Night one for the pedestrian-only walk this year was packed with carolers and visitors (as expected) but Peaceful for us- year 3! Although we drove around looking for parking for some time we eventually found one. We wore light up gear but husband still couldn't find us when we happened to split up lol We noticed there's a school lot a couple blocks away charging $10/car. Good to now for next time. Peacock Lane reminded me why the holidays used to feel magical. The last few years have been weary since COVID, and it's easy to forget what community actually feels like. Walking Peacock Lane this season brought that feeling rushing back. Neighbors, families, couples, kids, all moving slowly side by side, bundled up, sharing space, sharing smiles, sharing the moment. House after house was lit beautifully, each one with its own personality. My favorite this year was the Home Alone house, playful, nostalgic, and impossible not to smile at. But what made the night truly special was hearing live music from neighbors, joining in caroling with complete strangers, watching families take photos in front of glowing homes, and realizing how rare and meaningful that kind of togetherness feels now. Peacock Lane is a reminder of what the season is supposed to be about. I left feeling happier and genuinely grateful. If you need a reason to believe in the holiday spirit again, this is it. read more

This is such a wonderful annual tradition. The entire street celebrates and each house is its own unique light display ranging from simple to Star Wars to religious and some in between. The Peanuts, Home Alone... each home is unique and fun. Through the years I have done something different each time and love that there are so many options to enjoy the space. They are actually lit each night until fairly late. That is so great for night people like myself and tend to be less busy in the later hours. This year I was a lot less mobile and was able to drive with a dear friend who is also mobility challenged. We happened by after 9pm during an evening with some rain. It was great! They keep it going until the new year also so it is a bit less busy after the holiday. They have many nights where they have cocoa stands available to get some cocoa and walk through and there are pedestrian only nights too! read more

I say, upfront, that I am OBSESSED with holiday lights and Christmas and anything having to do with Christmas, so nothing, and I mean NOTHING is over-the-top or too much "holiday" for me. That said, Peacock Lane was a bit much for me. (I never thought I'd say that. For real). Granted, we went on a "pedestrian only" night, when the weather was halfway decent, on a weekend evening, a week before Christmas. So, yeah, we didn't plan things well. It was a bloody ZOO! Think thousands of families, kids - young and old - melting down (some in full-blown tantrums), people with leashed dogs and some of these pets were literally shaking in fear from the masses of people and the noise and the lights, some people tripping over the tree roots and the slippery grass, all the illuminated balloons held aloft, people stumbling over stroller wheels or being hit by strollers... I could go on and on but you get it. Over-stimulation to the nth degree. The houses along this stretch of road are truly amazingly decorated for the holidays. It's like an episode of "Holiday Wars" when neighboring houses try to outdo each other in their holiday decoration displays. Each one is as amazing as the next. And I mean capital-A-AMAZING. And I loved the lights and all the themes, and I was inspired by many of the lighting techniques I saw. It was wonderful! BUT, word to the wise: do NOT take your pets here. Do NOT come on a "pedestrian only" night with young toddlers right before Christmas. Do NOT come with children or teens who are neuro-sensitive. (I know this all seems like it's commonsense. But trust me, it's NOT). Do NOT come if you are claustrophobic or agoraphobic. I think the whole experience would be better if one was slowly driving through in a car. Or if one does come on a "pedestrian only" night, perhaps if one visits earlier in the season, or a dusk, before it gets so busy. I loved the houses and light displays, the fact that it's free, and that it really exemplifies the local holiday spirit! I was NOT a fan of the hordes of humanity and petrified leashed dogs and all the toddlers screaming and having tantrums and wall-to-wall people. Plan accordingly! read more

Am I glad I finally went? Yes. Do I need to go back? No. Let me be frank and say that I went opening night, without rain and one of the only 2 dedicated pedestrian nights of the season so it was utter chaos. All houses were done up very classy and some of the themes were amazing to peek at but with my crowd/people anxiety, I was more interested in looking at the houses from the middle of the street versus taking the time to walk the sidewalks and study the details. There were street vendors on every corner of Belmont and Stark (they are not allowed within the private lane) and I could see volunteers handing out hot cocoa within Peacock Lane itself (we opted to not wait in the very long line for our donations-encouraged cup). Not only that, many of the businesses around the Lane stayed open late to host pedestrians to have a cup of their own coffee or take a holiday-themed photo, which I thought was smart and sweet for all of the families visiting. The street is small - less than 40 houses on this single block so the walk goes quickly. It did give me great nostalgia of neighborhoods I used to visit as a child in my home state but, again, I have "checked the box" of Peacock Lane and probably will never return and let other families enjoy. read more

