I adopted little Rosie, a 7 year old Shih Tzu mix and she is perfect. The week before I had to euthanize my little girl Ruby who had stomach cancer ( just diagnosed the month before and she was almost 9 and only had her about 3 years). Wasn't going to get another dog so quickly but felt Ruby was telling me to go look so I did. They only had one small dog who just came up from Georgia the week before and she has skin allergies. Rosie was so friendly but not hyper and I thought she was a dog that would fit in my home perfectly . Well, she not only fits in but is such a good, calm dog just like Ruby was but totally different, Ruby never played with toys and Rosie does. I lucked out again adopting a wonderful girl. This was my first time adopting and I didn't really know what to expect or how it would go, as soon as I walked in I was warmly welcomed by Melissa one of the staff members she was really sweet and helpful throughout the whole application process and with meeting some of the dogs they have! I really recommend coming here and adopting not only is the staff very sweet and very helpful, but they have lovely and adorable dogs and pups who need homes. I adopted my puppy baby bear, I met his sister and one other pup. Bear is the most sweetest and lovable puppy, I couldn't ask for more. I have to express deep gratitude to Paws Crossed for connecting our family with its newest member. I'll begin by saying that we submitted an application with the required information long before we actually visited, and I would recommend that to anyone interested in adopting as it sounds like it makes the whole process much faster and smoother when you arrive. When we did come in looking to adopt a dog and gave a description of the type of personality we wanted, the staff immediately had recommendations. We were assisted primarily by Makayla, who was so kind and very transparent about the nature and potential comparability of each dog with our lifestyle. She and Joyce - a dedicated volunteer - introduced us to Valerie (now Josie), who wasn't initially on our radar but ended up exceeding our wildest expectations! We had a lot of time to get to know Josie (and meet a few other dogs) in a fenced-in area where she could be off-leash and show off her personality. Needless to say, she really won us over (as did the glowing praises everyone sang about her). Makayla provided us with thorough recommendations and guidance for introducing Josie to her new home, including what to expect during the early days. They do require that you have a leash and collar before departing, but if you don't have one or both you can purchase them there for a very reasonable price. We are thrilled with our new feline family member, and we were pleased with the way the shelter helped us navigate the adoption process during the pandemic. Filling out the formidable array of pet adoption paperwork sometimes feels like applying to an Ivy League college, but the shelter processed our application efficiently (under two weeks, and we were able to complete the entire process before we were even able to get an appointment from another well-regarded shelter). Once they checked our references and approved our application, we were able to take home our kitten in less than 24 hours. We picked out the kitten we wanted to adopt from their website. Because of the pandemic, we were unable to visit with prospective kittens beforehand, but to our delight the description they provided for his personality proved accurate. PAWS CROSSED Has great people that due love animals I adopted 2 German Shepard Mix and one Pure bred they lived with me for 14 years until they passed away when they were on RT 9 more than 32 years ago so they are not new to saving lives. I was 25 and single so they really checked me out. They seem well organized and check out potential new owners so there is a correct a right fit. So don,t feel bad if they check you out there are a lot of crazy people out there that are very cruel. I have a app in for a new cat now wish me luck ! Do NOT adopt from Paws Crossed Animal Rescue. They are withholding medical records from the cat that we adopted and here we are with a cat that is super sick. Because it wasn't "pertinent" to her adoption we didn't get the medical records that they had on her prior to us adopting the kitty. I have been donating to Paws Crossed for years (and the previous shelter). So naturally I went there when it was time to adopt. I submitted my application on-line so I would be ready to go when they had kittens. While dropping off a donation, just after they closed, Donna was kind enough to let me know my application was approved and I was shown pictures of 3 kittens that were going to be arriving at the shelter the next day. They told me all adoptions are on a first come first serve basis when I wanted to put a deposit down because I wanted to keep the 3 brothers together. Please be careful adopting from this shelter. Their inadequate descriptions and lack of medical records caused my family heart break that I wouldn't wish on my worse enemy. We didn't find out the dog we adopted had lyme disease until we had already decided to adopt her, at that point we couldn't say no we had already fallen in love with her. You'd think at this point finding out a dog they had for a week had lyme that they would do a full diagnostic on her they did not