Beautiful view! I found this driving down E. Historic Columbia River Hwy. it was originally a comfort station and observatory for travelers. It's now a museum and memorial to Oregon pioneers. This historical landmark offers panoramic views of the Columbia River Gorge. I didn't get to go inside but the view is gorgeous.

Vista house was closed inside when we got here but the view was nice. It is still a good spot to take photos of the nature around the area. Plenty of parking, but no bathroom. Decent place to stretch out your legs but not much to do except for a few pictures and then drive off to the next destination.

The Vista House is considered a "Top 10" Portland tourist attraction. It's definitely a place I usually take family or friends who have never been to Portland. When I thinks of ideas on "where to take folks for grand views" I usually think of "Vista House." Anyways, about Vista House itself and what to expect. I've been here on light days where not many cars were around, to busy 'the parking lot is full' holiday weekends. So parking can be tricky depending on when you decide to visit. You can come here for a quick pic and continue down the road to head to all the falls. Or you can park for awhile, inhale the fresh air, admire the the majestic views of the Columbia River Gorge, and stop inside the Vista House to discover the historical reasons as to why this was built in the first place for everyone to enjoy. Inside is the rotunda, black'n'white photos around every corner, knowledgeable volunteers gladly presenting its history, marble walls, a coffee shop, a little gift shop, and restrooms. It's basically a mini-museum that's free. Hope this helps!

Loved this experience! Amazing lookout location. Does get busy. Came here on a Monday afternoon, and it was packed. Could still find parking. Accessible options to see a very beautiful landscape. Gift shop downstairs with a little museum. (We felt the gifts here were way better with a lot more local items than at the falls lodge.) Can't stop talking about how breathtaking this is.

Pictures don't do this place justice! It sits high so that you can see the landscape of the columbia gorge. It's beautiful, a must see heading east to Hood River. Just get here early because parking is very limited.

If you're in the Gorge, swing by Vista House at Crown Point on the historic Columbus River highway for some spectacular views. There's plenty of free parking. Sadly, the unique building itself was closed when we were there in May 2025, but that didn't stop us from enjoying the beautiful scenery. It's a fantastic spot for photos. Visit Vista House!

Vista House At Crown Point, Columbia River Hwy, Oregon. Sept, 2024. Built in 1917, Vista House is one of the most beautiful scenic points on the Historic Columbus Highway. Situated on three acres and 733 feet above the Columbia River, Vista House was built as a rest stop observatory and as a memorial honoring Oregon's pioneers. Listed in the National Register of Historical Places in 1974, it is an example of German "Art Nouveau" architecture. In Sept., 2024, Vista House is currently open Friday-Monday, 9 am-5 pm, weather and staffing permitting. They close if winds go above 50 MPH. Their website (vistahouse.com) has a Weather Watch. In addition to some historical displays, Vista House has (1) a Gift Shop with items which are interpretive of the Vista House, the Columbia River Gorge, the State of Oregon, and the Pacific Northwest, and (2) an Espresso Shop with drinks and sweet treats. Note that you can still view the beautiful Columbia River Gorge from the parking lot, even when Vista House is closed. Come early in the summer or weekends as parking is limited.

My wife and I visited the Vista House while we were on vacation and I do have to say that the view is overwhelming! We took our Monocular and tripod and the views were amazing. The Vista House wasn't open to the public the day we stopped but looking through the glass I would definitely like to go in and look around. This is a beautiful place for some pictures as well.

Vista house is still remodeling and cannot go inside yet. Will save it for next time!

Wow!! I'm not sure I have words for this b auto fully picturesque spot. A view of the Columbia River from every vantage point. The house itself is phenomenal. Plenty of parking and a easy, paved walk, for those who need/want it. The house itself is only open to the public Friday - Monday. Most definitely worth the stop.

This is an awesome place to make a quick stop. Parking spaces are limited so I came very early when there were nobody around. It had the breathtaking views of the Columbia River. It was so beautiful. It was too early, so the Vista House wasn't opened when I was there.

Also known as The Women's Forum for the women who raised finds to purchase than donate the land to Oregon Park & Recreation Department, I wrote a similar view under that heading. The drive along Scenic Highway 30 to get there is just as gorgeous! It's absolutely worth an intentional stop here, then continue on to the Vista House to take in more of this gorgeous scenery As you visit the waterfalls, hiking trails, Hood River, and all that the Columbia River Gorge has to offer. There is a huge parking lot and while most people drive to the end where it's closer to the River, the best views are as soon as you enter. So park immediately to the right and take it all in. Then walk down to the end of the parking lot for additional vistas. There are informational placards that provide the history of this magical spot, including the history of the women who raised money to purchase this piece of land and then gifted it to the Oregon Park and Recreation Department. This is why this area is also named The Women's Forum With the name of the women memorialized on a placard. There are coin operated telescopes (coins required, cost 50 cents) at the end nearer to the river so you can get an up close view of the landscape, birds and wildlife. There are a few benches to relax and breathe in the beauty of this incredible area. Chanticleer Point is a place I visit often on my way through the Gorge. On a blue sky day, a day filled with clouds or even fog, a spectacular view is there to enjoy! It sometimes gets windy so be prepared; this is the Gorge!. When friends come to Portland for a visit, Chanticleer Point is always on the agenda. They are awe struck by the incredible beauty of this gorgeous vantage point. Plus it's the epic spot for a photo!

