I've been to Pawlus Dental several times and I cannot say enough about the quality all around. Even though I now live in California, I've tried to go to Pawlus when I'm in Hoosierland. My wife is so impressed with his work that she keeps talking about flying out there *just for the dental work*--and not even for the great architecture in Columbus (been there, done that). We trust Pawlus for the biggest jobs like veneers and implants. I had a chipped front tooth and Pawlus made it look absolutely the same as my other teeth, you cannot even tell it's not the original. What to expect when you visit Pawlus Dental here in Columbus Indiana. Let's start with the very unfriendly staff in the billing area. Do not expect that questioning your bill or asking for explanation of charges, your charges, the ones that you are paying for, to simply be answered. Do expect rude and how dare you question what is printed there, attitude. Do expect to be lied to, intimidated or both if you dare to question why a charge or procedure was not fully explained to you. The only good experience I had in the billing area was when the billing ladies were out to lunch and one of the front desk receptionists offered to come and help me. This individual took the time to print out, do the math and explain to me, what I was not understanding. When you are in the chair, do not expect that you can choose to say no and to choose what you would like to do with your insurance plan, your teeth and your money. What you can expect is passive aggressive behavior, and belittling, and if that does not sway you to conform then back up is called in from the billing department. And the main one in billing is a beast, I'm sure many have run and hid knowing she was on her way. What you can expect is to be told, when you do not want more x-rays just because insurance will pay after 2 years even though there are no signs of cavities or any new development, to be told by the hygienist, that "you get more radiation just walking outside", (her arms crossed and doing her best to tower over you and intimidate you). I mean if you are getting radiated every time you walk outside then you might want to skip more radiation in places that you can control...like not getting x-rays just because 2 years have lapsed and x-rays can be billed again. Expect folded arms, eye rolling, belittling posturing and extra's being brought in to bully you into submission. All I wanted was my teeth cleaned, a plain cleaning that my insurance paid 100% for. They were insisting that I had deep cleaning last time so I would have to do that moving forward because insurance would not pay after a deep clean, for regular cleaning. Had to question that one...I know that last year after requesting a regular cleaning when I scheduled, I wondered after the procedure, why I was still charged $200 +. I was not up for a battle with the awful billing lady after the cleaning and numbing so I just paid it. It turns out they did deep clean after I asked when I scheduled, for regular cleaning that my insurance would pay 100%. Trust me when I say they do not understand the words, "I cannot afford more than...". Each visit has been a challenge in one way or another; never to be treated as if I might be a responsible, intelligent human being that knows how to spend her own money and do the best she can within insurance limits to preserve her own teeth as best as income will allow for. I called my insurance company next day after this last visit just last week, and it turns out that I can go from deep clean to regular cleaning, which I felt was a lie on their part, as long as it had been 90 days from the deep clean. I had had enough last week, of the abuse experienced each visit so I got up and got my purse and walked out. On my way out, little miss billing had to get her last dig in, "just let us know where to send your records", again in that condescending tone of hers, so mature, so unnecessary, I was leaving, I didn't say anything to her, but she just cannot resist and not pass up an opportunity to be nasty. What to expect in this office if you have great insurance and plenty of money to cover expensive procedures...great service I am sure, which is fine for some, but it is not for me. read more

My loved one went to Pawlus to get a full set of implants. I went to the final consultation with my spouse. She was excited to get implants. During the consultation I felt The Advocate downplayed the pain involved, healing time, and how long the process would be before the completed set would be ready. My loved one has had nothing but pain from the ill-fitting temporary dentures. She returned for numerous adjustments but the dentures were bulky and rubbed her gums and tongue anyways. In my opinion, it has been a comedy of errors Pawlus would forget to make adjustments between appointments, so nothing could be done. Pawlus broke off a piece of her "new" implant and called to tell her not to come to her appointment to be fitted for her implants. They gave her a "soft" diet pair to wear until the part can be ordered and her permanent implants can be repaired. It is obvious to me that once they get your money, all upfront, the customer service is lackluster. The delays and excuses are ridiculous, unprofessional, and timely delivery of the end product drags out for months. When your loved one wants implants, and wants an aesthetically pleasing short term denture, this is not the place for you. Your loved one will be stuck with an ill fitting mouthpiece that everyone notices and will experience months of pain. Buyer beware. read more

Going to the dentist is not exactly my idea of a good time. Dr. Pawlus and his staff however make it as pleasant as possible. The office is beautiful. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The hygienists are extremely professional. Dr. Pawlus is caring but also efficient and I never feel like I'm waiting hours for him to come in. He's got loads of experience and is very honest and matter of fact about things which I prefer. When we first went to see him, he identified a very unique trait on my husband's teeth that indicated something about his ancestry...which was true! In all of his years of going to the dentist not a single other dentist mentioned this. We were impressed. My husband has had the occasional issue with phone communication about billing (I have not) and that's the reason for 4/5 stars. Highly recommend. read more

