Pedal is the best bike shop I have ever worked with. After moving around the US from MN, to WI, ND, MS, GA, IA, CA and now MI it was always a task to find a great bike shop since I love to ride. Pedal clearly tops the list. They have fixed my families bikes, including my son's custom Ti bike adding a Rohloff bike shifting system, which carries a lifetime warranty. I have purchased several bikes from Ryan and Tim at the downtown store and they always take care of any needs I have for service or repair. My favorite purchase has been the Cervelo Aspero gravel bike, which I rode with my son from Seattle to Chicago two summers ago. Pedal was recommended to us by our super cool neighbor friends who know everyone. They are much younger and way more hip than Mr. MVP and I and as they know a little bit about everything I trusted their judgement when it came to a bike shop. I have an upright trike and because of its size it will not fit in our VW, so having my Sun Trike serviced can be a challenge. This year I wanted the rust around the pedals removed as well as a regular yearly maintenance performed, so I called Pedal to discuss my options. I was promised the rust would be no issue and the part could be easily replaced. A pick up time was scheduled for the next day and I felt better. I am an epileptic and I don't drive, so my trike is like my car. I use it to join Mr. MVP on walks with the dogs, to go visit my parents around the corner and when I need to ride to physical therapy across the street. I never leave the neighborhood, but my trike is very important to me. When Pedal called two days later on Saturday saying my trike was ready and they could drop it off, I was ready - and very excited for my new and rust free pedals. Mr. MVP was home, so we all went outside and when my Sun Trike was brought out of the van I knew instantly there was still rust. I had to keep reminding myself that rust on a bike is normal and removing ALL the rust from a bike for some people is a little weird. I spoke to the young man (he was so nice) about fixing the issue and even he admitted that he was a little hesitant about my reaction because he knew I wanted all the rust gone. He said they could replace the part (which is what I thought they would do initially, but apparently they just sanded) and he would install it at my house. Problem solved. Mr. MVP asked him to take his very fancy riding bike in for service and we asked him to take my Mom's foldable (it squishes down to fit in an SUV) trike in for service because it is "wiggly". Pedal is a solid bike store with a pretty good inventory of bikes (they have Sun Trikes!) and knowledgeable staff, but when you need something specific done on your bike just be very extremely clear about what you want and do not let the staff glaze over your request. If it's not done right, ask for it to be completed correctly. The squeaky wheel does indeed get the grease. read more

Is no stars an option? So i was 3 miles out of town today, on a ride, when when I got a flat. With nothing but a water bottle and 10 dollars in my kit pocket(the day I forget my spare tub) I did the only logical thing and put my bike on shoulders and walked. While coming though town, still 3 more miles to walk home, I stoped at Pedal hoping to see if I could get a spare changed for my 10(the only cash I had on me at the time). They said no saying the whole procedure was $17, so I walked out with my bike back on my shoulders to continue, my only half completed, trek home. I don't know what kind of bike shop you want to shop at, but I want mine to be run by real bikers. I feel stupid for ever having thought this was a place where a cyclist could go be surrounded by people who understood them. I will never spend another cent in this store. read more

This place was awesome, esp.after a terrible experience elsewhere in town *cough* Alfred E Bike *cough.* The environment is very low pressure, with an emphasis on bike servicing and parts, though they seem to have a wide selection of new bikes too. I went in for parts and repair advice/pricing. Despite it being quite busy, they had plenty of people on hand, and the guy who helped me was very knowledgeable and friendly; not condescending at all, despite my obviously not being a bike nerd. He offered a couple quick suggestions, found and ordered the right part for me at a good price, which i got in a couple days. Overall, very professional, competent, and low-pressure sales environment. This shop does it all! I have ridden mountain bikes for many years. I was on a 26 in tire hardtail and pretty much hated it. I would visit the shop sporadicly to fix issues with my old bike. One day while getting some parts, I was speaking with one of the staff at the Portage location . She asked if I had ever seen the Trek Stache? I had not, so she told me all about it and told me the downtown location had one in my size. All it took was one ride and I bought it on the spot. Since then I have become a regular at both shops. They always help me out and never try to up sell me. I can't tell you how much I enjoy talking with the staff and learning more about the sport I love! I went to the Portage location of Pedal Bikes for a rear shift cable and housing for my mountain bike. The woman that waited on me was pleasant and helped me with what I needed. I paid and left the store. When I got home, about a 35 minute drive, I began to install them on my bike. The ends for the housing were way too small for the housing. I made due, but the repair was sub-standard since the ends were too small to seat properly and fit into the frame. A day later I received an email request for a customer satisfaction survey. I answered it honestly that the parts didn't fit and forgot about it. Later in the afternoon, I got a call from an number that I didn't recognize. I let it go to voice mail. It was Tim from Pedal explaining that I was sold brake housing and that's why the ends didn't fit. Tim asked me to verify my address so that he could ship the correct parts to me. I called back and told the person that answered that they had my correct address. That evening, I received an email that they had shipped the parts priority mail for next day delivery. I received the parts next day. I was surprised to receive 3 cables, lots of housing and ends with cable end caps. I would have been happy with just what I bought. It was also a nice gesture for Tim to put a hand written note saying "Sorry, sincerely, Tim". I rated the whole thing 4 stars since I had to repeat the repair again. I will go to Pedal again for parts if needed. read more

Pedal is a welcome addition to Kalamazoo's bike scene. The shop has a couch, an open work area where mechanics are willing to drop what they are doing to answer questions, and offer good advice. Not snobby, snooty, or intimidating as bike shops can be. They carry Scott, Guru, and Jamis. The owner is friendly, and committed to the bike community in Michigan. They hosted a cyclocross race this October in conjunction with the Tricats, Kisscross, and the Kalamazoo County Parks dept. read more

