Matriarch Coffee lived up to every bit of the hype -- and then some. I'd been hearing about Matriarch Coffee for a while from friends near me in the DMV, and I finally made the drive up to Baltimore to see what all the hype was about. Short answer: absolutely worth it!Long answer: I'm already thinking about my next excuse to come back. Walking in, the space immediately delivers. The aesthetic is awesome-- the kind of intentional, beautifully designed interior that feels warm and curated rather than staged. It's trendy without being cold, and the Inner Harbor location makes it that much more special. I know there is a huge renovation planned "down the harbor" , this Matriarch is ALREADY READY! You get all the energy of the waterfront with a cozy, tucked-in feel once you're inside. Now, the coffee. I got a latte that was genuinely one of the better cups I've had in a long time -- smooth, rich, perfectly pulled. I also had a Chai and paired it with a cherry & cheese danish that was fresh and delicious, the ideal complement to the drink. I asked for it heated and it was hot all the way through. Hate it when I get it and it is cold in the middle...the barista understood the assignment and got us right! Everything felt thoughtful, like someone in that kitchen actually cares about what they're putting out -- because they do. Speaking of which -- I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, and it all made sense. Warm, passionate, and clearly proud of what they've built. Shirts, cups, napkins, and merch that says "I love my Matriarch" is a reminder of the "Why" behind this spot I think. That kind of energy flows through the entire space and staff. You feel it the moment you walk in. The Matriarch isn't just a coffee shop. It's a destination. If you're in Baltimore, this is a must. If you're outside the city -- make the drive. Trust me. Second time in, this time I ordered. Neat space for a coffee shop, overlooking the harbor. The service, though not prompt, was good. We were able to ask a few questions about menu items. We had the matcha latte, and a menu special: solar eclipse which was chai with expresso macadamia nut milk and lavender syrup. Matcha was good flavor and quality. The drink special I pass, I gave it a fair try but it didn't taste good- there was a very acidic taste at the end. First time trying this spot and though it was good, I was expecting to be more impressed. They have lots of specialty drinks to choose from, and I decided on a butterscotch iced latte. I was a little underwhelmed about their food options, they had a few bagels and croissants set out, but nothing amazing looking. The service was patient and kind, and we got our drinks within 5 mins. The real draw to this shop is the harbor view. I got my coffee and sat outside next to the water with a giant boat to marvel at. My iced latte was not very sweet at all, to the point that I wasn't even sure it had syrup in it. Next time I would taste the drink before heading outside to make sure there was enough sweetener in it. Other than that though, the espresso was mild and the drink was well made. Stopped in to check out the menu, and ordered a lavender chai latte. Customer service was great, and my drink was ready in no time. The small was smaller than anything I'd ever seen. I didn't even know cups came in that size ! The chai was lovely, though. read more

We came here as part of a day trip to Baltimore. The shop is set up inside what looks like a greenhouse from the outside, complete with vines hanging down from the ceiling near the outer entrance. I got the Peach ring lemonade, and my mother got a green tea, both of which came out very quickly. The peach ring was really good, not overly sweet, and honestly tasted the way the name would suggest. The high for the day we went was somewhere around 102 degrees, so the place had a sign saying they'd close early for their staff. I mention this because I like supporting businesses that care about their staff as much as their customers. read more

I loved Matriarch Coffee. I had seen the signs for it while walking around Inner Harbor, and when walking by the location, I knew I had to stop. It's cute, with great views and friendly staff. They seem to really know coffee, which is refreshing, but they also have fun drinks as well. Plus, their origin story is great. I went with the whiskey barrel-aged cold brew, which was delicious. The barista described it as strong on the coffee flavor, but you still get whiskey notes, and she was absolutely right. I'm obsessed with this coffee, which is aged in Sagamore casks. Being a fan of Sagamore, it makes sense I would love this coffee. I'm looking forward to returning and trying more on their menu. read more

A great little spot but the highlight is the coffee!! Sounds weird but many coffee places nowadays are more food oriented. They serve primarily (if not exclusively) Rwandan coffee which is not that easy to find. I always get drip coffee when wanting to really taste the flavor and I was not disappointed!! Very mellow and a fragrance that is more typical to African coffees. Medium roasted (perfect) and special that the roaster just happened to be hanging out. read more

A small shop with lots of outdoor seating right on the harbor - I was really expecting the over-priced, snooty city model of small coffee shops. Instead I was warmly greeted, had a great chat with the staff, and left with a shot of espresso and a medium latte for under $10. This stop was part of my exploration into if I want to get an espresso machine one day, so my first part of the order was a straight shot. I went with the single, but probably should have ordered a double - since most machines and grinders are tuned to that. What I got was on the sour side, but very smooth with only a hint of acidity. The Rancilo they have is a beautiful machine - and I've had Matriarch coffee before (bought at a store) so I wasn't at all surprised that the latte was delicious, without a hint of off flavors or acidity or bitterness. Absolutely worth stopping by, picking up a pound of coffee and getting a latte to go if you're in the area. read more

