Love the trash cans on the outside of the enclosures (they need tweaking to reach better, but love it - keeps parks employees safe from dogs who don't like it when people come in without a dog). I added this to Yelp, and put on photos that I would want to see. Bob the Schipperke approves! Onward on our trip east, then back home to Santa Cruz. (I'm from Ames originally.)

One area is enclosed for little dogs and another enclosed area for big dogs...and last but not least.... there's an enclosed training park for big/med sized dogs. The training park has a bunch of doggy obstacles for your furry friend to train on. If your dog needs a drink, there's also a nice watering station there too.

We Paid for the permit, read all the rules, waited patiently in the car for the training section, did everything by the book. My dogs not aggressive at all, they was excited to go and meet other dogs (I have two standard poodles a 3 year old and 1 year old). Then this old dude pulled up with his husky and mutt, he saw us getting out the car, my dogs was on leashed when he decided to let his aggressive dog out of the car off leashed and attack mine, drew blood! Caused a gash on her back. Incompetent, ignorant, irresponsible, illiterate human being caused pain to my dog! We will be back and I hope and pray I see him again so I can sue him for the damages he caused. I hope the city put that aggressive dog down before that dog cause serious injury! My dog now in shock and in pain. Sometimes it's not you, but other irresponsible people! Now we got a problem.

It's a HUGE fenced in space, divided into three sections - training, small dogs, and general. Plenty of space to play together or branch off by yourself. There is a gravel path that goes around the entire play area where human parents usually just walk laps to keep up with their fur babies. I've noticed about as much forgotten/missed poops as I have at other parks, but the backdrop of this one is so soothing. It's tucked back in Squaw Creek Park by the driving range, surrounded by wild grass and a community garden plot. The park is maintained by CR Parks and K9COLA, which hosts small events at the parks every so often (Halloween treat hunts?!)

Like it's sister park, K9 Acres in Marion, the park is divided into sections for training, small dogs, and general play. We prefer Cheyenne for the winding paths through the trees. It's a little more secluded and peaceful, even if the rugby players are out. Our dogs love chasing each other through the wooded areas around the path and the shade the trees provide on hotter days. It seems to engage them a little better and tucker them out quicker ;) There's plenty of water around the trails and an occasional sled serving as a pool. They have some play equipment - seesaw, tunnel, bridge, hoops - in the general area.

This regularly-tended dog park offers a place for Ames residents to let their dogs run and play…read moreoff-leash. There is a 2-acre fenced area for small dogs and an 8-acre fenced area for large dogs, so if you have a puppy or a small breed, you don't have to worry about your little guy getting trampled or roughed up by rambunctious big dogs (and if you have a big dog, you don't have to follow her around and constantly stop her from pinning that beagle/shih tzu/etc). There are multiple water fountains (near the entrance, further out into the large dog area) and always a fresh supply of mutt mitts. There are disposal units for full mutt mitts at various spots in the park, though the ones further from the entrance tend to fill up pretty quickly. There is a paved loop in the larger section for walking around the park while your dog plays, with multiple benches along the route. If you don't bring a toy with you, you'll probably be able to find old tennis balls or a frisbee lying around. This place has a friendly community vibe, complete with regulars (both dog and human), like the man and his developmentally-disabled son who come out on hot afternoons with big buckets that they fill with fresh water for the dogs. We've met lots of nice dog-people during our time at this park, though to be honest we usually know their dogs' names long before we learn the humans' names!

The trees provide good shade in the summer. And I love that there's even an option on this side of town. But this park is too small. They have a little bit of equipment in each yard plus a bench or two and a trail looping through the trees in the main yard. I never see water out there, but the waste bags are usually stocked. Be aware that you park at the Boyson Rd Cedar Trail trailhead and have to cross the bike path to get back to the dog park. This could be stressful for some dogs when traffic is higher in the summer. It's truly just not enjoyable for me or my dog if there's more than one or two other people in the main yard. More often than not, humans and dogs end up clustering and clogging right by the entrance. This tends to result in doggie shenanigans and not enough actual running and playing. I've noticed that the humans tend to be less attentive or responsive to their dogs too, making it extra unpleasant. (Akin to letting your human toddler punch and scream at other children in the park so you can be on your phone and blowing off their parents when they tell you to watch your kid.) With more spacious options to choose from, I don't bother with this park. Unless it's an off time of day, the crowds that come here are just not worth it.