Visiting Peacock Lane at Christmastime is a FREE and festive experience! This opportunity exists solely because homeowners are willingly spiking their electricity bills to amuse us around the holidays. I had my favorite displays but must note that every single house showcased their Christmas spirit in some way! Loved it. In terms of logistics, we stayed in our car and there was a steady flow of traffic wanting to come through, so you had to keep it moving to be polite. You can also go by foot and take your time enjoying it that way. Parking nearby will be tough but if you're willing to park a few blocks away, you'll find it fairly quickly. There are other Christmas light options that are staffed events, but you'll have to pay of course! The Grotto and Zoo Lights might be more your speed if you're looking for an event type of experience. It's heartwarming to know that Peacock Lane has been Portland's Christmas Street for a century - thanks to everyone living on Peacock Lane for spreading the joy and merriment! I distinctly remember the first time I visited Peacock Lane with my family in the late 1980s. My parents always liked to pile us kids in their hideous Oldsmobile station wagon that somehow managed to survive my entire childhood, much to my chagrin. The windows fogged up, the fake wood paneling was always chipping off, and I'm almost certain my friends made fun of me whenever my mom dropped me off at school. Looking back I now realize how many fun things we did in that car, like drive-in movies, weekends at the beach, summer road trips... and our annual pilgrimage to Peacock Lane. For our first visit we bundled up so we could roll down our foggy windows, and armed ourselves with a thermos full of hot chocolate. When we turned onto the lane after waiting in a long line of traffic, we were immediately greeted by a cascade of twinkling lights adorning the historic homes, one after another. Each house was vying for attention with its own unique display of santas, reindeer and snowmen. In fact, that first night we visited, I remember being enthralled by a Gremlin display in the front yard of one of the houses. My parents wouldn't let me watch the movie, but I was obsessed nonetheless. I remember being scolded for hanging out the window and squealing with excitement. Carollers sang, one family presented a live nativity scene, and the entire street was buzzing with excitement. That night was truly something special, and it has been an experience we've repeated year after year since. The themes have changed, and the technical capabilities have improved, but the holiday magic remains the same. The tradition of illuminating Peacock Lane dates back to the 1920s when a group of neighbors came together with the idea to celebrate the holiday season with curated lighting and yard displays. We finally got to experience Peacock Lane. It was totally worth the cold and the wait. We walked the sidewalk and car traffic was open on the street as well. It was tight on the sidewalk, and there were more than a few really Ryder people trying to get through quickly and pushing past families and people taking photos. But the lights. Wow. The lights! It's abundantly clear that these people take the event very seriously and really try to put on beautiful display of lights for the community. We went with two other families with their kids and the kids saw Santa, some beautiful lights and had a Christmas memory. I cannot wait to do this again POST COVID and walk in the streets and have some more room. But if nothing changes I'll still return. It was wonderful. read more

"Let's exchange the experience (Ye-oh, ooh, ooh)" - Running up that Hill. I must declare this a good place to see Christmas lights in the PDX area. Normally when I am in the state of California, I would go to a street called Willow Glen which is not very far from my flat. In Portland, Peacock Lane is just like it. There are a lot of streets with some very gorgeous Christmas lights. Each one of the is different. While it is a bit of a tough drive from my suburban hood in area, it's well worth the trip. All you have to do is park and walk around. I like how each house has a different style of Christmas lights. Some feature different characters, while some are decorated with different lights that flash. Note: Like Willow Glen in Sans Jose, please be careful whether you are driving or walking, cars might not stop if you are crossing the street. It's also very easy to get lost here too. If you are having a hard time parking please take the bus. It could be a lot easier. In another part of PDX you can see a mob of santa statues too. read more

It's a wonderful sight to see for the Christmas holiday with the lights galore! an amazing feat for a street to come together and put on a light display for so many others to enjoy. When I was growing up, we had a street very similar to this. It was very nostalgic to walk down the street with my friends. The location is very close to a coffee shop where we grabbed some hot chocolate to enjoy while strolling while being in awe at the lights. My only dislike is the crowds (we went at 7/730PM) feeling like you have to keep moving and not taking the time to relish in the all the hard work the homes put their time towards. read more