Brought in a dusty garage bike to add training wheels. Technician cleaned up the bike, adjusted the chain, lubricated, mounted the training wheels and adjusted the seat while the child and I waited. I was only charged for the training wheels which I purchased in shop. Such good service resulted in two happy customers. read more

Great shop(s) with a deep heritage -- the Romence location was formerly Breakaway Bikes. Most of the "lifer" staff is still there, and many grey hairs from the Kalamazoo peloton work there and the downtown location part time. Seek out the older staff for a mature and "no BS" about product lines and bikes. read more

Before I chose this store, I called around to a few other shops to inquire about a few bike accessories that I wanted to purchase. One store said they had those items. The Pedal employee asked several questions to get more information about what I needed. That extra service and willingness to help me before I even set foot in the store was the reason why I chose to shop at Pedal. When I arrived, the employee (I believe his name was Nick) was very helpful in finding what I needed for a last minute gift idea. So my husband gave this store a second chance because of many local people telling us to try it again. When he went in, he was greeted, was asked a lot of questions about his experience and options were shown to him. He was able to test ride the bikes he wanted and then purchased his bike the same day. I was happy that this was a total 180 from our first experience. However, when we visited the other Pedal store on Romence Rd to get his bike chain adjusted, we didn't get the same help my husband received from W Michigan Ave. The guy helping him wasn't personable and my husband was telling him that it didn't feel right when he tested it outside. The man wasn't personable and it seemed he was getting frustrated with my husband when all my husband wanted was to make sure the chain was fixed so we wouldn't have to come back. Because of this experience, this is making me question whether or not to buy another bike from either Pedal stores for the inconsistently of staff being personable and helping us. We do prefer the Kalamazoo store over the Portage store! read more

Overpriced, and terrible! The employees are very friendly and willing to answer any questions, that is true. But they messed up my Canondale mountain bike with their so-called "tune-up" (to the tune of $90) so badly that I had to bring it into Hometown Bicycles to be fixed again only three weeks later (this time costing $60). The shop is too big and high-volume for any of the bike specialists to be very knowledgeable about every type of mountain bike. Apparently female mountain bikes are not their specialty - after the tune-up, the gears were shifting terribly, the wires mixed up, and the brakes stiff and rubbing. Not impressed, and I wouldn't recommend any Kalamazoo resident who is a competitive road or mountain biker to use this shop - not worth it!! read more

My family and I are very happy with Pedal. Our first experience was shopping for a MTB for my wife. Since she is very short none of the local stores carried her size, they all offered to order one for her but Pedal was the only one that didn't require a commitment to buy - quite a surprise since they were the smaller and newer store. My wife has been riding that bike for the last 2-3 years. Their service is top notch. they work with you to understand your needs and budget. At one time I had a major mechanical issue with my top-tier rear derailleur and chain - they recommended a lower tier (same brand) that saved me big $$ and I haven't been able to tell the difference in performance. they recently helped me with a roof cargo box and got the manufacturer to cover the damage, outside of warranty. They are very friendly , not pushy and want to understand your riding needs and budget. they work with you and in the rare case when something goes wrong they readily take care of it - like a rubbing disc brake that took a couple tries and required a creative position to ensure it surfaced. Tim creates a great atmosphere in his store that permeates to his team. Pedal is also very active in the community, sponsoring races and events. read more

I wish I could give this store 6 stars! My new go to bike shop. Awesome place with great service and great people! My mom and I went to the Romence store looking for bikes while I was in town visiting, I was looking for a mountain bike and my mom was looking for a hybrid. I know a little bit about bikes and knew some of the components I was looking for but my mom is totally new to biking and had no idea what she should get. One of the guys there spent hours with us going over different bikes and having us test ride them, he was great with both of us helping us find what we needed and never being condescending and never rambling on in technical speak that we couldn't understand. He explained everything thoroughly and you could tell how passionate he was about biking. We both ended up buying a bike that day and I was so impressed with how helpful they were even after we bought they bikes! They helped fit us to make sure everything was at the right height and gave us a lot of great information on our bikes and best of all they helped us load them up in the car! The first bike I ever bought from a real bike shop was in Illinois where I live and they were fairly helpful but I got the impression that they didn't want to help me that much since I was new to biking and wasn't planning on spending a ton of money. After I bought the bike there I asked if the fit looked okay and if they could help me adjust the seat and they just said it looks fine and sent me on my way. Shortly after that I played around with seat height and ended up raising it a couple inches and it is way more comfortable to ride now. Anyways going from that experience in Illinois to such a warm, pleasant experience at Pedal in Michigan has sold me on the fact that Pedal is one of the best if not the best bike shop in the area! The thing that really sold me on Pedal even after having such a great experience there is when later that week I got a handwritten postcard in the mail thanking me for my purchase and saying they hope I have some great adventures on my new cinder cone. I was blown away by that personal touch, I mean how many stores do that anymore? I can't think of any other than Pedal. I'm living in Illinois at the moment but have decided that if I need anything for my bike that isn't an emergency purchase, I'll wait till I visit my parents and head over to Pedal. With how well they treat everyone there, they deserve my business and I'm happy to give it to them! My first visit to Pedal was for repairs for my old but sturdy bike and never was I made to feel inferior for having an antiquated mode of transportation and they did a wonderful job. Recently I was looking for a resolution to a request made by my father for better gripping pedals for his, again, antiquated Schwinn Air Dyne. Not only did I receive a response that was friendly but Tim took the time to ask questions about the situation to better help find an answer and had the other location call me with a definite way to make things better for my father. I had called a few other places and the responses I received were well below adequate. We may not have yet picked up the item but we will be there to purchase them very soon.
