We go every year to the kite festival. Awesome event that the kids love and the adults can catch some sun. Highly recommend if you have kids or just like kites.

While on a trolly tour we passed this state park and knew we had to go back to check it out. The views of the ocean are beautiful and you could easily stay for the afternoon and just chill and enjoy the views. There are several things to observe and learn about. We enjoyed a long walk while watching the waves crash along the rocks.

Gorgeous! Free parking and so much lawn and shore! Fishing off the rocks. Sometimes a truck selling kites. There is a bathroom when the building is open. So so so pretty!!

Beautiful park that everyone should try to visit when they are going to Newport. I can stay here for hours just looking at the open wide skies & crashing waves. So relaxing here. I see a few flying kites & having their little picnic by the water. The beach here is more rugged with rock formations & bigger waves. We happen to leave about sunset time & the view is amazing. One of the unforgettable spots during our newport visit.

Brenton Point is on the famous Ocean Drive in Newport-its at about the mid-way point. Its notorious for kite flyers and even have a kite store on site. Lots of parking and you can cross the street to get a better ocean view and snag a bench to take it all in. Dels truck is usually here as well. A beautiful spot in RI no matter the season.

This nice park at the southwestern tip of Aquidneck island is just a beautiful place to walk, sit by the benches and look out to the open ocean. Nice rock formations create almost a slate of rock protruding onto the wavy ocean, making this area, a beautiful setting for watching the waves. Usually the weekend after July 4th is reserved for the Kite Festival which brings all kinds of kites of all shapes, colors and lengths. Festival goers being their own as well, creating a sea of kites up on the blue skies. Just a relaxing way to spend some time in Newport.

Brenton Point State Park sits on Ocean Drive where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The park also features the Portuguese Discovery Monument, a tribute to navigators. It's windy here and a great place to fly a kite.

Brenton Point has to be one of my favorite areas in Newport. Regardless what time of year it is, this park has the best views and it always seems that something is going on. There are loads of people flying kites, an occasional food truck, and tons of people enjoying this beautiful area. I have enjoyed many amazing sunsets here and seen lots of different weather events causing some impressive waves crashing against the rocks. If you live in this area and haven't been here, why not? If you are in the area visiting, then this place is an absolute must! Either way you will not be disappointed!!!

Sometimes you just need to sit in nature and admire its beauty. This place truly brought me so much peace and I can't wait to visit again. We were visiting from Louisiana and decided to drive over from Massachusetts to Rhode Island...we landed in Newport and decided to trek it down Ocean Drive for the breathtaking views and a gorgeous sunset at Brenton Point State Park. This place is an absolute must visit!

Located on breathtaking Ocean Drive in Newport RI where you will find some of the most spectacular views on the East Coast. I always say how fortunate I am to live here in RI and be surrounded by such beauty. The park is not overly huge, but it's a beautiful place to come for a picnic, fly a kite, relax on a blanket or just sit back and take it all in. There are several monuments on the grounds and plenty of parking. Kite flying is huge here. There is always a trailer on the property selling kites. I have never driven through here and not seen them flying. Not only can you feel the breeze from the salty ocean air, you can smell it!! Definitely a must see in RI.

Good views, nice long trail to walk, and plenty of flat space for picnicking! There were a couple of porta potties next to a building on the trail, they definitely needed some cleaning when we stopped in, but they by far weren't the worst ones I've ever seen.

Breathtaking views along ocean drive. Worth the stop to walk around on the rocks and take beautiful pictures. Quiet and scenic. Best of all the tranquility is free!!!

Brenton Point State Park is one of the most spectacular ocean views in Newport, RI. The park itself boasts prime kite flying conditions for enthusiasts all over. Don't think I've ever driven through here on Ocean Drive and not seen a kite flying in the sky or being prepared to. I was very envious of the grey shark I saw flying overhead on my most recent visit. The rolling fields are ideal for picnics though the wind off the water may thwart any attempt at eating warmed food. Educational signs review simple ocean life including that of "common periwinkles." Signs state "to stay off rocks" yet there are stairs leading down to them. . . so I helped myself. Many were roaming the rocky shore, jumping over crevices and being mindful of the slippery seaweed left by the waves. The salty air, waves crashing through worn rock, water blasting into the air and covering patrons with a fine mist of ocean. Peaceful and adventurous area, great for both tourists and residents of the area.

Is there a kite festival there every summer? We lucked out twice when we happened across it with no advanced knowledge. Where is it advertised?

Robin, There is a kite festival every summer the first weekend after the 4th of July. They have a nice Facebook page that had a big countdown to the big weekend! Check it out!

I grab a Del's, fly a kite, dip my toes in the water and then crash out on a blanket in the grass right by the water's edge.

I started visiting the 40 steps. There were a lot of people crowding the steps and taking photos. I enjoyed this part of the walk and would repeat again in the future if I came with friends. To get to the next session of the walk there is a detour that brings you by the next block and to the next entrance. I found the next section to be the smoothest walk and very scenic. After that, you see signs that there is some rugged terrain. You also get signs that you pass at your own risk and a reminder that you are passing through private properties. I highly suggest you wear proper footwear as there are some rocky sessions and uneven ways. If it is hot, you may want to bring water and wear sunscreen. Also check the map as there are sessions where it is clearly marked that the closest exit is some distance away. Still worth the walk as you get magnificent views and glimpses the back of some mansions/houses along the way. I exited at the Ledge Road exit.

Even though the technology has greatly improved over the years and centuries, the idea is hardly new. Wind power has been used in New England for a long time and was frequently used to power the old grist mills. A few of the old windmills managed to survive and Paradise Park has one of the finest examples still around. The mill was built back in 1810 and was used to grind corn and is a great example of a smock mill that has numerous sloped sides. It originally had four vanes but was increased to eight over the years to improve efficiency. The mill stood a bit further north in Portsmouth but was restored and moved to Paradise Park in 1990. The mill is open one day a year in Sept but can be seen all year long in the park. The rest of Paradise Park is pleasant, with a few short hiking trails and benches and places to sit and relax. Some concerts are held here in the summer and the historical society is right next door. There are a lot of parks in Rhode Island and quite a few windmills but this is the only windmill in a park that I know of. A lovely place to see a part of the past that is quickly becoming the vision of the future.
