Baltimore Bakery Crawl stop #1 of seven places! My best friend, her college bestie, her husband, and I spent Sunday 2/2 exploring different Baltimore bakeries. I tried one thing here, so this review is based on that! Pekara was a charming and unassuming bakery. It felt very Eastern European and when we arrived around 10am, a lot of things were sold out. This is definitely more of a takeout spot, but you are able to sit there if you'd like. The person behind the cashier was really kind and patient. We tried the blueberry puff. And for what it's worth, this was the group's top pastry of the day. I love that they toasted it up for us. The pastry itself was buttery perfection and the custard inside was really nice. One of us bought sourdough bread to-go that seemed really delicious. I'd come back to this bakery to try more. read more

I wish this spot was closer to me! Stopped in to see what bakery/pastry goodness was available as we arrived around 12. Still had a good selection. Got some of our favorites -Pain Au Chocolat, Apricot cookies, Bambolini Hazelnut & tried some new ones -Strawberry Walnut cookies, Artichoke, Mushroom, Spinach & Feta & Cheese Puffs, Galette (fruit) & a Chocolate Chip Scone. Everything was delicious! Also ordered a Cappucino which was tasty. Service was friendly and upbeat as always! I'd walked this block a dozen times and for some reason never realized the bakery was there. I was so glad it caught my eye early morning one day as I was looking for treats. On a warmer November day there were small tables outside to enjoy the pastry and donut we narrowed our selection down to. Each item was tasty and well made. Flaky and delicious with one treat and gooey and comforting for the other. We are looking forward to being back for savory and sweet offerings in the future. They also have cakes, cupcakes, and bread - I think I found my new go-to for those last minute treat days! read more

I had no idea this bakery existed and just happened to see it. I dropped in and am so glad I did! I purchased about a half dozen croissants and a baguette. Having worked for years as a college student in French bakeries in several cities, I usually judge a bakery first and foremost on a plain butter croissant and a standard baguette. Pekara hit it out of the park on both counts. Absolutely classic and first quality! I would say these item were the best I have ever had in Baltimore. The other items I purchased were also very good. The space itself and the interior is not all that aesthetically pleasingly. But the quality of their baked goods is outstanding. I hope this business thrives. I will certainly be back. read more

Yes, so good!!! You simply have to go and try anything. We went around 2pm on a Sunday. A lot of the things were sold out but there were a few things left. We opted to get a few as shown in the picture. Wow!!! Everything was soo good. Again, I repeat, this was left over stuff from the things that were already sold. If these were this good, I can only imagine trying the the things if I get there early and I would still get everything I got today again. The chocolate croissant was soo flakey. The chocolate was the perfect amount, not too much, and too little. The cookies were amazing. Highly recommend and I'll definitely have to come back! read more

I finally checked out Pekara Bakery this past weekend after thinking about in since I read a piece in Baltimore Magazine about the bakery in January! Pekara Bakery is owned by Rale Mihajlovic, who is originally from Serbia but has been in the US since he moved here to play soccer for the Baltimore Blast 25 years ago! What I love about this bakery is that Rale has brought a taste of Serbia to many of the offerings! Pekara makes bureks (traditional Balkan pies), which I hope to try next time! I only wish they had more Balkan specialties! On this first visit, we tried a few smaller pastries (two savory and one sweet), and they were great. The bakery isn't huge, but there are a few places to sit inside and a bistro table or two outside! I will definitely be back to try more (including those bureks)! read more

Pekara Bakery is located on a popular strip of Cold Spring in Roland Park. While it doesn't look like much on the outside, this little bakery has some amazingly delicate pastries. I managed to find a free parking spot on one of the residential streets. I popped into Pekara to grab a few pastries around 11am. Rookie mistake; try and go in the morning! By the time I arrived, most of the pastries were sold out or were slim pickings. The cashier even told me it had been a very busy morning (surprising for a Wednesday)! I ordered a chocolate pastry and an almond croissant. Both were delicate and expertly baked. My only regret is that I didn't get there earlier so the pastries were even more fresh and I could pick a few more options! I'll definitely be back on an earlier morning. read more

I've wanted to try Pekara for a while after seeing pictures of the baked good! Pekara did not disappoint. I stopped by after a morning walk and ordered the prosciutto and pesto croissant, which was delicious. The croissant was super buttery and flaky, and the prosciutto added a nice amount of saltiness. One thing to note is I arrived around 10:30, and by then, many of their items were already sold out. So if you want a more extensive selection, I'd recommend coming on the earlier end. read more

Stopped by here the other day to try Pekara Bakery because my friend had been raving about this place recently. The store is on the same street as Miss Shirley's and a few other places so I was really familiar with the street it's on. Inside was really clean and they had all their pastries that they bake fresh every day on display. Everything looked so good that I had a lot of trouble deciding what to order. I ended up settling on the prosciutto and pesto puff, the giant puff hot dog, the ham and cheese kipfel, and the nutella brioche. Though everything was great the prosciutto and pesto puff was just delicious and I found myself regretting that I didn't order a second one. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who comes here though I feel like you can't go wrong with anything here. read more

