That's really part of the charm though, and mud washes off. The folks that own and work here are super nice in my experience (shout out to the director who had the exact same shoes as my four year old - in a different size). They make it a fun and educational experience for everyone, but especially little kids. As a general warning though, they make a harder push for veganism than you might expect coming in, so if that sort of pressure isn't your thing, you may want to avoid the walking tours.

The facility is clean and friendly with staff who obviously care and love animals. We picked out a dog on our first visit and began the adoption process. Our puppy was too young to adopt (they wouldn't let us take her until she was old enough and was fixed) so we agreed to board her as fosters for a couple of weeks until she was old enough for the surgery. Before we could take her home, an officer came to our house and inspected the premises and asked many questions (this is after filling out a full application). I was impressed by his professionalism. After we were approved we were able to take our puppy home. The fees were nominal, especially considering the costs of the surgery and medical tests that had to be performed before they would release the dog. Once they did, we had a wonderful life companion. If any of the above sounds like a hassle, then think about why you are adopting. As someone who volunteered at a shelter I know how important it is to have potential adopters vetted. I felt confident after going through the process that this shelter is excellent.

Sadly, these folks don't seem to get animals. I am truly worried that these people are not qualified to assess individual animals' needs and will fail to place their animals in appropriate homes. They have general (and, frankly, arbitrary) guidelines for adopting out pets and the people I spoke to couldn't speak to any individual pet's traits or needs. It was a onerous, depressing and frustrating process just to locate pets on their site and after you spend a long, long time filling out repetitive forms, you have to go over and confirm all the answers on the phone with someone who doesn't have specific knowledge of the animal involved. Truly head spinning. Also, the service there is terrible, they will NOT return calls, you always have to call back and hope to get someone. I truly worry about where the animals in their care end up.

I was told someone would call me. No one called back. I was informed that I would not be allowed to take cats home in a cat carrier on a bicycle because that would be too dangerous. Based on what? Elly Monfett said because that is what she thinks. This in New York, the first state to grant equal rights of the road to bicyclists, in 1887. (All states do now.) Bicycling is safe enough for me, but not for the cats? Are you going to arrest a mother who is bicycling for having a baby aboard? Cats are more dear than babies? A number of surveys show bicycling on the road is no more dangerous than an equal time travelling in a car. Fred Costello offered to pick up the cats and deliver them to me, but Elly Monfett threw my application away and gave the cats to someone else. I will be happy when she is gone.

They did a wonderful job with socializing her and starting her off on training. The facility itself is beautiful. It's very clean and well staffed. We were able to spend time with different puppies out in the main area, which gave us the chance to see how they did with other dogs, people, etc. We probably spent two hours there and never felt rushed into making a decision. She insisted that my cat isn't serious enough ( my cat had been coughing for some time) in comparison to pets in accident. She explicitly said, "Someone could bring in their dog who got into a accident, therefore we don't know when your pet is going to be checked." - This after waiting for 2 hours. Why call yourself an emergency service of you cannot handle the pressure. As for the place, there's only 4 exam rooms with only a single doctor managing them. The lobby can only accommodate a few patients. Most owners chose to sit in their cars with their animals. This practice should not exist! And especially with the current staffs. Please practice what you preach - ensure all petparents seeking emergency veterinary services are treated with professionalism and empathy. Please recognize that we are often under severe emotional duress when facing a pet's emergency.

Talk about a new world! For the first time, my cat wasn't feral in the foyer or with any of the vets and staff at Rhinebeck Animal Hospital. The level of caring, compassion, knowledge, and experience by every one of the staff at Rhinebeck Animal Hospital is stellar. I realized what a sh*tshow Community Animal Hospital is in comparison! Customarily, my cat has to be sedated and contrary to Community Animal Hospital, it didn't take 1-2 days but 1-2 hours to recover. There's a lot more, especially paying 67% less on fees - the estimates were right on target unlike Community Animal Hospital which changes estimates on a whim. Most importantly, I was informed that my cat's lab work revealed a reversal of his kidney disease in the one year since he's been a patient at Rhinebeck Animal Hospital. That's not only a miracle, but a testimony to them!

If you're considering this as your primary veterinary clinic, I'd urge you to factor in the long wait times (even during emergencies) and the inconsistent level of service. While many of the vets are excellent, not all are, and the overall experience has left me very disappointed.