Whoa!!!!! Blown away. Okay, whatever I have to do in my next life to end up a homeowner on this street I will do-- says the engineering guy who built a mini waterpark in his backyard during the pandemic. I arrived on the 2nd night of operation (December 16, 2022) and was pleasant surprised by how well everything was set up and everyone was so pleasant and enjoying the company of the strangers around them. I must have seen 100 dogs, so if you have one that likes walking in the cold and gets along well in crowds, bring 'em!! Cyclists: oh man... there were quite a few riders who all politely dismounted and walked their bikes or parked at one end of the street and strolled along with the rest of us. One woman had a cool bubble machine on the back of her bicycle.. I mean, who doesn't like bubbles, right? I fell in love on the spot.. with the bubble machine, not the lady! Focus on the bubbles... I need one! She was polite enough to tell me where she ordered it from and it is already in my Amazon cart, lol The homes: These folks have it down. The decorations and themes range from Star Wars to Rudolph to unicorns, to the real Santa who is ready to talk to the kiddies or you or both. Themes of the Grinch, Elf, the Peanuts gang, and even a few minions... Heck there were live carolers too... Oh and the lights... That is what you came for and you will not be disappointed (and neither will the local power company come the next pay period)! My favorite home was the Home Alone themed house. I love the first two movies, the soundtrack, the Funko Pops and now this home. I would come back again just to see this and use it as a excuse to go to Ken's Artisan Pizza - more on that in my Ken's review, lol. Although I didn't partake, my second favorite thing was the freebie hot cocoa and hot cider kiosk.. Yep... you read that right. They did however accept donations and I think it only proper to tip these considerate folks, especially on the cold nights (like when I visited) when they could be cozy and warm inside their home. In closing, I will say that if you missed checking this out during the 2022/23 Christmas season, do yourself a favor and come check it out next December. You can thank me later. Cheers! read more

OK keep in mind John this is a free lights walk put on by the fine people a peacock lane. Now this place will not rivals to lights this will not rival Portland International raceway but... this is an amazing feat of what a neighborhood can do for the enjoyment of the holidays. My favorite is to go on the 1st weekend so there are no cars on the road. The shut down the street with the help of Portland police and even though it is much more crowded it is much easier to go about when you have the whole road. Always make sure to check the time it starts because it does not begin at 1st dark it will in fact begin later in the night usually 6:00 p.m. I've made this a yearly staple for at least 1 walkthrough 1st weekend and also one or two drive-through whenever in the area. It gets better every year it seems and this year with many fresh painted houses and the same quality displays it did not disappoint. Now what I go here if I did not have small children, or was on some kind of 1st date, probly not. Maybe that is the grinch in me. I would definitely recommend giving it a try though it is more difficult in the rain thing that there aren't as many ways to cover yourself with such a crowded area. The use of umbrellas, although look down upon in Portland, Would be nearly impossible here with the crowded sidewalks and covering of lights. read more

This whole street goes all out with their Christmas displays! And yes, there was a house all-decked out for Hanukkah, too. There wasn't a single house that wasn't decorated and several had themes such as Star Wars, Peanuts, etc. Young or old, this is a fun holiday treat for everyone to enjoy! I definitely recommend going on the pedestrian-only nights where cars aren't allowed to drive through, as it gets pretty crowded and is much easier to have the whole street for folks to wander around instead of everyone being confined to the sidewalks. There is a large park in the area, Laurelhurst Park, that you can park on the perimeter of and walk a few blocks over to Peacock Lane. The lights came on at 6 p.m., so we arrived around 5 p.m., parked along that park & then walked to a local coffee shop for some coffee before heading over and it worked out perfectly. read more

Scary Night I went to Peacock Lane over 25 years ago and they had Horse Drawn Carriages for people to ride on. The road had two lanes of traffic going in both directions and it was very dangerous with the horses on such a narrow road. I entered Peacock Lane from the north and just after I made a turn to the right two horses were coming at me at full speed with the red carriage in tow behind the horses. I thought I would die because the carriage was eye level coming straight at me as the horses veered off and one broke lose running into the park. The one horse bumped into my truck as the corner of the carriage went thru my windshield and A Pillar. Rocking Horse Ranch was responsible for this and the owner told me that he would take care of it. The next day an article in the Oregonian said that a horse broke loose and broke the mirror on a car. And Rocking Horse Ranch said that there was no damage done. I had red wood embedded in my truck from the carriage and inside my truck. It was a pain to get my truck fixed. Rocking Horse Ranch denied everything. read more