Waste of time and money. Great at cleaning. Beware of the up sales. I will try to keep this short. I have issues with teeth clinching at night. Pawlus prescribed a mouth guard. Guard makes matters worse. Pawlus says it is critical to continue wearing. Once sleep is now disrupted and you are now in constant pain he says you need to relax and take antidepressants. read more

The work Pawlus does seemed to be quality but the last time I went in they informed me that we owed nearly $600 but couldn't figure out why. We have always paid our copays up front. The receptionist said it looked like a mistake since the only appointment she could see from this billing period (which was nearly a year old) was for my wife's filling. They said they would look into it and let me know what was going on. We never heard back from them and now months later they send us a letter threatening collections! We haven't had a procedure done at all that would have cost this much out of pocket. Something very shady is going on with their billing, beware! read more

I will always check the front desk to confirm I have paid for all charges on my account. Weeks later, I will get a bill. This has happen on more than one occasion. Seems ridiculous to keep finding small things to charge your patients for...moving my whole family to a different dentistry. Came back again today. Had tooth problems and needed a root canal. Got it, no pain during the root canal. Dr. Pawlus and his Staff are great and they're straight up with you. Great decor as well, makes you feel relaxed and not like you're at dentist office. Giant koi fishes too! Love coming here. Prices are reasonable! You get what you pay for right? If I could give them zero stars I would. They wanted me to pay almost $700 upfront to get a deep root and gum cleaning done in house. A.) They should have referred me to a periodontist for that and B.) Never pay for any service like that up front. They told me that I had stage three gum disease. Being 29 with no history of cavities, tooth decay, gum bleeding, or unhealthy habits, I went to my actual dentist and got a second opinion. Turns out - I do not have any kind of gum disease and I do not need a periodontal clean. They also aggressively tried to talk me into getting Invisalign and wanted me to do a $250 sleep study. I filed a complaint with the BBB but they only deal with billing issues which, based on the reviews, a lot of people are having. Because I didn't actually pay them the money they wanted, the BBB referred me to the Indiana Attorney General's Office to file a complaint for the business to be investigated. DO NOT go here. If you do - please get a second opinion. I could be out over $1000 right now if I wouldn't have had a weird feeling about everything they were telling me. read more

Dr. Pawlus should be ashamed of himself and his business. This place is horrendously overpriced for inadequate service to say the least. I prepaid for services that I didn't get and was told that I would get a refund check in the mail at the end of that week. It has been 3 weeks now and no refund. I have called multiple times per day, but they are always too busy to connect me with the one woman who can tell me what's going on. I did get a lady to tell me there are fees that ended up on my account after the fact. I cannot believe this place is still in business. They are disorganized and the waiting room is dirty on top of it all. Now, my flex account money is tied up and I cannot get the dental work that I still need completed until this business decided to release the funds. Next stop.... BBB. I've been going to Dr. Pawlus for 16 years. I no longer live in Columbus but it's well worth the 1 hour drive to continue coming here. The staff is incredibly patient, attentive, thorough, professional and fast. Dr. Pawlus is an excellent dentist - he takes the time to explain procedures in detail and instantly puts you at ease. He makes what is normally a very uncomfortable experience something to look forward to. The office environment is clean, modern, and soothing. The koi pond with waterfall makes for a nice comforting sound and the TVs on the walls and ceilings in the patient rooms makes the time fly. I highly recommend Dr. Pawlus - he's the best! read more

I had NO PROBLEM before I had this procedure. I was told that I needed a crown since my cavity was deep. I asked if a filling would I had a deep cavity fill but I was told that they could try..and THEY DID.. After having tooth sensitivity and bleeding for 4 months, I saw an endodontist and I need a root canal to fix the sensitivity problem. read more

This is from a few years ago when I had the misfortune of being referred to this dentist by a local in Columbus. Dr. Pawlus was insistent on doing aggressive and unnecessary work which at the time, I was too clueless and ignorant to bother seeking out a second opinion. My entire family received unnecessary and expensive work which led to a myriad of other problems. He also took advantage of foreigners in town by insisting on extremely expensive and invasive dental work. I received shoddy onlays which have only been causing problems, pain, and costing more money since they were put on. He once started drilling and left to go have lunch for about 45 minutes to an hour while I sat in the chair with my mouth gaping open with a dental dam. Staff was nice enough and the office seemed clean but overall sh*tty work and not the most honest. Dentists since then have commented on the quality of work (not in a favorable way) and how it was probably unnecessary. I would try elsewhere if at all possible. Dr. Pawlus and the dental hygengist are spot on but the business practices employeed are questionable. I recieved a bill from a collections agency prior to remaining balances clearing from insurance? I had another instance that I was given the opportunity to pay a discounted amount in cash that would settle a balance prior to being submitted to the insurance, this amount wasn't even close to my debuctible. Billing and insurance issues were not worked out according to what was originally communicated and we were not informed until after surgery. The prices are already much higher than others in the area and information was not properly investigated and communicated prior to the procedure. read more