and after 8 months of having our beautiful dog we lost her to kidney disease that would of been easily diagnosed with a simple blood panel. This was our first dog and we had concerns about her right away, she drank frequently, she wouldn't eat, she needed to go out ALL the time, we brought her to the vet who insisted that she was probably just adjusting to a new environment, or the lyme disease was the cause. In our hearts we wanted to believe that but somehow knew by the look in her eye that someone had missed something. We spent thousands of dollars and sleepless nights tending to our dog, only for her to leave us within 8 months of having her. We called the shelter to tell them our concerns only to find out this dog has PAGES of medical records with major issues, lack of appetite, frequent urination etc we were never told any of this nor were we provided the documents until after her diagnosis. I'll spare you the horrors of kidney disease but it is one of the worst things a dog can have and there is really no hope for them. IF you must adopt from this shelter PLEASE take your pet to the vet and INSIST on a full blood panel and diagnostic. Now I have to wonder what could have been had we insisted on a full bloodwork when we brought her to the vet SEVERAL times with our concerns. She was only 2 years old and did not make it to Christmas. This has been the worst experience of my life and I would do it again for the perfect dog we got, I would spend all the money and go through all of the heartbreak but I hope and pray no one else has to go through this. read more

My fiancé went there to try to adopt a cat, and decided she wanted to put in an application. Since then she has been mercilessly grilled by their staff about her "qualifications" even though she has been a cat owner all her life. She fell in love with a cat and wanted to adopt it immediately, and by proxy, we both did. Then it got worse. We own a home, a townhouse, and, even though she put this on their application, they still went and looked the property up. Literal pictures of the property... and we were emailed back "it looks an apartment complex", which it is not. I told my fiancé to tell them to call me as the property is in my name, but apparently they decided, on their own, to call the management group. This ridiculous display of ineptitude and outright rudeness was bad enough. Then, they write her an email saying that the vet they contacted didn't have any records, which is clearly because she also got that one from a foster to adopt agency who helped with vet bills...which she told them. I understand a basic vetting process but with so many animals being killed in shelters each year, you would think that a place, once reasonably satisfied, would jump at the chance for an immediate adoption. They continued to email her back and forth and this dragged on for over a week. Its funny, because we are sitting here laughing at their last email, where they again demand more information for their fbi scale investigation. Its truly very sad because my fiancé loves cats and is a wonderful pet owner. This place missed out on adopting one of their animals because someone wanted to go on a ridiculous power trip. Verification of qualifications and safety is one thing, but this was downright ridiculous. We went to the humane society of westchester and not only did they let us actually spend time with a kitten we liked... We adopted her in less than an hour. Paws Crossed gave me my dream dog and had a lot of really helpful information about his past so that I was able to get him proper training for the trauma he endured before Paws Crossed rescued him and saved his life. We adopted Dr. Franklin pre-covid, in June 2019, and have nothing but good things to says about Paws Crossed and its staff. The Doctor is a spectacular dog, and he was obviously well treated, to put it mildly. [His name was Franklin; I awarded him his doctorate]. He adapted to his new surroundings in about 25 seconds, and we couldn't possibly be happier with him. They told us that he got along well with cats, and it was true all right; he and Biggie the Cat are best buddies and sleep cuddled together in the car. I would imagine that Covid has put some strains on adoption groups like this, which might explain some of the bizarre critical reviews here, [on some of these prospective adopters too!] but if you are looking to adopt, this is the first place I'd look. read more

I have adopted pets often, but never have I experienced such disrespect and heartbreak in an attempt to adopt a kitten. I was searching for over two months to find a kitten through every shelter within 50 miles. Finally I found a kitten that I was excited about and hoping to adopt. However, the required application that we fill out online doesn't register into their system. I submitted my application at their office, met and held the kitten for a very short time; I was being pressured and rushed. When I told them that I have a cat at home, they told me I cannot adopt without proof that my cat is current on her rabies vaccine. I told them that I will return in less than two hours, offered a large cash deposit to prove that I was serious, but was told that is against their policy. I gave my word. They made me believe that if I come back with the paperwork I could adopt him. Half a tank of gas and tolls to fulfill their