Of course this is a Portland tradition! How else would you get your fill of beautiful Christmas lights? Every year I make my way to Peacock Lane, rain or snow or the occasional dry evening around Christmas time (!). The cheerily lighted and approriately themed and decorated homes on both sides of the 1-block street are a delight for young and old alike. My personal favorites are the Grinch and Winnie the Pooh. For those other tastes there are out-of-this-world Star Trek and a local Mrs. Santa Claus themes to celebrate as well, and a ton of others. Parking is difficult; drive together and park a couple of streets over. Or take the bus, and get off at the Walgreens (but don't park there and then cross the street). I very much recommend that you make this free activity a part of enjoying the dead of winter, that comes with this period of necessary introspection, while enjoying the visual ongoing festivities. read more

Christmas Street: Decking the Halls since 1932 Every year 4 blocks of a central-Eastside neighborhood becomes, "Christmas Street". Peacock Lane is a Portland tradition. I've been coming since I was a baby, so it will always be special to me. Fairytale tudor-style homes, reminiscent of Disneyland structures, are decorated each year on a volunteer basis. Each house does so with their own take on the holidays. Star Wars, the Grinch, and Charlie Brown are a few worth mentioning. The best way to visit Peacock Lane is by foot. The first three nights are pedestrian-only. Cars are allowed after those nights. The invention of cell phones has made navigating the lane trying at times. It gets tiring waiting for couples to get the perfect photo, so they can upload to Instagram. On our recent visit I watched a couple pretend-kiss for longer then should be allowed. Blech!! People can be sweet and helpful too! Many offered to take our photo and complimented our camera-ready Corgi. She ate it up! I read that there was a wedding held here this week. Talk about getting into the Christmas spirit. Occasional carolers will lighten the mood with holiday music. A free Cocoa/Hot Cider booth is open from the 15th-24th, from 6pm-until they run out. There is no parking available on the Lane, and please don't park at the Walgreens, as they will tow you. Plan to park several blocks away. The homes will be lit each night from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. December 15 through Dec. 31. The street was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Cost =free! read more

Peacock Lane is a small street with residential homes decorated with Christmas decorations and lights (pictures truly are worth 1000 words, be sure to view my photos so you can see how awesome this place is). On Christmas Eve, my husband and I drove by here and there was a real long line to get over here. Not wanting to wait in this long traffic, we decided that we come back. So the night after Christmas, it was almost empty. We enjoyed seeing all of the beautifully decorated as drove slowly down the street (as the sign was written, be sure to shut off your headlights when you drive down here). This street reminds me of the Christmas decorated homes in Pasadena, California at Upper Hasting Ranch (https://www.yelp.com/biz/upper-hastings-ranch-pasadena) but that it is just 1 block and not a community. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Probably better to come either much earlier before Christmas or thereafter (you can also always park somewhere and walk to get a better close up view of each home). read more

