Ok, look. This is one of the few dedicated bike paths in the Honolulu metro area where you *mostly* don't have to worry about cars and/or tourists killing you on the roadways. For that alone, it deserves three stars. The problem, however, is what most people have noted. It's not that there are homeless people dotted along the way: there are. It's not that there aren't a couple of sketchy areas: there are. It's not that there is some debris on the trail: there is. The problem to my mind is that the city's solution was simply to create a half baked route and let it be. In terms of urban planning, like much bike infrastructure in Honolulu, there's much to be desired. To make matters worse, there doesn't seem to be regular, consistent upkeep throughout the entire path. So you often have broken glass and other debris along the path. More heinous is that there are places where there is 3" of pole sticking out of the ground from where someone cut the metal barricade that prevents motor vehicles from accessing the route so you now have a piece of metal jutting up from the ground that is poorly marked for any unsuspecting cyclist. And some of the bridges--mostly toward the stadium--look dilapidated (but they're still functional, for now). In other words, much like the homeless population in Honolulu, the city seems to have taken a laizze faire stance toward the upkeep and maintenance of the path. It's clear that whomever had the thing built is either no longer around or not a cyclist because no way would a politician who uses the bike path allow it to deteriorate like that. Ok, now for the good. As I mentioned, it's one of the few dedicated bike paths in the Honolulu metro area. It's about 5-6 miles *one way* if you're lucky. So a good running path but a poor substitute for a bike path. But, after you get past the sketch areas (mostly on the stadium side), you're golden. The asphalt isn't the best maintained in some areas but if you pay attention for debris and people, you can get some decent speed albeit for a short period. As others mentioned, I wouldn't come out here at night or in the early morning. I'd bring a buddy if you can during the day. On my ride, people I passed nodded, waved, or were indifferent to me as a rider. I didn't feel unsafe but I was alert. Protip: i had the hardest time finding the trailhead on the stadium side. If you're coming from Salt Lake Blvd, you have to cross over Kam Hwy so you're riding in the wrong direction. Ride along the Kam Hwy sidewalk for a bit until Kam Hwy crosses under Hwy 201. There's a sidewalk down where you can access the trail. I took some photos. Protip 2: if you need to drive & park, you *may* be able to park at the Best Buy as the trail passes right behind the store. Check the lot first. I'm not paying your towing fee! This would be awesome because the most maintained part of the trail is from Best Buy to the Waipahu portion. read more

It's OK because now the bike path goes all the way from Aloha Stadium to Ft Weaver road and is nicely paved. The only 2 negatives I have is occassionally there are stray dogs (I got bitten once) and the homeless encampments. To their credit so far I have not heard of the homeless campers causing any trouble. read more