The chocolate croissant was fairly good. Very flaky! Not much space inside so plan on taking your baked goods to go. I like that they have a lot of savory options too! Drove out of my way to check this spot out with a friend and bakery lover from out of town and was pretty disappointed. Much of their menu was sold out, to be expected since it was the afternoon, but the service was abysmal-the two men working were unfriendly and unhelpful and the pastries I did get-a hazelnut bombolini and an apple crumb pie were both subpar-the donut didn't taste fresh at all and the pie was overly sweet and I was surprised to taste what did not seem like fresh apples, but pie filling-I could totally be wrong about this, it may just have been that the filling was overly sweet, but either way, it was a miss. I also expected them to have more of a bread selection from their online presence, but all they had was a few baguettes. I may give them another shot based on the other positive reviews, but my experience this past thursday, 11/11/21 was not positive. read more

Don't let the unassuming storefront fool you - this is the real deal! It's a very clean and tidy little bakery on Cold Spring across from Miss Shirley's, but it's not heavy on decorations or frills. There are a few stools along the wall, but it is set up mainly as a take-out operation. The website explains that it's owned and run by a Serbian baker, but the bakery has a fairly wide range of European-style baked goods. When I've visited, I've seen amazing-looking bread (ie spelt, whole-grain, and rye, and baguettes as well). There aren't that many places in Baltimore where you can find things like a buckwheat loaf. I've tried the pastries, including very good chocolate and almond croissants. The almond croissant in particular had a generous amount of almond paste inside which was a pleasant surprise. The bagels are made by hand, and come in glorious large shapes - they're a far cry from the cookie-cutter bagels you see in the supermarket. There were at least half a dozen varieties. I'm planning to go back and try some of the Balkan specialties, like meat and cheese bureks that looked particularly good. They have a very limited sandwich menu, including prosciutto on baguette, turkey on rye, and caprese. They have a limited selection of drinks, including (of course) coffee. But the focus seems very much on the baked goods. This seems like a great addition to Alonsoville - a family-owned small business with foods that are both unique and universal that will be an attraction for people in and outside the neighborhood. read more

Pastry doesn't get much better than this. We wanted something sweet as well as something savory. We ordered a spinach and cheese Börek and the bread pudding. The Börek had a light ricotta like feta blend which complimented the excellent puff pastry. The bread pudding had similar subtleties with a light cinnamon touch and eggy presence. read more

Great place to pick up a pizza and salad on the way home! The pizza is amazing- wonderful thin crust with creative toppings. Once you try the shiitake mushroom pizza, you will not go back to regular mushroom. The salads are also very flavorful and a great complement for the pizza. read more

I stumbled upon this little gem this morning on an early-morning walk with my two year-old. I do mean "stumbled" upon as my two year-old had seen to it that we were up in the VERY early morning and I wasn't yet fully awake when I peered into the window of this Old World-style bakery. Curious, we popped in and seeing a plethora of our favorite pastries, we decided to do a proper sampling of the classics: pain au chocolat, a blueberry puff pastry and, of course, the mark of any great bakery, a classic croissant. The pair manning the shop were extremely warm to my son and I and seemed to be excited to be sharing their creations with their customers. And on to those creations: easily the best pain au chocolat I've had this side of the pond and the croissant, absolutely spot on -- just the right mix of light crunch on the outside and soft, velvety warmness on the inside. And then there was the blueberry puff pastry, which for me and my eldest son stole the show, topping even the pain au chocolat. Mommy, meanwhile, who hails from Spain and knows a thing or two about good breakfast pastries, sang the praises of that pain au chocolat. In short, our stop-over in this little Cold Spring den of deliciousness turned a "what-did-I-do-to-deserve-to-be-up-at-this-ungodly-hour" morning into a "it's gonna be a good day" kind of morning. I have been going to Pekara since they opened this summer. I used to love Rogenart but it closed on Falls Rd and Pekara is owned by one of the bakers/workers from that establishment. The 12 grain bread at Pekara is excellent and is pretty much identical to the Finland(ia) bread at Rogenart. It is a sandwich type loaf covered in seeds. Hearty, tasty - delicious. The other breads at Pekara are tasty. However, I wish they had thicker crust. Today I purchased a round Semolina. The bread has excellent taste but the crust is thin and soft. Please, if you read this, make the crust on your bread thicker and crunchier. read more

What a nice addition to the neighborhood. An appetizing array of breads and pastries, from a variety of culinary heritages - Eastern European, Balkan, and French. My first time there this morning. Tried a peach Danish, a baguette, a crusty kaiser roll with poppy seeds (how often do you find those anymore), and two types of boerek - a spinach and cheese, and a potato. Not all for breakfast - some where for lunch. And all were delicious. And like a real bakery, they open at 7 AM - so that you can get fresh bread for breakfast. And the staff could not be more friendly. Look forward to making this a regular stop. read more
