There are ridges and ravines, valleys and peaks. It looked to be excellent for hiking. The campgrounds are nice and spacious and there are many, many campsites. I really enjoyed my stay here and could see coming back to Backbone to explore it more. I believe it is Iowa's first state park and there are many things to check out, including a seasonal CCC museum.

Prairie Rose is just seven miles north off I-80 at the Antique City Dr./Walnut exit; a convenient stop if you're looking to shed the stress of interstate travel for an hour or two. Entrance into the park is free. Don't be deceived by the park's office; it is in an old house very close to the entrance of the park. There, the park attendant explained the walking trails in the area and offered a map. I would most certainly consider visiting for a weekend, as Prairie Rose offers just enough to do/explore in order to fill two days (especially for those with kids). Camping spots are plentiful, and there are a few cabins on the premises. There are a handful of trails for walking (come with walking shoes), a beach on the NW side of the lake, a playground or two, and picnic benches throughout for those homemade meals. If you're looking for a quick getaway, I'd say it's worth the 50-mile drive from Omaha or Council Bluffs.

This place is AWESOME! We made a reservation online - was so easy - for 3 adults and 4 pre-teens…read more We picked "TH3 C0D3" room, which was a challenging room - 7.3/10 difficulty rating. It lived up to its rating...it was tough! We had such a blast though!! It was fun to see how we all worked together... some got stressed, some really excelled, some freaked out! It was great! We didn't escape the room - we ran out of time. But, our Game Master, Kyle, was the best. He would give us hints along the way and that helped. We had SUCH a great time that when we were about to leave the kids REALLY wanted to do another round. It is so addicting!! We couldn't agree more! So we stayed and did the "ARIZONA SHOOTOUT" room. It was about the same difficulty rating as the other room... it was at 7.2/10. However, we actually thought this one was easier! Maybe it was because we had learned to work together as a team in the first room? Not sure - but with the help of our Game Master Kyle and working together on strategies as a team - WE ESCAPED just in the nick of time! We got out with only 20 seconds to spare!! It was so exciting! I can't say enough good things about Escapology Cedar Falls. Kyle, our Game Master...and Megan at the Front Desk... were both SO amazing, friendly, and kind. The facility was just beautiful AND 100% power wheelchair accessible. That was a huge plus. Very impressive and much appreciated!! I highly recommend Escapology Cedar Falls to anybody who is looking to have a great time with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, anyone!! Thanks for a great afternoon! See you again soon!!

Our tour guide Erick was great- knowledgeable and very engaging as was the other gentleman at the welcome center. Although we traveled by car, we loved that we saw a few guests actually arrived by kayak as the home's boathouse is right on the river- they did mention they called the park to prearrange their tour so as to meet the guide at the house. As avid kayakers we'll be doing this for a return visit. FYI kayakers/canoers- there's a sizeable sand bar forming a nice natural beach right across the river from the Cedar Rock boathouse that's perfect for a lunch stop/picnic.