requirements. This was Sunday. I called my vet in Rockland and begged him to wait for me so I could bring my cat over for a wellness exam and proof of rabies vaccine. I gave my word to these people that I would be back ASAP. I even offered a large cash deposit to assure them that I was committed and serious but I was told that this is against their policy. So, I race back to Rockland, grab Pippa, rush her to the vet in Pearl River NY on St Patrick's day which was so annoying, get the paperwork from the vet, rush back to Westchester, hand the paperwork to a staff member, and after she puts the information into her computer, she tells me that the kitten is no longer available. I was devastated and heartbroken. Meanwhile, the staff is clueless and being reprimanded by the head BIC, who is a woman that needs medication because just listening to how she spoke to everyone was belittling and insensitive and disrespectful. I'm sick now just recalling my experience with this shelter. I told them that I gave them my word; I could've lied on the application and said that I don't own any other cats, but I'm honest and too polite, otherwise I would have been able to complete the adoption. Their policy stinks, and they need to get some advice and education from other shelters. This was the worst experience I've had and I will never go back to that disorganized, mismanaged and disrespectful place again. They called my reference, my neighbor of 8 years, and she told them how well I treat my cats and even told them that I feed and medicate the TNR cats in my neighborhood twice a day and have even built insulated shelters for them when it's cold. You know, Paws Crossed emailed me after I was rejected asking for more references. I basically told them that my experience with them was so miserable and painful to the extent that I will never subject myself to them again, tear up my application. I met all of their requirements, I'm a homeowner in a quiet residential neighborhood with a husband, no children, and the means to care for an animal beautifully. Even my vet knows my devotion to animals, which is why he waited for me on a Sunday to help me adopt this kitten. To sum it up, these people make you feel like dirt and I wouldn't recommend this shelter to anyone unless you enjoy being treated like a fool. There's more I can say but I'm over it. I found a reputable breeder and was treated kindly and respectfully. My new cat will be here this weekend. I already received an apologetic email from them but I'm not a fool and I know that they don't care about what they put me through. If I didn't care it wouldn't bother me, but I do care and when someone screws up or does something that is hurtful, if you don't let them know they will continue to screw up. To conclude, good luck if you try to adopt from this shelter. Hopefully you will have a better experience, but I cannot recommend this shelter toThey have no idea who I am and I'm glad because they would feel really stupid if they did. Regardless of the policy of this shelter, why would I offer a $500 deposit if I wasn't serious about adopting any animal? It's easy to find a cat or dog but rare when you get an instant connection with an animal the way I did that day which was why I was beyond heartbroken. The way I was treated by the staff was with indifference. I understand that there are rules and policies in place but the kind response does not make up for the painful experience of truly connecting with an animal and not one person acknowledged this fact. The fact that I gave my word and was completely honest didn't matter to anyone. Who leaves that much money and reneges on the commitment? one star because i have too! please do not use this shelter!! they are accusing me of not following protocol when their own manager, donna who retired, allowed me to rehome a dog to people i knew very well and made sure she was brought back to the shelter first, before this transfer took place. i did not want luna to be back in the shelter system and tried for months to save her, even after 4 days of adoption, she got bronchial pneumonia and need incubation at a steep price but i wanted to save her. vet said give her back but i nursed her, tried to work with her until, with tears flowing, gave her to my friends up county. now they are blocking me from adopting another dog from the shelter, jennifer has accused me of listening to others who were not even involved. do not, i repeat, use this shelter under any circumstances. i did what i did to save a pup. how are they empathetic? its horrible how they treated me. RESPOND TO RESCUE MANAGER: How are you in your position? Luna was a sad story but lets block the Bad Mom from ever helping Adopt dont Shop! Its too late now Jennifer to come riding in with your story. How you run your Shelter, make decisions, and try to malign good people who want to have a happy ending is a real puzzle. My husband and I had a great experience adopting our cat from Paws Crossed. I submitted an application online and we came to the rescue a few hours later. We were taken to the cat room, which has such a nice setup for all the kitties, and we were able to spend as much time as we wanted with the cats. We needed to provide proof that our dog was up to date on his vaccinations, so we knew we would need to come back to adopt, but we weren't rushed at all. We came back a week later once the application was fully approved and met with a great volunteer who helped us find the perfect cat for us. We told her neither of us has ever had a cat before and we had a small, older dog at home. We ended up with the most loving 6 year old cat, who is basically the cat version of our dog, which is perfect! The whole process went smoothly and we definitely plan to return to Paws Crossed in the future when we are looking to add another furbaby to our family. read more

