nothing about what I was getting. In fact, it was a coincidence that not only did I choose a tattoo - Dragon - that was my lunar astrological sign - birth year (no clue at the time), but the Kanji that I chose also had a much stronger connection to my life once I discovered it's proper meaning many years later. (at the time, I believed that it said "Hero" but in Chinese, the meaning was much more elaborate - would have been nice to know!) My opinion is that Pat is really not the correct artist to go to for a non-Celtic or Tribal tattoo which is clearly her specialty - particularly something in an Asian style. Not knowing that tattoos existed like those that we now see from the likes of the irezumi masters in Japan and sometimes in California - I went with what I thought was a cool piece. And in fact - it was. But "cool" is not enough for a lifetime tattoo. The Kanji was placed a little too close to the dragon, but I approved the design in advance, and had very little aesthetic sensibility. Not Pat's job to warn me, or educate me. Or advise me. As to whether it should be - that's up to each person and what they want in an artist. In comparison - my present tattoo artist spent about 5 hours with me, working on various designs before I actually started the process. What I suppose I should have had done was to ask Pat to create a special tattoo just for me. But instead I chose something out of a book of Hong Kong style tattoo flash that seems to have originated with Ricky Tattoo in Wan Chai (where I coincidentally lived years later). In any event, I can say that Pat is very knowledgeable about tattoo hygiene, cleanliness, aftercare, etc. and she should leave you with confidence. I will also say that she was very sarcastic - and more than a little condescending at times. But I was young, and who knows what I might have said to set her off - she does have a very strong personality. I won't go as far as to say that she was terribly rude, but I was left feeling like she did me a favor by tattooing me. At the end of the session, she told me off for not giving her a tip. At 21 I didn't know that you were supposed to tip a tattoo artist. Of course, I immediately added one to the total amount which was very reasonable to begin with. There was very little pain - if anything - during the actual tattoo session. Nothing compared to the Japanese artist I go to now. So I think anyone can feel confident about Pat in this area despite that fact that I was always hearing complaints about her hurting people she supposedly didn't like or non-Female customers (as if she had a hate-on for men) when I lived in Santa Barbara. I highly doubt that any of that was true. More like sour grapes from people that she rubbed the wrong way (no pun intended). The result was extremely colorful, and attractive for what it was. Essentially a copy of a copy of a Japanese tattoo, done in that very pop-art Hong Kong style. My choice at the time. And it brought me many years of happiness. And many, many compliments until the color began to fade around 7-8 years later. Normal, and I had it recolored in Japan in the traditional way - tebori. But I guess the bottom line is that it was a mediocre tattoo. This is not to say that Pat is not capable of something more elaborate, detailed, etc. But for me, as my understanding of great tattoo art grew over the years - I felt that I had perhaps made an error. I debated lasering it off this year in preparation for a more extensive piece but my new artist came up with a fantastic - truly brilliant way to integrate it, so part of Pat's work will stay with me forever. Bottom line is that I was probably the wrong match for Pat, and vice versa. Still, she did what I asked with little to no pain. Certainly a super sterile environment and equipment - with perfect aftercare instructions. Her videos on youtube give you a good idea as to her knowledge, personality, etc. - suggest you watch them before going over or booking an appointment. read more

I like to read and research before I jump into any project, and obviously a tattoo needs to be considered. So during one of my trips to Border's, I happened by the magazine section and grabbed a few of the tattoo magazines. I didn't pay too much attention to the one that had a big article about this lady that does all this research into her designs, pays attention to her customers, and goes out of her way to make sure each tattoo is special and perfect for the person she's tattooing. I must've read the article about four times by the time I finally got around to reading it. I decided to give Pat a call, and about two phone calls later I had agreed to my first $50 installment/consultant fee/okay, this is really going to happen deposit! A few phone calls later, she agreed to open up on a Monday for me because I flew in from Chicago. Prior to my tattoo she made gave me specific instructions on what I could do to make the experience as pleasurable as possible. Loose clothing, vitamins, etc. Very thorough! Just before I got my tattoo, she made me watch a video that helped explained the process. My arm-band took 4.5 hours and it's worth every minute. In my head, I was cool, calm, and collected, and engaged in witty banter through the whole process. In reality, I was probably white as a ghost and ready to pass out at any given moment, and probably would have had I not been lying down. But that's been several years ago (2003) and my memory has started to fade. I'm going to stick with stoic during the experience. Okay, I can't even do that because Pat made me get up half-way through because she needed a break, and she said that I needed oxygen before I was going to pass out. After my tattoo, she made me watch an exit video that further explained what she'd already told me about after-care, protection, and preservation of my new tattoo. I'm contemplating another intricate Celtic design, and I think that's just going to mean that I need to plan another vacation to Santa Barbara! read more

