Especially the upper level of it, which has the playground. As you wind up the pathway (which is a one way street), you go higher and higher. It brings back old memories when I used to visit Paris mountain in Greenville, SC. Secoundly, picnic areas are all over the park, both in the upper and lower levels, with the biggest one overlooking the lake. And what a large and beautiful lake it is!! Lastly, there is a very well paved pathway that encircles the lake, which provides a 2 mile walk. It's great for anything from alone time to family time.

Our RV spot was spacious, but not very level. We did look around at the other spots in the campground and noticed many that required multiple cinder blocks and many more that required lots of extra blockage due to being not level to the extreme. The bathhouse was clean and in good condition. Lots of large trees in the campground make it nice and shady, but also make maneuvering a bit challenging depending on the size of your RV/rig and the spot you have booked. Photos of the campground and park were slightly misleading - we thought we could swim in the lake. After checking it out on arrival, we quickly realized it was more of an algae filled pond that would be appropriate for fishing but dangerous for anything else. The water was stagnant, not overflowing or moving down to the creek bed below which was mostly dry. Lots of fishing gear was left behind on the shore area with some fish hooks abandoned in places you'd probably be walking if you tried to swim. The building in that area was in poor condition with broken windows. Hiking trails were available within the campground but Kings Mountain itself is a very long distance away. We have smaller dogs, not up for that distance and we didn't opt for a hike that long to actually get to Kings Mountain. The town of Kings Mountain itself is a 10 minute drive away. Also worth noting wi-fi is available in the campground store only, and there is almost NO cell signal in the rest of the park. I had a hard time just downloading a kindle book, which requires hardly any bandwidth. If you're looking for a remote woodsy location and you are up for the challenge of a site that is not level, here's your spot!

Camp spots are nice when they are nice, but beware of those that are not level. As of now #34 is a bear of a challenge. We were lucky ot is off season and got to move. Rarely do we have to move a spot, thankful they could accommodate with a small upcharge. Playground is fun, trails are good and it is easily accessible from the interstate across the Stateline in South Carolina.

Access is right off W…read moreGrover Street and from there you're on the First Broad River Trail, a 2.9-mile out-and-back natural surface path that follows the First Broad River the whole way. Easy terrain, minimal elevation, and completely free. The 120-foot suspension bridge is the centerpiece of the trail and it does not disappoint. Crossing it over the river with water views in both directions is genuinely nice, and kids absolutely love it. Beyond the bridge the trail continues under the historic railroad trestle which adds another layer of character to the whole experience. There are several smaller wooden bridges along the way as well and the trail crosses under Highway 74 at one point. Worth knowing there's actually a second trail access point near Ingles for those looking for a different starting spot. The natural surface is well maintained for the most part though a few spots can get muddy after heavy rain, so plan accordingly. Dogs are welcome on a leash. Wildlife is around if you pay attention, deer tracks along the river are common. Spring is said to be especially good for wildflowers along the banks. Open daily from 6am to 9pm. No restrooms on site. A really solid piece of trail infrastructure for a city this size. Shelby should be proud of this one.

This is a smoothly paved 1.5 mile loop trail that covers the ground where the Battle of Kings Mountain took place on October 7, 1780. Considered by Thomas Jefferson, "The turn of the tide of success" this decisive military battle pitched the Patriot forces, known as the Overmountain Men, against the American loyalist militia that was led by British Major Patric Ferguson. Ferguson was killed in the battle and nearly 700 of the Loyalists were taken prisoner. I would consider this slightly harder than easy as there are some inclines. There are benches and captions and a telephone audio tour along the way, so plenty of opportunities for breaks. The site was designated a National Military Park in 1931 and before that, hosted major commemorative events including a speech by President Herbert Hoovery in 1930. There is a gift shop (of course) with mementoes. They also host a breech-loading rifle demonstration if that's something that interests you. Lots of parking and plenty of shade. Although small in the scope of mountain size, it holds a huge place in the history of the country. Kings Mountain was the site of an important battle in the southern campaign of the Revolutionary War. Although I had only one Revolutionary War ancestor from South Carolina, the campaign is particularly interesting for me. It was brutal with those who fought in South Carolina being loyalists & patriots who were previously friends & neighbors. Such was the case with the Battle of King's Mountain, fought on October 7, 1780. Led by British Major Patrick Ferguson the loyalists outnumbered the patriots who were a group of volunteers called the Overmountain Men. The group mustered in Abingdon, VA and crossed the Appalachian mountains on horse & foot, adding to their ranks by individuals along the way, to the battle site in Western South Carolina. They weren't experienced soldiers. But they knew the mountain ways and weren't at all frightening by Ferguson's threats, In the end it was a decisive patriot victory with Ferguson being killed & buried on the mountain. A large tombstone was erected along the path up what is more of a hill than mountain. Thomas Jefferson called the victory "The turn of the tide of success." On the day I visited it was very hot. My Golden Girl & I quickly went through the Visitor's Center to the path up the mountain. I felt as if I were walking the path of history as we trudged the hilly path to the monument at the top of the hill. We stopped at Ferguson's grave, along with that of another who never made it off the mountains. It was our tribute to the Overmountain Men, who saw the need and left their homes for the uncertain future waiting in the form of Tory militias. We owe them such gratitude for the role they played in achieving our country's independence.

At 100 acres, it is large and it is definitely diverse. There are three lighted softball fields and one little league field. They have four covered shelters (two large, two smaller), there are a bunch of equestrian facilities (don't ask me how any of that works) with a show ring and 124 horse stalls. Playground, restrooms, amphitheater, three stocked lacks, a walking track, jogging trails and six lighted tennis courts. There was some sort of baseball competition going on when I stopped by today. One of the fields was in use by a girls softball team and there was a pretty big crowd. To access that area, there was a $5 parking charge but the rest of the park is free. Neat space! Brand new awesome park!…read more Hanna Park is an 85 acre multi-use park. The land was donated to the city who hired a professional park development contractor. They really did a fantastic job. Features: 5 Soccer Fields + 1 Youth Practice Field 6 Picnic Shelters (can be rented) + Picnic Pavilion Playgrounds for different age groups with umbrellas Nature Trails/Running Trails Restrooms and Concessions Once all the COVID craziness dies down I'm sure this place will be packed. Very happy to see such a worth while project come to fruition! Very clean and well laid out!