Came here for the first time with my oldest son. My coworker told me about this long bike path from Aiea to Ewa Beach. We didn't know anything about this path so we just followed Google Maps lol. We parked at Restaurant 604 by the Arizona Memorial only to find out that the entrance there has been closed for a while now. Then we relocated to the Aiea park and also a nearby residential area only to find out the path is under repairs so we ended up giving up for the day. My other coworker later told me the path reopens by the Neil Blaisdell Park so this time we gave it another shot. We didn't want park in the park itself because there were a lot of homeless and shady looking people in the area and with the catalytic convertors being the "hot item" to steal, I didn't want to chance it. We ended up parking near Cattle Company further up the street and started our journey towards the park and went Ewa side or West bound of the park. The path overall is easy, buuuut highly recommended to travel in groups of at least 3. There will be areas where if you feel like you're biking through the backyard of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre with all his victims car parts removed and left out in the woods to rot away. Instead of my son telling me, "wow dad, what a beautiful view of the battle ships," he instead tells me, "wow dad, I've never seen a real junkyard before" lmao. Anyways, definitely go when there's light out. The path seemed pretty easy. I didn't even realize we rode to the end bike path until we got to Waipahu Depot Street where the Police Academy is. It does appear that it continues on, but I assure you that it doesn't because my son and I learned the hard way that it's a dead end. We crossed this super rusty broken down bridge full of tetanus, then continued biking on a doodoo smelly dirt road with even more trash until we reached a similar bridge, but 50x worst. There was no way I was making my son nor was I gonna cross that bridge so we turned back around and rode all the way back, but this time we kept riding past where we started at the Blaisdell park and went towards the Aiea direction. It went a little past Best Buy Pearl City until you reached a little homeless camp filled with empty spray cans on the floor and one of the worst smells eveeeer. My son thought there were dead bodies in the tents like the movie, Stand By Me because the homeless people laying in the tents looking high af. There were even decomposing chickens in the water. I would recommend not riding Kokohead side or East bound of the Blaisdell park. On the positive side, there are glimpse of a beautiful little taro/watercress patch, pond, the ocean with a view of a few battle ships, and just a different take on riding through the woods than the normal city bike lanes. You'll see some other bikers, joggers, and people on their mopeds tryna work on their forearms when throttling. According to my RunKeeper app, our route was just under 11.50 miles. Enjoy and be very careful. Don't forget your water and bring some cash in case you decide to stop in Waipahu to snag some yummy Filipino desserts. Be aware of your surroundings and bring something you can defend yourself with. I didn't bring my pocket knife at all (Pinocchio emoji inserted). I probably will never be back here again. After getting bikes a few months ago, my husband and I have taken interest to the various places we could ride them safely. After having breakfast one day at Neil Blaisdell Park, we noticed the bike path. Curious, we came back a few days later with our bikes to explore. The best things about this bike path is that there's such a large stretch of path that's unobstructed from regular traffic, making it an excellent choice for riding. I love being able to ride fast on some stretches - there's hardly anyone on the path! We encountered a few joggers, pedestrians and other bikers, but hardly any in comparison to other rides we've done on the island. It's an interesting perspective to ride along the water, past the electric plant toward Waipahu. There was a beautiful and quirky taro patch, which was an unexpected plus. The bike path itself wasn't obstructed, so riding was easy going and fun. The negatives make me shake my head. I think of how nice they could truly make this area. Yes, it's rather industrial, but the city really needs to clean up this area. There are homeless people living along the water. While they mostly keep to themselves, the smell in certain areas is unbearable. While riding from Blaisdell toward Waipahu, we witnessed what I suspect was a drug deal near the entrance of a new stretch of path. This path went back into the woods, and it was smelly, and frankly, scary back there. I sort of got the feeling that is was generally not safe back in the woods. We turned around. We were sad, because we wanted to ride through and see where the path ended up. Instead, we turned around and headed toward Aloha Stadium. We stopped once at the site of a feral dog who looked territorial. After some time resting, we continued on and the dog went away, luckily. We rode down to nearly the Stadium and back again to the Blaisdell Park. I wish the city could tidy it up over there. The scenery really isn't bad, but when you add old, abandoned homeless mattresses, the smell of feces, a feral and mean looking dog, etc., it doesn't exactly become a destination. I'd come pedal here at your own risk. I wouldn't walk or jog here alone, maybe not even in a group. If they cleaned this up, it would be such a nice supplement for commuters and the rail. They could even open up safe cafes/eateries with bike parking. Imagine: an actually NICE place for local families to ride their bike. Is it a pipe dream? I sure hope not! read more

Basically, if the kids ask to go again, it's a thumbs up place. Only gave it 4 stars because of the cons listed. It takes us 2 hours on bike, round trip, from aiea to the soccer complex, and back if we're on cruise mode, 80 minutes in competition mode. We've ventured towards Waipahu (downhill path beside the gold course) couple of times which adds an extra 20+ minutes. Add another 30 minutes if we stop by festival marketplace. My husband and son went for the first time today, with their one wheels. My husband is a big guy and said it reminded him that he still has stuff to be afraid of. The homeless encampments are really bad and caring machetes. Lots of hazards on the path, very pilau are. Would not recommend for family or for single. If you go, go in groups. My husband isn't often speechless, but he would not go there again. Two stars for a small area that was maintained and the length of the path. read more

In this photo you see concrete barriers preventing the path to continue. C&C of Honolulu haven't decided to continue the pedestrian path toward Kapolei. The Pearl Harbor pedestrian and bicycle path was the original O'ahu Railway & Land Co. that ran between 1898 to 1947 from Honolulu, Waipahu, Kaena, Northshore and Kahuku. Totaling 71 miles of railroad that was built by Ben Dillingham. One day this path will be similar to Spring Water Corridor Path in Portland, Oregon, a 21 mile pedestrian and bicycle path. Which was originally an old railway. The city and volunteers have taken great measures to cleanup the path from large amount of trash left behind by homeless people. The city has moved the homeless into housing but some homeless prefer to live on this path so they keep coming back. read more

