I don't want to give myself a bad name, but I love naughty afternoon pints, and for that the Pavilion nails it. The dark wood and tiled floor give it a feel of The Crown but without the tourists and dodgy toilets. It is a bit of an old man's bar, but having been in with a group of girls who had no interest in watching the sport on the big screens, it went down a treat. There is also a pool hall upstairs, which although nowhere near as good or big as Laverys it is perfect for pottering away the afternoon. While it's neighbour The Errigle may be busier, the craic is superior in the Pav and you unlike the great selection of beers ,you can't get that on draught. ;-) read more

I've been to this venue twice, once for a quiet drink after a meal at the fab Frenchie restaurant E'toile across the road and again recently for a swingin hoedown of a night at Hellza Poppin. This night was top class and came recommended by the Guardians Guide- put that in yer pipe! Captains Topsy and Pixie play, in their own words '40's swing, 50's rock'n'roll, 60's girl groups, Motown, 80's alt pop and a load of shit/ brilliant stuff', well done girls on describing your own night, this is spot on! The music was amazering! Loads of sixties classics like 'These boots were made for Walkin' fitting snuggly between 'Walk like an Egyptian' and a bitta Dolly Parton 'Nine to Five'. There were also some amazingly crap tunes like Cotton Eye Joe, oh dear, but it was all in the name of good fun. Most people came dressed in cowgirl and cowboy outfiits, including one guy who went a bit far and wore a pair of leather chaps, cowboy boots with a pair of boxers underneath and a waistcoat. It ensured there was a 5 mile radius around this dude on the dancefloor for the entire night, but hey, he was enjoying himself. The downstairs bar is nice and elegant, but the TV's showing sport were really intrusive whilst trying to have a nice drink. Upstairs the atmosphere was a lot more relaxed. I've been here a couple of times for the comedy nights that are put on upstairs and always had a good enough night in the pub, despite the lack of comedic talent on show. The building itself is lovely and a nice space to be in, with plenty of space and facilities provided for smokers as well as normal punters. There is always a good atmosphere for a normal night out or an even better atmosphere if there is live music on or they're showing the football. I'm a big fan of the selection of speciality beers and ales they have on which is always nice for a change. The prices are ok, pretty much standard which I doubt too many people would complain about. My only issue with The Pavillion is its location, it is pretty far up the Ormeau road so doesn't really work on a pub crawl or as a stop off if you are not from that end of Belfast. That being said, the public transport routes around are all easy accesible and regular so its not that hard to get to. read more

I've only been in this bar twice and both times it was a treat. The reason for the infrequent visits is that the bar is quite far out of the center of town. To be honest, now that i'm getting older I can see myself hanging out here more often as it's not full of creeps and sl@gs as other city center bars. Both times I have been in this bar i have only been downstairs though I am aware that there is a thriving upstairs pool hall and gig-a-torium on the second floor. I've been in during Autumn time when its been cold outside and we have stumbled in on the way back from a rugby match at Raven Hill. Both times I recall excellent food, a great, dark and cosy atmosphere with plenty of criac from fellow patrons and staff. I seem to recall an open fire? I'm heading here again in a few weeks for a post match pint so if things have changed any I will let you know. read more

It was only recently that I actually ventured into this establishment for a drink and for a gig. The building has several floors, the ground floor being the main bar and a music venue upstairs and it is run by the same people who run Lavery's in town. I would think mainly local bands would play there and not that many big names. I also noticed a couple of pool tables, so its definitely a spot to go with friends and have a good time. I went to school right beside this bar and I remember walking out on fridays to get the bus home and it would already be buzzing with people beginning their weekend. Not much has changed the locals love it and inhabit it every weekend, its a bit out of the way if you don't live local. Its had recent renovations which definitely heighten its appeal. Another Belfast institution. A bit out of the way for pub crawls but happily I live nearby so usually just place myself in a dark corner and stay all night. It's good for a visit in the daytime too and serves food seven days a week from 12-9pm. The downstairs bar is pretty pedestrian and nothing particularly special unless you're into watching your sports, but the middle bar hosts gigs and comedy and is a small, intimate little venue that always lends itself well to whatever's on. Staff are friendly and service is always pretty fast. And then you go to the top floor...this is one of Belfast's best pub pool rooms - small, but with a packed jukebox and a good vibe. It's a bit too bright though, and we all know that dimly lit spots are far better for the beer goggles, as well as ensuring that the whole bar can't leer up your skirt when you lean over for that elusive shot into the top right pocket. Drinks in all three bars are decently priced, with a wide range from all around the world, and there's usually something on special so you can guzzle that little bit more. Even better, the downstairs bar does carryouts, at bar prices, so when it's last orders and time to limp sadly home, you can do so with plenty of extras to extend the night with. read more

