One of my family members had a devastating fall that resulted in a hip being broken in 3 places and…read morerequiring surgery right away. After surgery my family member selected James River Nursing for rehabilitation. The pluses are it's in a nice location and the exterior and entryway are nice. There's a small, nice library up front and a very nice sitting area for residents who are mobile. I didn't visit all the rooms but in the room that my family member was assigned to there was an old fashioned bed that you literally had to hand crank in order to lift or lower the head of the bed. I'm not making this up. I was stunned. The call button was very sensitive and sometimes didn't seem to work so our family member would call us from the cell phone and we would call the nurses station to send someone to the room. Is that good care? Nope. The food was like school cafeteria fare so we were bringing much better food in. My family member said that the day and evening staff were caring and helpful and I witnessed that while I was there each day. BUT the overnight nurse was abusive. My family member had just had SURGERY and the night nurse snatched her in the bed when she was struggling to move her leg and foot. I was told about this after my return to Texas not while I was still there. Which is why I'm not in jail now for slapping the shit out of that nurse for abusing a patient. And I'm afraid that my family member likely isn't the only she has treated that way. Those patients trust her and it's disturbing what she's doing. She should not be a nurse, she should not work over night shifts and she shouldn't be unsupervised around those who need to trust the staff there to assist.

The only reason for the low rating is for one of the two ladies (she knows who she is) in their…read morebilling department. The rest of the staff i.e. nurses, therapists, aides, housekeeping, servers, etc... were wonderful. I was there with only Medicare as a form of insurance that paid for 19 days. On the 29th day the lady from billing came to my room wanting payment for the days Medicare wasn't fully covering. I was still lethargic from evasive surgery received prior to my arrival. I said I couldn't afford to stay and asked if I could make payments and she said, "we don't do that here". I then had to leave prematurely which to this day has effected my recovery negatively. I had to call the owner/manager that did set up a payment plan. I recently received a call from the same rep. of the billing dept. saying I missed a payment and to send it "ASAP". I refuted her claim with canceled checks showing they deposited my payments and I was current. She did not apologize and blamed it on a "computer glitch". Since being coherent now since my last meeting I confronted her about why she or the other lady waited so long to tell me Medicare stopped and why one of two said they don't take payments. She told me neither one would have said that even though I have a witness that heard one of two corroborate what I said was told to me. She then hung up on me. I called back and asked for the supervisor. I gave her a synopsis of what transpired with her employee. Her employee lied about hanging up on me and I asked for an apology from her about hanging up on me and falsely harassing me for payment. The supervisor said her employee would not apologize. After more frustrating conversation with the supervisor about her and her billing staffs' horrendous lack of customer service she apologized on her behalf. If the initial billing agent had apologized for the harassing phone call, admitted her mistakes and not hung up on me, it would never have escalated to what ultimately transpired and I wouldn't be writing a negative review. Stand up for your rights as a patient and don't accept bullying from administrative departments like the one at James River Care and Rehabilitation Center in Springfield, MO. ..

I was placed there because everyone else was full. I missed my meds the first night because their…read morerecords showed that was in another room. My cousin asked that they correct their records and they did not. Some of the med techs would come in and only give me some of my meds. I would ask where the missing meds were and more than once they would ask me what was missing. I told them to check their records. They should know what I take. There is a part of your record called a *medication record.* Awesome for finding out what meds you are supposed to take. One med they pushed me to take and because of the side effects I told them I was NOT going to take until I talked to my doctor. When the facility MD came to my room he told me that the hospital ordered it. I have since seen my PCP and he said it was never ordered by any of the hospital staff. I am diabetic and there was no correlation 60% of the time regarding the timing of my insulin and the timing of meals. One day the nurse came in to check my blood sugar after my meal and asked did I eat my lunch because my sugar was so low. I had. Small portions and gross but I did eat it. One evening they brought in a high carb meal. I said I wouldn't eat it and asked them to bring me something else. They said they would and they didn't. I asked that they find someone to explain why I was not going to eat that night or tell me the nearest restaurant and I would take a cab for a decent meal. They did at that point bring me 2 cold boiled eggs and 2-4 oz containers of full sugar yogurt. A grand total of 260 calories. I told them Lean Cuisine doesn't even make meals that small. I had a friend bring me in 2 boxes of shelf stable milk after that because you have to eat protein in order to gain your strength back. Check with Google. I thought everyone knew that. I told one of my visitors that I thought this was 3rd world rehab and started to consider leaving there with or without medical approval. Oh but wait - maybe them making patients miserable is how they get them rehabbed. At the hospital I was only able to get up with assistance. Roll through the doors at Spring Valley and instantly became independent. Simply amazing!! One night I called using the "call button" and waited 1& 1/2 hours with no answer. I picked up my phone and called in in order to get some service. Was told they were short staffed. They told me they had 1 shower for the facility. Nope. I guess I'll go home dirty. I talked to the Director of Nursing, a Nurse Practitioner from the facility, a Nurse Practitioner from my insurance company, and the doctor (who claimed that the hospital ordered a medication that they had not) and no one seemed even slightly concerned. As someone else wrote "I would give them zero stars if I could." Please - unless you are going to stay with your loved one - do NOT agree to moving them there.

MIL accepted even though she has dementia, is a fall risk and an escape artist. She is NOt in memory care. Had to ask for a bed bath after 5 days in and still was not given until next evening after more requests! Family hired sitters 24/7. Pretty much a mess but very typical of how administrators run their facilities. Speaking of administrators: do your job! Get out of your office and check on the staff and the residents. Make sure your nurses and med tech are not on their phones!! I have seen this problem all over that building. The building is a nightmare to navigate. No room number guides on hallways. You just stumble around until you find someone to ask for help. And that's a big if. Also, the main door is some distance from the parking area. Elderly who are disabled have to walk quite far. There should be handicapped parking much closer to the front door. Would not recommend this place.