Step 1 - Park far, far away. Step 2 - Visit the Good Food Here cart pod on Belmont (with partially enclosed seating) and enjoy a little food and drink. Step 3 - Fill up your thermos with something warm. Flask optional, but encouraged. Step 4 - Walk slowly (not really a choice) through one of Portland's quaint holiday traditions with friends or family. Step 5 - Quickly proceed somewhere warm for a post-walk drink (apple cider, Hot Toddy, etc.) Thanks to Danni D, we had our first Yelp UYE at Peacock Lane in 2010 and are continuing the tradition this year. It is good fun if you aren't stuck in traffic and enjoy it for what it is... cute homes with an excess of lights and holiday spirit on a short avenue. That's what surprised me last year, how small it is. There is about 95% participation and I imagine a small elderly woman with a clipboard and a bullhorn grading the homes and making sure they conform to the seasonal norms. "More tinsel! I need at least three more angels on that roof! You call that festive?" Some homes are themed (Dr. Seuss) while others have cute nods to other styles and traditions. You'll see folks wandering the streets dressed up as Santa Claus and last year there was a horse drawn buggy. I live in the 'burbs, so I'm accustomed to large homes going all out with the latest and greatest in LED technology. Peacock Lane is a bit different and completely charming in its own way. So many favorites. My fiancé have been there multiple times since high school. Since we are high school sweet hearts, going to the lane really brings back memories of our first times visiting. I'm really confused by the hullabaloo. This is nothing even remotely impressive. It is a small street, with very nice homes decorated tastefully but modestly. Nothing special, no big displays. I went two years in a row thinking I missed something or ended up on the wrong street. I had told my kids we were driving to look at lights, and we saw more lights on the two mile drive than we did on Peacock lane. It is nice to look at if you happen to live on the street. If this was your neighborhood, you would certainly think your neighbors' homes looked nice. However, I don't see the draw to willingly wait in traffic or park and walk. The street is so short, you wouldn't even be able to enjoy a cup of cocoa before getting to the end . Update : After receiving a few nasty messages about my inability to understand tradition and my general status as am outsider, I gave it another try. Year 3 and my entire family whined and complained. Nobody was excited and didn't understand why I would want to try again , but I was determined to figure this out. Obviously, if this is a meaningful tradition to your family, keep going . Enjoy it ! Typically, Yelp reviews are for newcomers, those who have not tried something. My review is for people from other cities, perhaps those with impressive light displays. Us horrid Californians are accustomed to the Hollywood/Disneyland experience in everything we do, and this is not it. I've been here every year since I've lived here, and it's always a wonderful experience. I love seeing all the lights and the creative takes on holiday themes. I have soft spot for the Star Wars and Nightmare Before Christmas ones. I recommend coming during the pedestrian-only days, as it's much easier to get around. If you park by Laurelhurst Park, it's only a few blocks away, and there's a lot less chaos. It's a very nice place for Christmas lights from the houses and the street , and you might want to go by bus 15. So you don't need to find a parking spot in the neighborhood. This is the second time I return to see the Christmas lights and I still want to take lots of pictures to share with my friends . Peacock Lane is a lovely place to see some Christmas lights during the holiday season. Located just of 39th on the east side, Peacock Lane is a few blocks of homes that have been lighting up their homes since the early 1920s (did we have electricity back then?). Suggestion would be to not drive the few blocks. Police regulate the traffic and waiting on the street until you get into the block probably wouldn't be the best way to get excited to see some lights. I was able to park a couple blocks away no problem at 6:30 and walk the Lane. Plus, if you walk, you can stop by the hot chocolate booth halfway through for some free cocoa! Many of the homes have cool themes with their lights. There were a couple Star Wars props, Peanuts, and Nightmare Before Christmas. A few of the homes do seem like they just throw up the bare minimum to prevent any unbearable shame put on by neighbors. Overall, it's a great way to get in some holiday cheer and spend an hour of your evening. read more

Many of our Winter Soltice traditions come from Germany and England. That includes lighting trees and houses. Even that aside, Portlanders, with their traditions from wherever they have migrated from, love some holiday rituals and magic. In that spirit, the residents of a one block long street sign a covenant to display holiday lights. Portlanders know they can walk, bike or car to view those lights in evenings. They have a web site announcing hours for vehicles or pedestrians only. Suggest, if it works, for you to walk the pedestrian nights. The lights on this street are beautiful! I wish there was more to look at though. It seemed like we were able to walk down one side if the street and through the other side in less than fifteen minutes. I won't be surprised if the homeowners one day boycott this long loved tradition as I was in shock about how disrespectful people were. Why would anyone think that it's ok to be on someone's property just because you want a picture of you and everyone in your family with the props/decorations etc.? I adore this long-standing Portland tradition, and salute the generous residents of these few blocks for their time & electricity bills donated to the festive delight of Portlanders. Sometimes there's even a resident or two outside handing out cups of coffee & hot cider. My birthday falls around the time that the lights first open every year, and I have included a stroll on this street in my birthday plans on several years. Go on the pedestrian-only nights for maximum enjoyment. read more

Mmmaybe cool for kids except you'll have to park far away and walk in the cold. My kids would implode. I went via bike on my commute home which is the way to go... though I don't love biking in this area. Anyway, it's pretty cool but also hokey so don't go expecting something interactive or incredible. Probably fun for a couple without kids in tow. Maybe go on a weekend so you're not waging war vs. traffic. Make sure of what time the lights go on b.c that's a thing. BYOCocoa. read more

I haven't been there to visit in awhile, but Peacock Lane has been a firmly-entrenched part of my life since birth. Back in time when Portland was still a small town, my family often drove through several times a week (I was raised nearby), and we never missed driving through on Christmas night for years. It was my first experience with a light-sound extravaganza and I usually fell asleep overwhelmed by that and a day of fun, gifts, food, and family. Of course, each of us has things that make Christmas real for us. Peacock Lane (along with the White Stag sign, the Thompson Elk Statue, and the West Hills Cocktail Glass light arrangement, etc) are gifts that Portland gives to us that makes a Portland Christmas real for me. read more

Peacock lane is always a hit! I'm giving it five stars because the home owners on this street take the time and money to make people smile during the holidays. This year my family went after Christmas so I'm assuming this is why it was not Overwhelmingly crowded. Beautiful homes, with amazing Christmas light decorations. read more
