I spoke with them and we developed a fix. I would have to have the screen and ports replaced, but, given the age of the laptop, it was not worth it. I did not have a recent backup, so I was in a bind. They gave me prompt service and great advice as to cost, given the age of the laptop and whether it was worth the effort. He wasn't able to recover the data and I was still charged the full $80 hourly rate. He did mention more advanced (and very expensive) recovery options, but I wish the limits of what he could do himself and the cost if nothing worked had been clearer up front.