The Bridge of the Gods... now that's a name that carries some weight…read more And it should because long before this steel beauty ever stretched across the Columbia River Gorge, there was something else here. A real, honest-to-God land bridge. A massive landslide hundreds of years ago choked the river and let people cross on foot until the river fought back and tore it apart. The Native legends say the gods themselves had a hand in building it... and destroying it. Fast forward, and now you've got this 1926 cantilever bridge about 1,800 feet of steel hanging out over the Columbia, standing roughly 140 feet above the water like it's got something to prove. Now here's where it gets personal. Years back little younger, little dumber, definitely more ambitious I ran a marathon. And by "ran," I mean I survived it with forward motion and questionable decision-making. But the moment I remember? Crossing this bridge. No crazy wind that day. Just... calm. Which is rare out there. You're up high enough to feel it, but not fighting it. Just steady. You look out, and it's cliffs, rock, river, and sky all layered together like somebody took their time building the view. And that's the thing about this bridge it sneaks up on you. From a distance, it's all structure. Steel, angles, purpose. But when you're on it? It's exposure. You feel the height. You feel the space. You realize real quick this isn't just a crossing it's a moment suspended out over something much bigger than you. There's history under your feet. Legends in the rocks. And yeah... maybe a little bit of your own story tied into it too. It's not flashy. It's not trying to be

SO MANY PICNIC TABLES!! Are you looking for a free, legal spot to have a picnic in the Columbia…read moreRiver Gorge? This is it! Where it is: Here! Where it's not: Campgrounds and other reserved areas with signs that say "No Picnicking" This seems like it would be an ideal place to have a family picnic with small children. If I had lived here when my daughter was little, this probably would have been a favorite spot for us. I'm not sure how busy it gets on the weekend, but I stopped by in the middle of the week during lunch time, and there were zero people utilizing the massive amounts of picnic space. The views of the river can't get much better than this, since the dam is in the middle of the river. The air is super fresh and breezy, and there are plenty of grounds to walk around and sights to see before/after you eat. The visitor center is honestly one of the neatest visitor centers I've ever visited. My only complaint would be that my daughter wasn't with me, because these kinds of things are always more fun to do with your kids. The first time I tried to come here, I actually turned around when a security guard approached my car, because I thought I must be in the wrong place. (This is actually what happened to the person who recently wrote a 3 star review-- it's apparent that he only visited the fish viewing ponds at the hatchery, and didn't make it out to the visitor center. The reason he's complaining about the dam being small is because he actually missed about 90% of it.) In order to get to the visitor center, you do need to pass through the security checkpoint with the armed officer. It turns out they just need to glance through your car to make sure you aren't hiding any guns or explosives. After the security check, the road passes through the active working environment of the dam. As one drives slowly over the metal bridges, they observe all kinds of scientists, engineers, rangers, and maintenance staff hard at work. The road passes two fishing day use areas. Even though I wasn't fishing, I found that it was worth driving down there just to get a closer view of the dam. I've visited plenty of dams and waterfalls, but the water at the bottom of these spillways is probably the fastest-moving water I've ever seen in my life. I was momentarily mesmerized by the white rapids. The interior of the visitor center was just as impressive as the grounds. My favorite part was the fish ladder viewing windows on the first floor, which most people access by taking an elevator from the main floor. I personally used the five-story concrete staircase to get around, and would recommend it to anyone who is able to use it. There is a lovely fish mural painted around the base of the stairs all the way from the top to the bottom. While I've seen a fish ladder before (at Nimbus Fish Hatchery near Folsom), this was a completely different experience. The viewing windows for this fish ladder are underground, which provides an underwater view. It was neat to see the fish struggling against the powerful water currents. Every once in a while, one would suddenly get blown backwards past the ones struggling forwards. On the main floor, I enjoyed the historic army posters, the views of the Gorge, and the bookstore. I ended up purchasing a few Columbia River Gorge themed stickers, since they had some of the cutest stickers I've seen anywhere. The dam also offers a Junior Ranger program, and I'm not sure about weekend staffing, but I saw several Park Rangers during my tour. I honestly thought this experience was just as cool as some aquariums I've been to that charge $40 or more. But it was completely free. Highly recommended for everyone, but especially if you have kids with you, or if you're looking for a place to have a free and legal picnic.

Worth visiting overall…read more The viewing area where you can watch fish migrate through the glass windows was a bit underwhelming. There wasn't much to see during my visit--mostly green, murky water with little visible fish activity. The grassy area near the giant turbine and picnic tables offered good views of the dam, but it was surprisingly full of dog poop. There was enough of it that you had to watch where you stepped and carefully navigate around it to get a good vantage point for photos. Counter staff were very friendly and welcoming and were more than willing to inform and answer questions.