My journey in Celtic art and tattoos began about 15-20 years ago in NJ. That is when I stumbled across the name Pat Fish and from that day, I have hoped I could get her artwork on my body. For some odd reason I didn't realize how close Santa Barbara was from San Diego once I moved out here. Then, I emailed her one day and she let me know that it was only 3 hours away, and she actually had availability that weekend on both days (WHAT!?!?! Rare, and definitely a sign). I booked both days, and planned to act on a life long journey. Don't tell my wife, but this journey hasn't ended! Saturday I met with her and her assistant Colin at the studio. I showed them ideas I was looking at, the reason for the art, and they pulled out designs I had seen on her site, and ones I didn't. Then it came out of the file! "THAT'S IT!" I knew it right away; I knew the meaning and what it meant to ME. I had other ideas but this was the moment when you knew you wanted nothing else. Pat and Colin immediately went to work, we conferred on every aspect of the design and off we went! Pat tattooed nonstop for hours, only to take a short tea break (I was MORE THAN HAPPY to take a break as well). She made a recommendation about a certain shading technique that I kind of understood what she meant, but when I saw it completed it was brilliant. Anytime someone of her caliber recommends something, they are the artist and you are the canvas. LISTEN TO THEM!!!! Took Pat out to sushi afterwards, and said goodbye until the next day. Colin left early due to another engagement, so he missed out on some great food! The next day, Colin was there at noon, getting everything ready to go, and Pat is there within minutes. That day pat was going to freshen up a tattoo I have gotten back in NJ years ago. Colin said it best when pat was done. He said that it looked like someone had knocked the dust off a stained glass window. He was absolutely right. I got into my truck all bandaged up, smiling all the way to San Diego. Just to show how a tattoo and a meaning behind it are important, once I explained the significance of the tattoo, and the significance of Pat doing the work, my mother loved it. A woman who in her earlier years in life who wanted to hang me by my unmentionables when I got my first tattoo. One thing I wanted to mention that threw me off. When I got there the first day, I saw how involved Colin was and Pat even mentioned in her website that he would be. I tipped before I even sat in the chair, not just Pat, but Colin as well. He is a non-stop work machine. If Pat needed something he had it within seconds so Pat wouldn't have to stop. She just kept on tattooing. Colin later thanked me again for the tip. He said he doesn't get tipped much, which threw me off. If there is someone like Colin (very involved in the process) who makes it easier for the artist to continue working, that person should be tipped as well. Just my thoughts. It was a pleasure spending the weekend at the shop, and like the sign says, if you tip in advance that tattoo won't hurt as much. I can't say enough about this experience. Just so people dont ask me about why I rated her low in the price range, here is my reasoning. Tattoos are forever. They are an experience. And when done by someone as talented in their field as Pat, once you truly know what you want, price shouldnt be a deal breaker for you. Dont go to a hamburger joint expecting a cheap filet mignon, and dont go to a nice steak house expecting burger joint prices. I will be back soon to get my tattoo finished, and add a new piece. I spoke to Pat over the phone to make my appointment and to give her my credit card info. She really got a kick out of my last name, and wanted to incorporate part of it into my tattoo, but I was set on what I wanted. I got my very first tattoo here, too! I wanted something celtic-themed, as did someone I was close friends with at the time, and we decided to get tattooed together as a bonding experience. I did research, and learned that Pat Fish is considered one of the best celtic tattooists in the world. She was also recommended by a friend who is a tattooist on the East Coast. I brought in a design someone else had worked on for me. She looked at it and said, "Nope. Let me rework this for you." She asked me a few questions as to why I wanted it, and sketched out a tattoo using the same themes, but ten times better than anything I ever imagined. She did a fantastic job. Now, Pat's a personality, and you'd better know that going in. She (and her dogs!) is larger than