OLF was the right home for me and my horse Blu. He loved his big open stall and paddock and his turn out in lush pastures. The Farm has a really nice riding track, outdoor arena and round pen and is literally right across the street from Bridle trails state park--so easy to attend shows or clinics! While there is no covered arena for rainy winter days, I can say with all honesty that I never missed a day of planned riding due to rain. The park has tall trees which protect from the rain but still are wide open and bright. Dana and her crew take amazing care of all the horses. They have a huge herd that has 30+ acres to meander in and are fed on a track to make sure everyone has a place to eat and not be bothered. Having said that, horses will be horses and do hurt themselves from time to time. Dana keeps sufficient stall/paddocks available to use if a horse needs to come out of the herd for any reason. A young horse had torn the skin back on her knee requiring stitches. She broke her stitches open and Dana made extraordinary efforts to help with the care and treatment of the horse including installing a tether system in a stall. In the 3 barns I have been at, I have never seen an owner so personally involved and conscientious of a horses' well being. For the non-herd horses, turn out is all day for long hours not just a couple hours. Any reasonable request was met and accommodated. This is not a "show" barn although there are show horses there. Boarders are knowledgeable and friendly and happy to join on a trail ride. There are a number of quality trainers available and with 50+ horses on the farm, all the vets and farriers go there. Dana even built a new covered, flat area for vets and/or farriers to work out of the elements. No this is not the fanciest place but it was honest, warm, caring and welcoming and not only felt like, but was Home for Blu and I. While we are loving and adjusting to our home in the sun, we will forever miss and be fond of our friends and time at Overlake. 100% recommend Overlake as a great place to board.

When my daughter and I come for lessons often Craig Stevens or Mary Anne Campbell will be working with students from other countries who've come all the way here to work with them. Even though they are riding at very high levels, my daughter and I never feel lower in anyone's eyes because we're beginners. As a teacher, Mary Anne is encouraging and supportive, demanding without ever demeaning. Craig is just brilliant, and what he knows about horses can keep you really truly progressing for decades- many of his students have been working with him for twenty years or more, and they ride beautifully and they still keep learning! I find that exciting. As a boarding and training facility, my horse is progressing calmly and more fun to ride each visit, and he's healthy and well cared for. Mary Anne is always ready if I have questions and offers suggestions if she sees something that might help him, and my daughter and I love the facilities and the community. Very happy at NSAE.

There is an ever-present tone of calm and respect at the barn for horses and students alike. Grass hay, twice a day, is provided with board. You may provide your own grain/supplements if you wish. Each horse has an open front stall, leading to a gravel paddock. During the day (after breakfast) the gates are open to fields. The horses are out until around dusk then back into paddocks for the night. Paddocks and stalls are cleaned daily. This is a family run business, with a number of people who have been here 10+ years. It's just a great community, and the property owners are so kind. There's a huge sand arena and nice big round pen, a locked tack room and just a really nice setup. For non horse folks: this isn't a horse rental or horse training business, and it isn't a drop in place to pet/visit horses. Just sharing as some people don't understand that many private boarding facilities don't offer those services. It does have a fenced Sniff Spot for dog owners who want to utilize that- reserve that on the Sniff Spot app.

First off, the location is amazing. It is less than a 10-minute drive from my work in downtown Redmond. I need to emphasize what a benefit this is because most of the horse places are far off in Woodinville or even farther in Monroe. And if you want something close in Kirkland, be prepared to pay more for keeping your horse there than your own mortgage. Every horse gets turned out in a pasture to graze every day and are stalled at night. There are a couple of stalling options including a 16x32 stall and run outdoors for $700 (really good value). The other option is an indoor stable with daily shavings for $800. Boarders also get really generous lockers for storing tack. There are two arenas, one indoor and outdoor. I never rode in the indoor arena for a couple of reasons. The arena is very small and narrow. With a large horse, you have to make a lot of tight turns. Additionally, the wall is made of hard cement material, versus a wood, so if a horse kicked the wall for any reason, this could make for a very bad injury. The outdoor arena is great, but the only problem is that it's outdoors... and we are in Washington. I've enjoyed the outdoor arena in the warmer months, but it's a shame when it rains. There are two round pens for turning your horse out or even riding. One of the best parts about this facility is that there is a trail that goes around the property that's about a mile long. The community itself is incredible. Everyone is really friendly, and you don't get the common barn drama that you will find in many locations. All of the staff members are also knowledgeable and work well with the animals. I'd definitely recommend checking out Willowcrest if you are looking for a place to board your horse. However, I will caution you about the arena situation, given that it rains a lot and then indoor arena isn't great.