I've been to Matriarch for coffee a few times and have always had a delicious iced latte. The freshly ground coffee makes a difference! I love their community mission and the fact that they are black owned and trying to make a difference in Harborplace. It's the only coffee shop in the area (non DD or Sbux) and worth the walk around the harbor. The outdoor sitting area is very cute. The best things on their menu are the pastries, specifically the danishes and the everything croissants. The employees were very welcoming with smiles on their faces all 3 times I went. I have had several "amazing" experiences when I've visited Matriarch Coffee. During my first visit, I was in the mood to try out one of Matriarch's specialty drinks. The Once in a Blue caught my eye. It has Blue butterfly pea matcha, lavender, French vanilla, oat milk and a double shot of espresso. The owner, who was making my drink, said he had an extra espresso shot and didn't want it to go to waste. He asked if I wanted it at no charge. I accepted. The drink was sweeter than what I typically get but a very good "dessert" coffee. During my second visit, my brother and I stopped by on a super chilly afternoon. I went in with the intention of getting a hot drink. Their Whiskey coffee (a Friday only thing) caught my eye. I inquired about it to the owner. I told him about a place in Florida that does the same thing that I order beans from regularly. After a short conversation, he said "You know your coffee" and grabbed samples of Matriarch's house coffee, their whiskey coffee hot and their whiskey cold brew. As much as I meant to get a hot coffee, the whiskey cold brew was too good to pass up. I got that with some oat milk. My brother, who is into sweet coffee, got a butterscotch coffee. We took a hot chocolate and mocha to go (for our wives). Everyone raved about their drink. Matriarch is expensive compared to some other local Baltimore shops. I think that is to be expected. It is located right along the harbor in a tourist spot. I'd imagine the rent is not cheap. Their drinks are really well done, the owner is super friendly, the ambiance and location are top tier and it is Black Owned. I don't mind paying a bit extra for that. read more

Wonderful coffee in a beautiful place! They use house roasted beans and carefully craft their drinks to make for a great coffee experience. Their location is right on the water, so you can really enjoy a nice experience sitting outside on a nice day. Obsessed with their fall affogato and sweet baristas who can actually tell you about the menu. So don't be afraid to ask questions like I was. Haha I struggled to find the coffee shop the first time, so assuming you do too it's the green store behind the Water Taxi sign (I've added a photo) and left of 'It Sugar'. I've also seen a lot of people struggle to get in since there's so many window panels. There's a photo for visual guidance. Once inside, there's a warm, bordering on hot, sitting area, so you'll stay cozy and have a beautiful view of the Inner Harbor. The second door is to the right in front of you. It's a two panel door, so dont get frightened if it opens 'weird'. They also have free wifi posted on the board to the left of the second door and more seating. Located right on the harbor, allowing you to sip your latte and enjoy your bagel while waterfront, it's a lovely locally owned shop with the nicest crew working and delicious product. I ordered a hazelnut latte and a blueberry bagel + cream cheese. I got them to go and found a nearby bench and enjoyed the view. read more

The coffee was unremarkable, the staff had its basic politeness. The heirloom granola cookie was deliciously sweet though. Might return. What a great little coffee house in one of the pavilions at the Inner Harbor. Everything is so well done even down to the quality of the napkins. The space is small but welcoming and comfortable. The coffee is delicious. If you get lattes or cappuccinos their default milk is almond but they offer others. I haven't tried any other pastries/food besides the bagels because they are so good! I do also have my eyes on the scones though so will be trying those little homemade treats. Special shout out to the staff. What an amazing group of sweet and kind folks. This is my new stop for morning coffee and bagels when I go to my office downtown. read more

I really liked this place. After my Sunday run, it has become tradition to treat myself to a good cup of joe. I have been trying different coffee shops trying to find my home and this place was definitely a win for me. The main reason is the location. My run group leaves from rash field and this coffee shop was a few steps away. It definitely helps that the coffee is really good. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time. Now I know where it is. At first I thought it was inside Harborplace but it's in the former Irish pub lower level. I wanted to get some breakfast but when I saw the menu most of the menu items were crossed out. So I ordere my americano and surprised to see how expensive it is for a medium Americano. An americano is express with water but was shocked to see its $6 at Matriarch. I walked 30 minutes out of my way where there are 5 different coffee shops in Locust Point. It did get me out of the house on a nice day so I am happy to sip my beverage while I am on a meeting. The woman working didn't seem very happy. The coffee shop wasn't busy but a constant stream of people. She may have been having a bad day since she is working by herself. It's a nice location to drink a beverage and have a great view of the harbor. I like the Adirondack chairs outside. read more

It was a very cold Baltimore afternoon as I explored the Christmas Village. I decided to get coffee to warm up. Matriarch was a 3 minutes walk and so I went. I ordered a butterscotch latte, the friendly counter lady said $9.01(tax included). My goodness, it was sticker shock. I thought it better be a muy grandeur and delicious coffee. After a 5 minutes wait, I received a standard large cup. It tasted good, but not $9 good. It did warmed me up though. I happened to be enjoying a beautiful day in the inner harbor and stumbled upon a new coffee shop in a great sunny spot overlooking the harbor. Although not fully opened the owner was gracious enough to bless me with an iced coffee. The roast is a brand specialty, Bourbon Barrel cold brew. And it's unlike anything I've ever tasted and it's worth every penny! The coffee tastes great on its own if you're a robust coffee lover you have to give it a try.