life. She's strong-willed - and so am I, which I thought would go badly, but for some reason it didn't. Yes, she costs an arm and a leg. If you want celtic ink and you're east of the Rockies, well, you should think about booking a flight to California. I have three tattoos (currently) and the Pat Fish piece is still my favorite. This weekend my very dear friend and I spent my Birthday in Santa Barbara. At 49 I got my very first Tattoo (so did my my Girlfriend). I have been planning this for years and knew as soon as I reviewed the Art 10 years ago on Pat's site she was the artist for me. Very talented she just knows what looks good where. I just went back to Pat and her design partner Colin for tattoo #2, nearly 10 years after my first ink from Pat. I wanted a custom job, based on an image I had in my head of some of the oak trees in my mom's backyard growing out of a kerbstone from Newgrange (5,000 year-old neolithic tomb/worship site in Ireland) in a tree-of-life design with Celtic knot work. Oh yeah, and the roots of the tree should kinda be coming out of the rock...but not really, you know? They just smiled, took the pics I sent of my mom's oaks, the sketch I did with my roughly kindergarten-level art skills, and some images from their own archives and came up with a design that made me go "AAAAhhh...EEEEEeeee...THAT'S IT!!!" A line moved here, a slight tweak to a stone carving there, and they had it down. Then it was four hours in the chair being tormented. But oh, so worth it. I sent a pic to a friend and she said "WOW, do you like it?" and I, hopped up on pain-induced endorphins, was like "*^&!@!! I do! I freaking LOVE it." Take note: this not a "cruise in and get your boyfriends name on your tatas" kind of place. Or rather, if she has time, I'm sure Pat would be happy to...but she's in high demand as one of the top Celtic-style tattoo artists in the world. So you plan ahead and put a deposit down online, then Pat or Colin will call you to set up a time for a consultation and then the installation. I live a five-hour drive away, so I HAPPILY took some vacation time, did the design consultation one day and then the installation the next day, taking in some Santa Barbara sites before and after my appointments. ALSO-this is art, folks, and art costs money. If you call and ask "how much will a tattoo be", you'll probably be told (based on my own experience and observations) that they just can't guesstimate until you've agreed on design, colors, size, etc. So bring that credit card along and just roll with it...you will never, ever regret being art at this level. Besides, you get what you pay for. When the delishuss agony was nearly over, Pat had me go stand up and near a mirror in the shop for a final inspection. I was like "HELL YEAH, IT'S PERFECT!" but Colin took a good 10 minute ogle from a variety of directions, then USED A LASER POINTER to note a couple of minute spots that needed a slightly stronger line thickness, or a touch more shading for balance. Back in the chair... zzzzz....zzzz....re-inspection...you get the idea. I said to him "I never would have noticed those" and he replied "This is the kind of thing we obsess over". Bottom line: Get your blank self into the chair and let the Lady do her thing. Pain is temporary. Art is for the ages. Seriously-I hope my heirs use the skin on my arm for something awesome after I die. read more

She spent about 6 hours completing her work of art on my arm. I couldn't be happier with the results!!! I'm writing this review as an informational tool for someone considering or getting a First Tattoo as I did. First let me say that it is a very important decision, and one that you have to live with for the rest of your life so in that quality is important. Pat and Colin do amazing work hands down, I mean Celtic art is such a small niche, I only found one guy in Dublin, Ireland doing it but did not have a portfolio like Pat's. Plus Colin is amazing with the computer work for customization, sizing, and placement, and Pat is a master of Celtic art, there are few artist that could do the shading in the right places for the Celtic art. Now my warnings, due to the quality Pat is more expensive than many of the artists, I figure the $600 I paid was money well spent because I'm happy with the work, but it's roughly 3 times more than one might pay at an average Tattoo studio. Also be aware that they require around a $200 deposit which is not refundable, plus I optioned to tip her $70 bucks on top prior. So basically once you put the deposit down you are pretty much locked in. Here after care videos (which are online) are very helpful I followe the lotioning with the non-fragrance lotion religiously. The one thing that is not emphasized in the video is the use of anti-bacterial soap after peeling off the plastic wrap to prevent an infection. I had friends that helped me and told me to not have direct water hitting it but let it trickle and use anti-bacterial soap, then dab dry with a paper towel. Pat was very nice, the actual inking took about an hour fifteen, 30-40 minutes of prep and the stencil transfer. My big issue with the experience was when Pat was putting the medical bandage on my arm after the inking was done. I could swear there was a spot of dried blood