A deep dark…read morewoods The name Copicut does indeed mean a deep, dark woods in the Wamponoag language. It's really not all that dark and deep and in fact it's a rather lovely and open hike through 516 acres of ancient forest, cedar swamps and great old stone walls. Since there are lots of streams and little ponds in the area there is plenty of wildlife. Frogs, turtles, salamanders, coyotes, deer, chipmunks and a wide variety of birds can be seen here during different times of the year. The whole area use to be a farming village in the 19th century but that is long gone. There are lots of very cool foundations and old rusty metal things as well as a huge carriage road through the woods that is lined with stone walls and has a cover of trees. A very beautiful and stunning place, especially in the snows of winter. But of course like most old ghost towns in New England, Copicut Woods has a lot of spooky tales about it. Strange noises, ghostly apparitions and unusual and ethereal mists that suddenly appear. Of course we didn't see anything strange, just a very lovely woods and some great historical artifacts of a time long gone. A really lovely place for a hike anytime of the year but it does get very, very buggy in the spring. There are maps at the trail head but they are less than accurate and getting lost is pretty easy. It doesn't really matter, the trails and old carriage roads eventually lead somewhere and sometimes not knowing where exactly the journey will end is the most fun of all

This cute little square in the Fox Point section of Providence is known to many locals and…read moreresidents as a nice little place to relax while walking in the area. Fenner Square's name commemorates Rhode Island's 4th Governor Arthur Fenner and his son, Rhode Island Governor and Senator James Fenner. Initially known as "What Cheer Farm," the Fenner estate extended from Hope Street and Power Street to the Seekonk River in the early 17th century. Close to the park was a horse stable and the workers there would walk the horses around the triangular plot of land, which was then known as "Heater Park" (Preservation RI). Fenner Square had fallen into disrepair a few years ago...then about 5 years ago, a group of neighbors wanted to bring the surrounding community together and transformed it into the picturesque gathering place that it is today. They started weeding and pruning, creating space for the roses. They added a brick path and with help from the city's tree planting program, created shade for sitting. With a bucket brigade from a nearby house, the neighbors creatively figured out a way to water the plants without a formal water source. Since then, painted stones and thank you letters have cropped up at the park. It is an unexpected encounter for the ordinary passersby. Couples will sit on the benches and occasionally the neighbors will host community gatherings throughout the summer. A scenic plaza at the intersection of Governor and Williams streets, now Fenner Square is the perfect spot for a pleasant stroll or outdoor picnic. We have enjoyed many lazy afternoons here.

The small urban park was designed as a memorial to Robert E. Freeman (1948-1992), the former…read more executive director of the Providence Foundation, where he was committed to revitalizing the downtown Providence business district. It's located next to the Hotel Providence and across from Grace Church, so it's a nice place to relax when you are shopping on Westminster street. The Park is just a few hundred square feet in size, but it contains a distinctive fountain sculpture with benches and tables spread across it. These features along with the identity that the Robert E. Freeman Park name represents have created opportunities for surrounding business and allowed it to cultivate a great deal of activity. Many events have taken place in the park as well as a central meetup place for many groups.

The George Redman Linear Park is really something... especially for those of you that remember the…read morevery narrow and somewhat dangerous old bike lane that used to reside in this very space. The park was officially dedicated during a ceremony back in September 2015 and I for one, am extremely excited to be able to enjoy the space. George Redman was an East Providence resident who was a leading force in the creation of the East Bay Bike Path... a fitting honor. The Linear Park spans the entire 1,800 foot long Washington Bridge and affords ample views of the Seekonk River. Though each end of the bridge is closed in and protected from the highway with tall gating... the middle opens up to wonderful water views that include the East Providence Yacht Club, Brown University's Boat House, and India Point Park (in fact, on my most recent trip, I got a bird's eye view of Brown's Crew team practice). This is a space where both cyclists and foot traffic can live in harmony. The East Bay Bike Path that originates in India Point Park, immediately joins this park via a meandering slope near the Wyndham Garden Providence Hotel. The 11 foot wide path allows cyclists to comfortably maneuver the first of many water crossings on the 14.5 mile trip to Bristol's Colt State Park. This is a massive improvement from the old bike path where two people could barely cross paths walking, never mind biking. The foot traffic has equal if not more space to enjoy within the park. The stamped brick path that delineates this space is separated from the bike path by an unobtrusive chained barrier. There is plenty of seating, a mix of park benches and U-shaped concrete nooks. The street lights give off an old-fashioned vibe and the whole atmosphere is open and inviting. For the most part, the cars from the highway provide an almost "white noise" effect. I myself usually have earbuds in and any distraction the cars could potentially cause is immediately tuned out. As an East Providence resident, I am so grateful to have this space back again (after the 3 years it was under construction). It is a great place to get outside, breath in the fresh air, and be active! It is nice to see so many others doing the same as this warm March month delivers us into spring.

I went and walked around the park and it was simply beautiful peaceful place. The moments where…read moreamazing the flags of glory were flying they had moments for the gold star family tribute to the Vietnam veterans the wall was outstanding the names of are brave heroes are engraved on it. Then you have the Iwo Jima memorial such a beautiful tribute to the Marines who sacrificed their lives for the freedom we have. definitely worth a visit.

The Trestle Trail, a section of the Washington Secondary Trail, is a wooded section of 'bike path'…read morethat connects the western end of the Coventry Greenway to the Moosup Valley Trail in CT. It follows an abandoned rail corridor and is part of the East Coast Greenway project which will ultimately link 25 urban cities between Maine and Florida. Well, that sounds like a challenge. We were able to visit on a beautiful autumn afternoon. There were lots of people out enjoying the day. Dog walkers (remember to bring your doggie poop bag to pick up after them please!) bike riders, folks on rollerblades, families, couples. This seems to be a popular outing location. There is a parking spot at 210 Flat River Road, and another, closer to CT, at 51 Hill Farm Road. The trail is paved, with the usual policy of walk on the left, ride on the right meaning you can see the bikes approaching you and get off the road for them to pass if there is no room to go around you. There is also a horse trail running along the sides in this section. From the lot on Hill Farm Road, following the path toward CT, you pass a large pond with small waterfall (which you can hear, but not see as it flows away from the path), then becomes wooded along both sides for quite a while. It does cross over or under a couple of roadways and a few houses but for the most part is a nice walk in the woods. Heading back toward Coventry/Warwick from this same parking lot, the path leads through more populated areas passing behind businesses and homes, although still wooded on one or both sides for a fair amount of time, passing by a camp ground and another lake. There are a couple more places to park along the Washington Secondary Trail path that are closer to town, including near the Coventry Library and behind the Paine House museum on Station Street. This link makes a nice way to commute on your bike within town and a lovely outing for family or place to get in your steps.