The bike path has gotten a lot better since the most recent sweeps to clear the encampments and garbage, but I know this will be an ongoing enforcement issue. I personally wouldn't recommend bringing small kiddos here, especially since some of the encampments have had big dogs. The path itself is a really rare place in Hawaii, since it's such a long, uninterrupted path where people can ride, run, or walk. (People on foot are tolerated, as long as you make sure to step to the side when bikes are coming.) Some of the areas are freshly repaved, but other parts of the path still need some work. During the warm months, the mosquitos activity can be high. (Bring the bug spray!) Some is the areas on the path also don't have a lot of shade, so if you are on the path during the day, you'll probably also want a hat and sunscreen. read more

The bike path goes from the Navy admirals boathouse last Lehua Avenue all the way to Waipio Point Access Road. In total, it's about five miles long give or take a little. It's a scenic route. You'll see quite a bit of Pearl Harbor. I'm amazed folks can get so close to the Harbor itself. It's not an entirely shady route so bring your hat and sunglasses plus some water. What is concerning is the growing homeless population. There are so many tents alongside the route compared to when I walked it five years ago . Recently, I walked the entire route with two other people. I'm glad I had company. None of the homeless said anything to us but one or two gave looks that weren't friendly. Some of them have set up permanent homes complete with little garden sculptures and solar lights. One man was peeing into the waters of Pearl Harbor and he didn't appreciate us walking nearby while his backside was exposed. Trust me I didn't want to see him either! I think the City has plans to clean the area. I hope so. That would make it safer for the cyclists, pedestrians and joggers. If you go, you can certainly go alone. I know someone who jog this route on their own. But I wouldn't go alone and I certainly wouldn't go alone in the evening. Just doesn't feel safe. Also, watch out for moped riders. They aren't allowed on the route but nonetheless they are there. read more

This is one of the only bike paths on Oahu that is considered relatively safe and easy for all levels of cyclists. People who commute to and from work will use this bike path on their way to/from town. It is the best alternative to riding on Farrington Highway from Waipahu to Aloha Stadium. One end of the bike path is in Waipahu near the Refuse convenience center, behind Servco Toyota. The other end will spit you out near Aloha Stadium/Arizona Memorial. The bike path prohibits any motorized vehicles. There is one area where there are housing along the path and their driveways are next to the path. You'll know when you see it though. Technically, mopeds are not allowed on the bike path, but there are some people who do it anyway. Hopefully HPD catches them when they patrol the area on their ATVs. There are walkers and runners who will also use the bike path. Everybody should stay on the right side in the direction they are heading. There isn't much shade on the path, so make sure to be prepared for sun and heat. Water stop can be at the comfort station at the Blaisdell park. The pavement isn't the smoothest, but still rideable for those road bikes with the skinny tires. This is a great place for a mellow ride, or run. The Hawaii Bicycling League is trying to push the city to extend/connect the bike path further west. Please support. We can all benefit from having a safe place to bike!! read more

The roads are paved really well and a huge perk is that there's hardly any potholes or weeds on the path. However, there are some sketchy areas where you feel like you could be followed and attacked! Try not to text too much if you're walking and make sure you're watchful. read more

I rode the entire path back and forth Sept 04. 2017. They just opened it back up after removing the homeless encampments. I started out on the Waipahu side to the west and rode all the way to where the Navy had a locked fence on the east side. You could tell they did a lot of work cleaning it up. There were many places where the grass has to grow back from where tents were set up. I saw a few mongoose run across the path. It's still a mess going past the junkyard, it goes right through the middle of the junkyard. The ride along the Navy ship area is good. The wind was from the south that day. Normally it's the NE trades so there wasn't much chemical smell as I went through the industrial area, although there was one place where it it was foul smelling, like paint thinner. Blaisdell Park, in the middle of the ride, was also cleaned up, and really looks nice. As I rode further toward the west past the underpasses, they too looked good from all the clean up. Only toward the end was there still a community of homeless with piles of junk and trash. Maybe they are next on the cleanup. I had to dodge an old car backing out of that encampment. Along the route, there are cars that use it to access their driveways legally. I saw a few cars parked down off the path in areas I'm sure they weren't supposed to drive on. It's about 5 miles one way, and portions aren't shaded, so a hat and sunscreen may be needed along with water. It would be a 5 rating by me, except for the junkyard and trashy homeless camp still there and the chemical smells in the industrial area. read more