on on the bandage prior to her applying it to my arm, but before I could say anything she had it on my arm already. After leaving the studio, I took the bandage off and tried to dribble water down my arm to wash off anything that might have been on the bandage. I emailed Pat and she swears that the bandage comes from a sealed container, and proposed that the blood spot might have been my own that was transferred when she had been adjusting the bandage. I really don't know, but I'm being cautious and I'm getting my blood tested, which unfortunately costs $219, but you can't be too careful these days. Anway, to sum up this is a very important life-long decision and hopefully this will help you out. I had planned on getting the Celtic Tattoo 2 years prior and was impressed with Pat's portfolio. I'm happy with the work. I do think it was on the expensive side(and deposit requirement a bit unfair), with the tip and now the blood test; it cost in total close to $1000. Just make sure you make an educated informed decision, considering all the factors, talk to your friends that have tattoos because there are some things that you would not have thought of. And make sure you are comfortable with the studio, ask questions, and have no doubts. read more

Nothing but praise for Pat & LuckyFish. Having followed her from afar and for close to 2 decades I finally decided to take the drive and visit her in Santa Barbara. So glad I did. The artwork she laid for me is everything I dreamed about and more. The work itself speaks volumes to her skill. The line work is outstanding. Flawless. Her experience is clear and obvious when you see her work. Its been less than a week so my work is still healing but the compliments are more than plentiful. I booked online about two weeks out and made the deposit [required] to make an appointment. Since I wanted something custom and not off the wall or some other website I made a visit the day before my actual session. Meeting with Colin, her assistant, was comfortable. He is very helpful and seamlessly weaved my ideas and parts of multiple pieces into one. From there Pat drew the final piece that night. Like I said, it was everything I asked for. I would without hesitation recommend Santa Barbara Tattoo to anyone considering a Celtic style inking. The studio is easy to find being right on the main drag. It is convenient because it is literally just a few minutes and blocks off of Highway 101. Downtown Santa Barbara is minutes down the street where you can find lots of shopping and dining options. The beach is a few minutes further. Parking is limited to the street so keep an eye on the signs and mind your time accordingly. Beyond happy and would happily return anytime. I currently have 4 tattoos done by Pat and plan to get more. She is a true artist and it shows in her work: comparing her techniques versus other tattoo artists work shows it straight away. Her 'speciality' is Celtic work and Pat is still at the top of her game. Whether you want Celtic or not, Pat is a true artist and is worth the drive to Santa Barbara. Colin is knowledgable and will help nail down what you're after. Pat will ask questions about your tattoo and if you listen to her, you won't be sorry. Her recommendations to me have always been spot on. For those who complain about her prices, you get what you pay for!!! I have no problem paying for her talent, artistic vision and experience. The permanent ink you paid $40 for is probably looking pretty crappy right about now. read more

If you want to discuss creation and manifestation of the FINEST CELTIC TATTOO to be had anywhere on this planet, you must include Pat Fish in the conversation. I have 3 pieces of art from her I wear proudly everyday. One when I was but a wee lad of 22, then again at age 39 and again at 41 years old. The oldest is still vibrantly colorful and the most recent is good enough to get in a Tattoo magazine (German I beleive..)from across the pond. Seeing my tattoo which we designed together was a source of reaffirmation-not that I needed anyone elses opinion. So if you wish to become art with knotwork, celtic influence, personal design, consideration and no nonsense- have her do it. Worth every cent- she is a consumate professional. I was just telling my co-worker about my experience 20 years ago getting my first tattoo..... Her name was PAT FISH, I told him.... I got a small tribal sun on the side of my lower leg (between the ankle and calve). This evil woman, who was a well known artist, Pat Fish hammered my leg so hard she hit the bone throughout the tattoo. The scar tissue from this jacked up tattoo itched for several years after. A few years after I went to this masochistic Bi**tch, I had a second tattoo done (NOT by her) and the tattoo artist said, "What the hell did this lady have against you?" I said, "Nothing I know of, I just met her that day." His reply was that, she had to of INTENTIONALLY hurt me. That NO experienced artist would hit bone unless it was on purpose. My advice to you if you're reading this is.... FIND ANOTHER ARTIST... You might catch this FISH on a bad day... and then you'll be the one telling the story of your jacked up tattoo!!! By the way~ my tattoo looks like sh*t! Scar tissue distorts the tattoo. read more
