To start...the tart was great - and there were several other options that caught my eye that I'd certainly try again if I find myself back at Patisserie Poupon. The space itself is very tiny. There are two tables and while I sat for a while to work and another person was sitting there on a work call, it didn't feel like the space was actually meant for people to sit and enjoy. It is definitely more of a grab-and-go place, and I think maybe why people feel put off by the "welcome" they received. I stopped in yesterday to grab a quick bite, but the experience was so unpleasant I left wondering what happened to the reliability and quality this bakery used to represent. When I arrived, there was one other in-person customer, and the woman working was on the phone assisting someone with an order. I waited about ten minutes while she finished helping the phone customer and then the person ahead of me. Throughout that time, she complained loudly about being short-staffed and working alone--not in an apologetic way, but as though she were irritated that customers were there at all. It was an uncomfortable tone that lingered through the rest of my visit. When she finally looked up and asked how she could help me, I stepped forward to order. But before I could even finish, she said, "You'll have to wait, I need to do this online order first," and proceeded to fulfill multiple online orders. It was confusing--why ask me to step up only to dismiss my order entirely? Once she was ready again, I repeated my order and asked if they were serving coffee. She said yes, though there was no visible menu or indication of what they offered. When I asked what kind, she replied, "We just have simple coffee here." I wasn't sure what that meant, especially given the espresso machine behind her. I asked if I could get a latte; she said nothing, began making it, and then started complaining out loud that she was "too nice" and shouldn't have agreed to make coffee because others were waiting. It might have been laughable if it hadn't been so uncomfortable. She had been short and unwelcoming from the start, and to hear her describe herself as "too nice" while actively complaining about customers was surreal. Even the young girl helping ring up orders--who couldn't have been more than 12--apologized for her behavior, which says a lot about how awkward the atmosphere had become. When I finally got my latte, I asked about my food since it hadn't appeared. She checked and realized she had completely forgotten it--it had been sitting there the whole time. Still no apology, no acknowledgment. Unfortunately, the food didn't redeem the experience. The cookie was stale, and the royale pastry, which looked beautiful, tasted strongly of the refrigerator it came from. For a bakery known for its exceptional French pastries, that was a real disappointment. I've gone to Patisserie Poupon for years (and originally to the cafe before it closed), but this visit was so off-putting that I doubt I'll return. Everyone has off days, but there's no excuse for open hostility toward customers--or walk away regretting they stopped in at all. To be frank I am not normally a fan of cheesecake. I purchased one from this bakery because a coworker who was leaving loves it, especially ones with mixed fruits like at Pâtisserie Poupon. I've witnessed bakers taking food/ with their bare hands no gloves from one location next door which seems to be an apartment, that have a built in kitchen. To the restaurant Approximately around 7:08pm this baker took the desserts he cut up and walked next door and put them in a fridge. No gloves, in sight. I have never in my life seen such cooking behaviors, high levels of un sanitation, in my life. As a long-time customer of this patisserie, I have experienced a range of highs and lows that make it a bit of a mixed bag. The cakes are consistently amazing! I love Royale, Cassis Mousse, and Opera. When it comes to pastries, it's hit or miss. When fresh out of the oven the spinach ricotta croissant, ham cheese croissant, and pain au chocolat are wonderfully delicious. However, there have been times when they were stale or old (right when they open in the morning!), which is disappointing. Given the steep prices, I expect a higher standard of freshness and quality. The customer service needs improvement. Many times I've encountered unfriendly or even rude staff. Smh. Another aspect to keep in mind is the location. The area around the patisserie doesn't feel very safe, so it's wise to be mindful when visiting. I really enjoy pastry shops and am a bit of a francophile, so I was very excited that Patisserie Poupon was within walking distance of my hotel. Unfortunately, the closer you get to the shop, the sketchier the area. Luckily I was walking with two others and it was broad daylight, but otherwise I might have turned back and Ubered instead. The shop itself it very modest and if you didn't know it was there you could walk right past. Inside they have displays with cakes and their pastry items available for individual purchase, of which there were probably two dozen or more options. I got several items - opera, pistachio eclair, chocolate chip walnut cookie, Madeline, almond croissant, and pain au chocolat. My favorite item was the opera by far - super creamy with sweetness balanced by the bitter coffee cream. I am not a coffee lover, but really enjoyed this dessert. The rest of the items I honestly could've done without and have had better versions of elsewhere. I tried them all, but didn't finish them all. I think the shop is worth a pop-by if you're visiting but I am not sure I'd return if I lived in the area personally. read more

Upon a local recommendation I decided to order a birthday cake to brighten up my baby's day as she graduating and is reluctant to celebrate and I'm almost 3000 miles away. First, the delivery driver went above and beyond to make sure this cake was sent to my daughter's college dorm room, despite the security desk being a total pain about it, and not caring one way or another. Over the last fifteen years, I have bought pastries from Patisserie Poupon every few weeks. The red and the black is a particular favorite of mine. I also enjoy their brioche and the lemon tart. I went in this afternoon for the first time since March. The pastry cases were dirty, two of the employees were arguing, and the customer in front of me kept getting cut off by the employee behind the desk because if the phone rang, the employee would immediately cut the customer off and turn away from us to take a call in the corner. It was odd but life is difficult sometimes. However, it got worse (for me). I asked if coffees could still be made and was told by the employee that even asking "raised her blood pressure." Then, I offered to wait until she served the other customers behind me. I had ten minutes, I can wait for her to clear out the line. Instead, she yelled at me that if "you don't care about other people at all, then neither do I. I'll hold up everyone here and just make you a latte. you don't care about other people." It was quite cruel, I thought--and abusive, over a coffee order. I immediately told her I had no interest in any coffee she might make and to please just let me buy my pastries. The employee continued slamming things around by the coffee machine and exclaiming how she would hold up the whole line because of me. I wish I had just left and not even bought the pastries. Instead, I just insisted again and again that she please stop and just let me buy my brioche and leave. Eventually, she stopped and relented. I will never come back to Patisserie Poupon or buy another of their products. I honestly just can't believe this happened--over an order for a latte. read more

