every single time i enter this building,..i end up wishing i didn't,..and yesterday was no exception. first off,...it seems to me that an animal shelter should be mainly cage space, and storage...not some lavish 2 thousand square foot reception area thats bigger than a supermarket, looks like it cost 40 million, and only houses 2 desks. this is budgeting gone utterly insane and a waste of millions....and they refuse adoption applications for the craziest reasons on earth. regardless, i was ushered into adoption row,..where 8 out of 12 cat cages were empty??? (huh?) and of the two adult cats that they DID have to show me,..NEITHER ONE was ready to be adopted today. THATS RIDICULOUS. ok? it sure seems to me that youre purposely being hyper critical of applicants,...just to say you actually have homeless cats under your roof,....up for adoption,...so they don't shut the lights off and lay off half the staff. and thats utterly heinous and wrong...idc where you're from. "we are housing homeless animals!!" yeah.....homeless ON PURPOSE thats insane so,..that was the second time i showed up at dcspca with a new cat cage and new cat food and litter..etc...looking to adopt an adult cat,..and got sent packing. TWICE. both times i had plenty of cash and would have dropped an extra hundred on top of the adoption fee just because. .....but nooooooooo. for decades our family made huge annual donations to the dcspca,..totalling in the tens of thousands. but now,...after what i witnessed yesterday,..youre never getting another cent out of me. good luck in the future read more

Today I went to an adoption event here. I was excited to rescue another cat. I just spent an hour looking at cats. Found one I wanted to adopt and was told I couldn't because my application hasn't been approved and they couldn't hold the cat until it is approved. Next time you host an adoption event. You should publish that ONLY PREAPPROVED applicants can adopt day of and you don't hold pets. I understand you have to vet applicants I do! But tell people that. Don't let us go in, meet the animals get our hopes up to take one then Tell us oh sorry no you can't have that one today and we won't hold it. What's the point of having an event and not give people all the facts?! This is my second poor experience with the place. The bad reviews are correct. read more

the shelter NOW is nice; director is kind, new staff is wonderful; finally have a good trainer (force free) for the dogs. the volunteer coordinator is nice; extremely unorganized, overwhelmed, and just can't handle the job. She never returns emails, never follows up on orientations, scheduling new volunteers for walking/enrichment with the dogs. Just does not get back. Not acceptable. read more

So my mom who has owned, cared, and raised dogs her entire life has been denied to adopt through the DUTCHESS COUNTY ASPCA due to the one fact that our vet advised us to take our last dog to a vet clinic for her yearly shots instead of bringing her all the way down to Gardiner with a bad hip. When the gentleman said that the very had no records on Khloe or out dog before that Mishka my mom explained this and told him she can bring him ALL of her records from the past 7 years from this vet clinic and that we didn't have Mishka long enough to take her for annual exams because she died 10months after we adopted her due to diabetes no one knew she had including the Dutchess ASPCA who she was adopted from. He didn't say anything to that but basically told her that wouldn't work. When my mom stated it's far easier to buy a dog from a breeder then it is to adopt now a days and she said "so your basically telling me you're denying my application" he said yes and continued to say to her "have a good day ma'am" and left it at that with no explanation. This is absolutely ridiculous and infuriating. The ASPCA wants people to adopt instead of shop yet they place unrealistic standards on their applications and deny people to adopt. This New administrationat the DutchessCountyASPCA needs to see that things have changed and they are not going to find the "perfect" candidate to fit into their cookie cutter mold of an application.. Several years ago the ULSTER County ASPCA refused to adopt a rabbit to me because the women in charge of the small animals did not like the fact that I was in 4-H and because of that simple fact she refused my application. I will NEVER be trying to adopt from then ever again in my life. I'd rather got to a small unrecognized shelter then the ASPCA. A month process of filing out their online application 3 times before getting a return call for adoption. My elderly handicapped mother was in dire need of companionship. She recently had a kitten given to her that was a bit much for her to handle as he was far too playful and scratched her a lot. We had surrendered him to the ASPCA a month prior and he was adopted within a week. After bringing her to see the available cats she was excited to find an all black with the same name as her recently deceased 19yo feline. Adoption goes through. Large sign on adoption desk stating the power of 3 situation when having a new pet. Cat had hidden herself in apartment and my mother couldn't find her. Worried she called the ASPCA. They came, found the cat and removed it from her apartment, stating they are going to check on it and make sure it's ok. But will return the cat or perhaps have my mother adopt another. Never explaining what my mother had done wrong which to my understanding was nothing. Then days later after my mother being upset over the situation they decide that my mother is no longer applicable for adopting a cat and refund her money. Shame on Dutchess ASPCA. My mother did absolutely nothing wrong and you're singling out a very loving person whom just needed some companionship read more

Adopted a 7 month old kitten about a year ago, perfectly healthy. Just recently adopted a dog from them also 7 months. They had set up a dog meet for my already existing dog to meet the new one before I brought her home. They are both doing well and live in a happy loving home. I went into adopt a pet and pretty much treated me horrible. It would be the last place I would ever go.

