However, I think this guy has gotten too big for his britches because he isn't great and he doesn't work with you. I contacted him in August of 2021 for a kitchen remodel. We started work in October and finished only after the help of a mediator. The cabinets were nice but were a bait and switch. I asked him why he sent me to a website to pick from if those were not the same cabinets. He said, what did I expect; mine was "a budget remodel." I guess he only cares about his million-dollar jobs. He said he would purchase one brand of appliances, so what I got was a mashup of 3 different brands. He yelled at me and screamed that he'd never want to work with me again...when I rejected a plastic underlay for my vinyl plank floor that he picked up from Home Depot ...after I gave him the link with which to find the appropriate one for my flooring. After that, the work slowed to a crawl. I will not go into detail, but I am attaching pictures of the work he said was perfectly fine, even though he never came to inspect it. After remediation I got most of the issues fixed. The rest I had to take care of myself and paid extra for a painter. Even during the time I worked with the mediator, he was threatening to take me to collections while he didn't provide the work and warranty information that was required. After it was all over, he told the mediator that he was just "playing with me." Needless to say, I do not recommend nor will I ever work with him again.

My roof was in very bad shape and I had many roofers tell me or give me a choice of just putting on a new layer. John was the only one that said NO and told me that all the old stuff must be removed. I am glad that I listened to John. This house was built in the 1930s and the old roofing material was about 6-8 inches thick and so dried out that it was hard as rock. It must have weighed several tons, if not more. My roof is now over 4 years old and it still looks like the day it was put on. The material selection and workmanship is excellent after more than 4 years.

We worked with Jeff Struck on a new siding job for our home. After meeting with many companies, we…read morechose Jeff not because he was the cheapest, which he wasn't, he also wasn't the most expensive, but for the simple fact that he was down to earth. We felt an immediate connection with him. The project took longer than expected. Jeff felt the need to work 3hrs on one of the last warmer days, just days prior to Thanksgiving to play golf. Personally, I would have thought working longer on a warmer day would be something you would want to get the job done. However, we accepted this behavior as it really had no impact on us. Upon completion of the project, Jeff stated how he is always available, stands true to his work and if there were any issues he would come back. I guess that stands true until there is actually an issue. His clean up around the property was mediocre with a tremendous amount of visible nails on my patio. He damaged a new piece of trim when removing my front railing and said it would come out. However it's plastic and legit damaged. Not scuffed. The piece needs to be replaced. My husband noticed a gap between one of the sides of the house and the roof. The trim around our front bay window is all dented and does not look complete or new for that matter. All the white soffits and trim around garage doors and windows are literally black from the dirt from their hands when installing. All of which Jeff said upon completion they go and clean it all. We even had coffee drip marks from when they were on the scaffold all over the new trim above the garage doors. Clearly the cleaning process was skipped. Even with these concerns, the worst part about it all was Jeffs lack of communication and attitude when these concerns were addressed. Not once did he pick up the phone to call my husband or I, everything was communicated via text. At one point he mentioned that these were nothing concerns and he honestly feels his work at our home was done. He mentioned that he went above and beyond with something outside of what we hired him for, however at the time never brought it up or said there would be an additional charge, which if so we would have paid. He removed a wall air conditioner so that we can side over the hole. The exchange of texts actually got very nasty and disrespectful. Not something you would expect when his words stated that he stood by his work and any concerns just call him. The job was completed end of November 2021 and 3 months later, Jeff has continued to ghost us. Our last text was how he wanted to make good on his work and reputation and that he would contact us this past weekend. We gave him the benefit of the doubt and not a word, hence for this review. Overall the house looks good, minus the front bay window and front trim by the front door. So upsetting that it has to be in the front Of the house. This review was about the kind of person Jeff is, not necessarily about the work. Stuff happens, we are all human. Just own up to it, fix it and be done with it. This was a huge project for us and Jeffs attitude has taken away from us enjoying what we just spent thousands of dollars on. Personally, I would never hire someone like Jeff to work on anything for you.

After a botched temporary fix with a different roofer who overcharged us and a bunch of other roofing company quotes after that, we were lucky enough to finally come across Al Struck. To be honest, I had all but given up and was ready for the runaround, but something about Al was different. He called me and was so kind and really listened to me about my roof issue. He constantly followed up with me, explained every step of the process to me, and always showed up/called when he said he would. He also offered the fairest price out of all the quotes we've gotten. As a young couple in our first home, he could've easily taken advantage of us, but he didn't and you just know he's a good guy - as the owner of a company but also as a person. Al Struck scheduled us as soon as the weather was good enough to go, and his crew got to work right away. Al was on site to watch over everything and kept us updated throughout the process. Both Al and his crew were extremely professional and efficient and our roof came out amazing! Even the post cleanup was very detailed and we were so impressed and are extremely grateful. We ended up having a leak again, but it was due to an unrelated issue with the chimney rather than the roof - and yet when I called Al, he had someone come out right the next morning to help fix it for free. The guy was very considerate and looked at everything, then he called Charles back, who called me, and quoted me $6,500 to replace the entire 250 square foot roof. He kept saying it was 500 square feet, which it definitely is not (he had not seen it in person). I tried to talk through various options with him, but as soon as it became clear I likely wasn't going to spend $6,500 on the spot to replace the entire roof, he became disinterested and eventually hung up on me. I get Charles not wanting to waste time, but the numbers he was throwing at me seemed very large, especially for the situation. He wasn't wiling to talk through things at all unless I was going to commit to thousands of dollars on the spot. Also, after some less rushed research, $6,500 is a very high price for a 250 square foot flat roof. Charles seemed like a nice enough fellow - but I can't help feeling that I narrowly escaped being taken for a very expensive ride because i needed work done quickly - as anyone with a leaking roof likely can relate to!

Therefore, it's hard to give them more than a couple stars since the main value of having a roof is to prevent leaks, which this roof currently does not do. ORIGINAL: In short -- highly recommend. We called C. Johnston after suffering from sporadic leaks in our new apartment for the last 6 months. Charles, his sons, Santiago and the crew did a phenomenal job on a difficult project that involved laying down a new roof and replacing a skylight at our coop in SoHo. Much of the roof was underneath a large deck that had to be moved (and then reassembled) in order to replace the roof. The deck was put back together in great condition, and the new roof has withstood a few storms already with no leaks. The price was fair (Charles specifically made a point to not oversell a more expensive method when it wasn't needed) the communication was clear & frequent, and the team left my place in better condition then when they arrived. FWIW they're also the only roofers we've had that haven't tracked tar anywhere in my apartment. If you're considering a new roof in NYC, you'd be dumb not to call C. Johnston.