I cannot believe the depressing, disappointing and horrible experience we just had at this facility. First, I'm fairly certain between all of the available cats and dogs for adoption, there are more volunteers than pets on site. The volunteers are well meaning, but in the end, they are deterrents to adoption. We applied for pre-approval for a cat and wanted to possibly leave with one today. We started in the hallways visiting with cats who weren't ready or were not good for the community room. They seemed nice enough, but we wanted to meet all the kitties on site. Unfortunately for us, it was feeding time when we got to the community room. There were five volunteers in the room and barely any room for the two of us. The cats were agitated by all the people and the food, so it was hard for us to get a read in them. One poor little guy needed medicine in his food and promptly vomited up his supper. There was a little guy we wanted to spend more time with and maybe get to know. I was trying to ease him into it. He finally was warming up to me and we were on the floor together and a volunteer came in like a run away train to take him into a private room with us. No nuance. No subtlety in dealing with a cat. Just boom! It spooked him, he didn't want to go into the carrier, or be around people and that was it for that kitty. It was heartbreaking, but he didn't want to meet us and we weren't going to force ourselves on him. He seemed really sweet and I hope he finds a good home. We decided to try one more and spend time with a kitty from the hallway. The runaway train volunteer took us and the kitty into the room. She wouldn't stop talking and when the cat made a move to come to over to me, she pulled the cat towards her and kept petting him so I couldn't even pet him. At that moment, I realized the volunteer was more interested in her own experience with the animals than getting the cats adopted, we got up and left. We got into our car and headed down to Yonkers Animal Shelter. We were in the community room with two workers and one volunteer. It was a much nicer experience. We found a few cats that we really liked and like us, but eventually found a little boy kitty who we absolutely love and loved us back. So, Paws Crossed, thank you for being awful. You helped us to appreciate The Yonkers Animal Shelter and find a real lovey. I think you need some more volunteer training and need to make sure the volunteers are there to help the animals find their forever homes, not for their own personal gratification of being with animals. read more

I have to speake the truth with out any discrimination against nobody. I put an application to adopt a cat. I came today at 12:30 and signed all the paper and paid $175 for the can. Also I was forced to buy a pet carrier for $35. When I was handed her paper, I was told that the cat is due for her rabie shot. I simply said I thought all the pets in this shelter are up to date with their shots according to the website. I was informed that the shelter is not required by the law to give their pet the rabie shot. I said okay," can I have a paper from you guys stating that?" They gave me a phone Number of a person to call. I took the number however theSupervisor stated that my demeanor made her feel as if she was a liar. I stated that I apologize that you felt that way however I have the right as a customer who paid $175 to ask for the right information. I did not accuse nobody of lying or anything else. So the supervisor stated that she is not feeling comfortable with me adopting the cat. I don't understand why. Is it because I asked for the right info?! Or is it because I was looking for honesty?! Great experience! My wife and I were headed to another shelter when we decided to stop in at paws crossed. Josephine and Rachel there took great care of us. Josephine walked us through the entire shelter, and introduced us (via walk bye) to every dog in the shelter. My wife and I have three young boys and Jo explained which dogs would be a good fit for our family and which ones would be more difficult, given what we were looking for in our new family member. There were two dogs that our family was interested in, and Jo agreed they would be very good in a family with three young boys. Rachel then took over and spent time introducing us to each of the dogs. Honestly they were both great dogs and temperament was exactly as Jo and Rachel described. We ended up choosing one dog who we named Rocky. He has been amazing so far and we are so happy we randomly stopped into the shelter that day. They WILL NOT let you play with any animal unless you have an application filled out and meet THEIR qualifications of being a rightful animal owner. Do they really think that having an animal sit in a cage all day long is acceptable when there are many patrons willing to give them the love they deserve? Disgusting.
