Completely exceeded our expectations in every way possible! We arrived at sunset and were greeted by Mark, the owner. He showed us around the common area (aka the hangout spot) where the shower + bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room is. There is also a toilet + sink in the tiny cabin, but no shower which was completely fine since the shower in the common area was so nice and private. When we got to the cabin there was bouquet of freshly picked wildflowers, cooler full of bottled water and ice, citronella candles and foldable chairs waiting for us. So accommodating. The next morning Mark had coffee waiting for us when we arrived to the common area. We all sat together for hours chatting about everything under the sun. A few of his friends stopped by to say hi, so we met some of the locals as well. Some of the best people I've met in a very long time. It is built into the hillside, so the second floor is the main entrance. Downstairs is the kitchen and living area with a delightful patio. The second floor has a large bedroom, bathroom and its own patio. The third floor is a loft with beautiful, wood-carved, queen-size bunk beds and foosball - the perfect place to stash the kids if you couldn't get away without them! The retreat is an ideal way to be "off the grid" for a weekend or full week of personal reflection, romance, fun with friends or a family retreat, but off the grid is an option since the cottage is wired with internet and satellite television. The decorator must have a great sense of humor. It is sophisticated enough to satisfy the most discriminating, but there are stuffed animals displayed like hunting trophies and peering out from cubbies. The road to the retreat is gravel covered and steep in spots. I can imagine it would require four-wheel-drive in the winter and you wouldn't want to drive a ground-hugging Ferrari at any time of the year. That ruggedness helps keep the riff-raff out to provide an incredibly quiet experience. (If your Yelp shows the Google map to the retreat location, you can see by the twisting, winding roads how far off the beaten track this respite is located!) It is near Asheville but really out by itself so you feel privacy and accessibility. This is not roughing it. My Lord, they even had an Ipod Dock (which I had no idea existed) It would be a good idea if you go to bring an ATV, plenty of places to roam on the road. It is also a great place to ride bikes,hike all that stuff. We saw a ski resort at the bottom of the hill but the kids seemed to be taking the chair lift up carrying their bicycles Oh and the critter are abundant but fortunately the cute little hot tub is privately fenced. The place is small but has lots of beds. We are a couple and it was perfect small and very unique like a storybook tower in levels. We especially liked the Gratitude Tree, where we were encouraged to hang a message of what we were thankful for on this tree in the woods just outside the cabin. If you have a large family and want to spread out this may not be the place but I will be back for a hunting trip Also not easy to find but the directions were great, also back there the gravel road is king, that may require a 4WD in snow but we were there just at beginning of the leaf season which was awesome. The Asheville area was quite a pleasant surprise they call it the Paris of the South but this isn't supposed to be about that huh? Bring Food and Spirits with you. Nearest store is like 15 mins away. This was the perfect turn down the hype and get out of town, relaxing time we needed to be together as a family, play games, enjoy the farm animals and most of all meet some new friends and let our son get his wiggles out. He loves to travel and has been traveling with us since just 18 months old so he likes checking out new spots just as much as we do and this was the perfect little find in a small town in Tennessee. Some of the tiny glamping homes have private facilities but each has their own personal space/restrooms. The Meadow view has a sauna and the two A-frame have an outside deck with a sink w/well water and a mesh net/bed overhanging the creek along with a table and chairs to relax outdoors.

My issues were with communication and their lack of transparency. We made our reservation online and when we got our confirmation email, there was no check in or check out time. It is also not available on their website. When we called, we got a voicemail for the Hot Springs high school & laughing waters campground. Weird. But okay. Left a voicemail, never got a call back. There are also no check in instructions. So we arrived at 3:45 on the day of check in. No station, no instructions, nothing. So we call again and a woman answers and is slightly annoyed that we are calling. Informs us that it is self check in (whatever that means) and I s not until 4 pm because they all work. But since we are there we can go ahead and set up camp. Campers should be aware that while their photos depict largely wooded areas, they are not. The campsites are set up in a field on the edge of the river. So you do have trees, but they are largely at the edge of the river. A few campsites had more trees, but ours was in the field (blue heron site). This is fine, but the photos make it seem like you're in the woods. And I'm the summer, I would imagine that the direct sun is brutal. They advertise eco toilets - it's a porta-John. Literally nothing more. Also advertised a first aid station which we did not see, did not find signs for, nor was it in the confirmation email. We didn't need it. But if we had, who knows. A map of the property would have been nice. All in all. I would definitely recommend Laughing Waters. But I think they should be more transparent about what their property and procedure looks like.