I firmly believe that if this place was located closer to the city centre it would be one of the most popular places in Belfast, but t its location on the Ormeau road means you are likely to plan to head here rather than just stumble on in on a night out. The bar is set over three floors, with the ground floor the main bar area. Because of the location and the fact it isn't as packed as many Belfast bars are, the atmosphere is a lot more relaxed and laid back, which is a good thing! The décor is traditional, with friendly staff who enjoy a bit of banter and also are generous with their drinks measures! The main reason I have been here in the past is because of the middle floor which is where my friend's bands have played and it's an excellent place for gigs. The sound is spot on, with the sound engineer really helpful and knowledgeable, so bands can focus on giving their all rather than if their vocals are tinny or if the speakers aren't working right! The top floor is pool city, and gives you the same experience that you would get in Lavery's but in a far more relaxed and less cramped environment, so the chances of knocking into nearby people constantly are far less here!If you want a nice relaxed pint and chat with your friends, the pavilion is as good a place in Belfast to do that away from the meat markets like the Bot! Headed here one night when we where up this side of town for a few drinks. First impressions are that it is a bit of an "old mans bar". But talking to the staff, checking out the menu and taking a look around I could see that u was half wrong. This is a great mixture of the local drinking den of old and the student bars of recent years. There was a few locals in and quite a few groups of younger peoples heading out for a night. We tried the food and after talking to the helpful staff we choose burgers all around. One word, Delicious. Cheap beer, great food and what seems to be something on every night of the week. The Pavillion is three stories of Craic. The top floor features a couple of pool tables and bar, the middle floor features a performance stage and a bar, and the bottom floor features a - that's right, you guessed it - bar. The drinks are pretty reasonably priced and they always feature some kind of drink special to make it a little easier on your pocketbook. The last time I visited, they had a South African bottled beer and a drink special, both for well under £3. Every fortnight the middle bar features some of the best comedy in Belfast. and an open mike talent show. Now, apparently one of the other reviewers didn't like the comedy on that particular night. But that, unfortunately, is the nature of open mike comedy - anyone can go up. So if you're there for the comedy, just keep that in mind. They also feature a number of beers and bottles that you can get take away. At the end of the night they're kind enough to give you a plastic glass so you can carry your alcohol away with you. read more

The Pavillion is a lovely friendly bar that doesn't deserve it's reputation for being a bit rough as I honestly don't think there's anywhere more welcoming. Was there this evening at a gig and due to problems with microphones, it was an hour and a half late starting. Even then the issues weren't ironed out as the lead singer's mic kept on cutting out mid song. I would take this as a once off and think no more about it but it's happened before, which is such a shame because there are lots of great things on in this bar and this is a tiny niggle that you'd think would be easy to sort. Pool tables on the top floor are a good time waster while they're waiting to sort out their electronics though. If you're a student, you're welcome to the best deal ever, which consists of a burger, a pint, and a game of pool for £3.95 - amazing value! read more

Went into here today with my friend we got a burger each and a pint, got a burger which was supposed to be spicy chump burger with garlic sautéed potatoes, the burger patty itself was thick and full of meat and had a nice chump steak flavour, quite moist , although I didn't get the 'spicy' part of the burger , which was stated , had a nice floury bap and the burger was topped off with sweet onions which was lovely and smoked cheese, I didn't taste the cheese much but all in all it was a nice burger, the garlic sautéed potatoes were nice although I had to get to the bottom of the bowl to get to the garlic butter, I think the potatoes could have been more flavoured but they were nice though. I have been to the Pavilion for lunch quite a few times before matches at Ravenhill. The bar downstairs can be busy but we have always booked a table with ease. I have tried the club sandwich which is absolutely delicious. It is served with homemade coleslaw and the entire meal was beautiful. There was nothing to fault. I had this quite a few times after but I think it was taken off the menu at one point. The beef burgers are beautiful too, really meaty and homemade. The chicken burgers aren't for me, the breading on them seems to be quite greasy/well done and that's not a one-off. The carbonara is amazing!!! The staff could not be more friendly or helpful and the selection of drink available is brilliant. My friend likes to try different types of ale and has never been disappointed with what they have to offer. read more

We always pop in here before going across the road to Gaze for a bite to eat, and it has a lovely feel, this bar. It's a real mixed crowd, very sociable and relaxed, and the bar itself is very comfortable. We get so settled in here sometimes that we don't want to leave. It's a beautiful red bricked Victorian building with some 'old world' charm, and they really plan for their clientele here, and in particular look after the smokers since the ban, as they've set up an outside terrace area and an area out front with plasma screens and covered seating so that the smokers don't miss any of the football action or music when they are outside - sometimes there is more craic outside than there is inside! There is never too long to wait at the bar, and you also have the choice of two bars, downstairs and upstairs, where they sometimes have live music or comedy acts performing. The food is spectacular and was presented in a way I was not expecting for a regular bar food. Spread over three floors and with an amazing terrace to enjoy the sun (yes we do get some...now and then) it caters for everyone! The top floor boasts loads of pool tables and is really popular with students and people just wanting to unwind with afew pints and a bit of banter. The middle floor is where the live gigs take place and it's a surprisingly great location for gigs! The main bar is really traditional and also has the usual wide screen TV's for a bit of footie on a Saturday afternoon. Decent bar with pool tables and a nice crowd. It's sort of the local but doesn't have that feel. It's obvious it's laverys sister bar as it has the same feel but on a lesser scale. Like the normal Mars bar, to the smaller version you get in multi packs. What's particularly cool about it is that it doesn't just attract the usual student '3 drinks for £5' crowd; its' punters tend to be quite cultured, educated people. A bar that has long passed me buy, primarily due to it being quite far up the Ormeau Road and not one of the places I'd usually socialise with friends. I did go here a few months ago though to see a friend's band and all was merry... Downstairs it's a fairly normal pub. Drawing a mixture of local regulars, passers buy and the inevitable student soiree (bars in south Belfast would go bust if student housing wasn't as prominent in the area) It's a comfortable place to be. Dark and woody, akin to Lavery's which are of course it's owners it also samples a bit decor wise from nearby Errigle Inn. A nice place for a quick pint or an all night session. The last time and only time I was here it ended up being a late one. When I lived in a damp, dilapidated house on the Ormeau Road this place was the only place that kept me sane. While the downstairs bar is nice for a quiet pint the two bars above are were most of my time is spent with the middle bar being great for all sorts of events from Punk to Drum and Bass gigs along with quizzes, charity events and comedy nights. The 3rd floor pool hall has a great value Burger, Side & free game of Pool deal for only £5 along with any sports that maybe on the box.