We went there with my daughters girls scout troop to tour the facility the staff was very friendly - they have cats , dogs and even a rabbit was there and all the animals are so adorable but of course there was one that caught our eye! We went back two days later and adopted our newest baby Nala a beautiful orange tiger striped cat who is 1 year 4 weeks old The staff was really nice and helpful with the process of the paperwork to adopt her and in answering any and all questions we had with her I would defiantly get any and all animals from here from now on as they make sure they are healthy and do all that it takes to make them adoptable for you with full disclosure read more

It didn't take very long in my search for a furry friend to fall in love with the animal that I eventually welcomed into my home. The caring folks at the DCSPCA were so helpful and informative that it made the decision to adopt even easier than expected. Flower (a 5yr old shih tzu) has been such a sweet girl who loves all the attention that she has been receiving. The information that we were given in regards to her behaviors and personality were dead-on accurate, and I couldn't ask for a better buddy. I went to the main shelter (Hyde Park location) . The cat I drove to see & adopt was an hr & a half drive & she was emaciated! I mean skeletal in presentation... but I adopted her anyway. I got Pumpkin Pie home & she was quite the challenge, even with my experience with special needs cats. She also came with an earful of mites...?? Supposedly being seen & followed by a Vet who saw nothing wrong with either of these 2 issues. Pumpkin Pie was not appropriately socialized & it took me almost 2-months to get her semi-socialized. During these 2-months I reached out consistently via email asking for support & instead received a snarky response by the young lady that appeared to be in charge-Emily Giangaspro. Fresh mouthed, rude & not only was not helpful, but she told me since I had adopted not fostered, I was on my own. I've adopted thru PetFinder for over 25-yrs & this is the 1st time I ever experienced such lack of support & caring. I requested the main office contact information to discuss my concerns & never got a response which is why I decided to write a review. I did ultimately keep Pumpkin Pie as I couldn't bear bringing her back there... Terrible. read more

After many BAD experiences visiting multiple animal shelters around the hudson valley and Westchester area, we decided to drop by The Dutchess County SPCA. The building, condition, living quarters and most of all, the staff were wonderful. Everywhere we went, we had to jump through hoops and fill out ridiculous paperwork just to LOOK at a cat. At Dutchess, they more or less told us to dive right in. Giving us the option to spend some time alone with cats we were interested in. Everyone there were genuinely kind and helpful, especially an older gentleman that helped us along through our stay. And yes, we decided on a cat to give him a forever home. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. No matter where you are, it's worth it. This place is truly great. read more

I adopted my new best friend from the Dutchess County SPCA yesterday and I truly couldn't be happier. My mother-in-law and I were discussing the fact that the DCSPCA was having a name your own price black cat adoption special and next thing I know, we're at the shelter looking at cats. Needless to say, we have poor impulse control...and I now have a new cat. This place is absolutely beautiful. There are entire rooms of cats that you are able to go in and then there are two different rows of (comfortable and clean looking) cages with single cats inside. The DCSPCA even does personality evaluations on all of the cats and puts the results right next to their names so you can get an idea of what type of attitude your new buddy will have. This place is without a doubt looking to connect you with your new kitty soul mate (and they're incredibly good at it). If you're going here to find a cat, make sure you look in all of the cages and don't just spend all of your time in the huge cat filled rooms. If I hadn't looked down the second row of cages, I would have never found Kiki, and that would have been an absolutely horrible loss. The next time you're on the hunt for a new furbaby to love, most definitely come here. Not only will you avoid supporting puppy mills, but you'll give a rescue a new start and new home. This shelter has been around for many years and is still committed to temporarily sheltering mainly dogs and cats while attempting to find them a good permanent home in the process. I was a voluntary dog walker with the ASPCA many years ago and I cannot emphasize how much volunteers are needed, so please consider adopting a pet or volunteering your time or donating money or food, blankets, etc. read more

I visited the medical center there and while the receptionist was extremely helpful and nice the dr (Dr. Kennedy) was completely unknowledgeable and spoke very abrasive and matter of factly when i told her what the last vet had diagnosed my kitten with. I only went there because i couldn't afford my regular vet anymore. Afterward, i went to visit the adoption center that was practically empty from animals. As i toured the building i noticed that the majortiy of the animals were kept in locked rooms requiring a key. I wondered what would happen in a fire? i asked one of the volunteers there what their fire protocol was and they were gaga. No one would know what to do in a fire situation. i'm so distressed about this and wish that they would consider changing to the standard kennel cages that are easily accessed. I adopted both of my cats, Sydnie and Willow, from here a couple of years ago. Both of them are the sweetest girls - very loving, outgoing, and friendly. They both bring me so much joy. The staff is also incredibly loving and friendly. They truly get to know the animals in their care and are extremely helpful when it comes to choosing your new pet. All of the animals - both dogs and cats - are extremely well taken care of. The facility is very clean, which is nice to see. The adoption process was quick and painless and the fee itself is very reasonable - all animals come chipped and fixed at no additional cost. They also gave me a month of free pet insurance, free cat food that lasted me a few days, and one free vet visit at a veterinarian of my choice. I also liked that they made it very clear that if, for whatever reason, I could no longer care for for my cats, I could bring them back to the DCSPCA. While I would NEVER even consider giving my kitties away, it is comforting to know that they would be welcomed back to such a nice facility. It shows how much this shelter cares. read more

Beautiful new facility. So glad they were able to upgrade from the old smaller, cramped building. Love the rooms for the cats, so not all of them are confined to cages. The ones that are caged though all have nice spaces to relax in. The dog side is much nicer and calmer than the old facility. I'm sure it is better for the dogs! Walked in to the facility last July just to look around. I had only planned just to "say hi" to the dogs and cats. Well I was checking the dogs, and turned and looked in one room and fell in love. There was the most adorable beagle sitting on his bed. He looked sad and lonely. I was sold in seconds. I had them bring him into another room where I could play with him. He was still timid, but you could tell he was oh so friendly (and he knew when the staff walked by that they had treats in their pockets!) Well I left half a deposit that day to hold him until my husband could meet him to "make sure" (As if it was up to him!) Two days later I brought our new family member home. Let me tell you, that two year old beagle has been such a love bug since then! He's such a cuddlebug and such a good boy. One of the best mannered dogs I've ever seen (he is afraid of the cat though!) I thank the SPCA for doing what they do. I try to donate supplies or money to them when I can.