All of the cookies, croissants, danish, and rolls I tried were amazing but without a doubt the star of the show for me was the Kougin Amman. It was perfectly flaky with a coating of glazed caramel and is what the phrase "party in your mouth" is coined for. As a stray cat, I don't eat fancy foods often but every once in a while I indulge myself with some of the best desserts that Baltimore has to offer! They have a wide variety of cakes to satisfy almost any palate. One noticeable thing about their desserts are that they not cloyingly sweet like many other dessert shops in Baltimore (I'm looking at you, Sacre Sucre! *meow*). At Patisserie Poupon, you can actually taste the cocoa, creme, and fruit. The sugar is used sensibly to highlight these flavors rather than to overpower them. The only downside to Patisserie Poupon is that their prices are on the higher side (~$6 per cake), but I do think that they are still worth every penny! Today I picked up a lovely bûche de Noël from Patisserie Poupon: this is where Cafe Poupon gets its pastries and bread each day. I am not a Christmas fan, like at all. But I am a fan of tasty cake that looks cool. Which is what this is. I pre-ordered the grand marnier version. The cool part is the decorations: mushrooms and worms, and other little things you'd find on a log... but in candy form, of course! And it had the great orange-y taste I was looking for: very happy with my purchase. Oh, I also ordered 6 madeleines just because. Perhaps I will dig into those this weekend. Pickup was easy. I was disappointed! The croissant, the kouign amann, and the chocolate brioche were all stale! They should be flacky and crispy and fluffy inside but they weren't at all. I purchased them around 9am, even though that shouldn't matter. But it's a bakery and I would assume things are fresher in the morning. This seemed like it was made a few days ago. I took one bite of each and I would say it tasted better then the supermarket bought ones in its ingredients. But definitely not worth it. I don't know of I went at a bad time, but I don't see any excuse for it. As for the piece of cake, I purchased that for someone else so I didn't not try it. I can't speak towards that. I hope it's not as bad as the others things. It looked pretty good, but I can't really rate it's taste. I don't think I will be coming back here so not sure I would get to taste it either. read more

This place is solid and rivals the quality of baking at any other patisserie in a major city. It won't necessarily be "the best" you've ever had but it'll hit that croissant craving, and for me, my love for canelés. They have the days pastries out on display in the window French style and the croissant dough is wonderfully flaky. The canelés have the characteristic chewy, caramelized exterior and soft, moist interior. I would have liked it a tad softer to the point of suspiciously under baked personally but By all means it's done well (I like extreme textual contrasts with my patisseries.) I apologize to anyone else who might have wanted canelés after 9am today knowing it's incredibly hard to find this niche pastry in the DMV. Despite how delicate the pastries are the ham and cheese croissant is a surprisingly solid breakfast option. Two points of constructive criticism: that the glaze on the pain aux raisins was a little too you know so it's not as delicate and savory as one you would get in France also the crust on the baguette isn't crusty enough (watch ratatouille and you'll know what I mean.) Really, REALLY disappointed. If you are into croissants lacking the proper balance, and are okay with 'one' layer 'bricks' then have a go. So far this place doesn't even come close to the daily comestibles I used to partake of from the Bakkerij Brandsma in Utrecht, NL. After a somewhat disappointing lunch, we decided to stop at Patisserie Poupon in hopes of a better dessert. It was indeed a wise decision. This quaint little French bakery is absolutely delicious! We got the Royale, the Paris Brest, and the strawberry pistachio cake. The Royale was a rich, luxuriant chocolate mousse draped over some crunchy nuts and a soft sponge bottom layer. The little chocolate macaron on top was excellently made as well. The Paris Brest had the classic hazelnut cream that melted perfectly into the choux pastry. The strawberry pistachio was rich with pistachio flavors and wonderfully moist. In addition, nothing here was overly sweet like most American desserts. A must try in the Baltimore area! read more

My oldest daughter ordered a cake from this French bakery for a little family lunch. I am not sure what the official name was, but it had almond, coffee, and mocha flavoring. I should have known better than getting the danish. I normally don't really like danish...and I still don't after this place. I ended up getting the cheese danish. The exterior was soggy and mushy, with too much of the glaze on it. Maybe it's a personal preference, but I prefer the danish to have a flaky and light consistency. This just didn't cut it. The macarons are decent. They're crisp on the outside and chewy and light on the inside. I really liked the passion fruit one. I thought the black current could have had a bit more umph to it. $0.85 macarons are a steal! I agree with some of the other reviews that the server was a bit rude and curt. I kept trying to make jokes and be friendly as I asked her if she had suggestions, but she was cold and seemed like she just wanted to get rid of me. After our second time through watching the Great British Baking Show, my husband and I decided to seek out some patisseries to get our paws on some of the baked goods we have seen on the show, but haven't been able to try. So far, Parisserie Poupon has been our favorite. The service was friendly enough and the atmosphere was a little lacking, but that is not why we were there, we were there for the goods. We got a Frasier (Light genoise cake with fresh strawberries, Kirsch and Mousseline), Royale (Layers of chocolate mousse, chocolate meringue, and crunchy hazelnut and white chocolate) and the third I cannot remember the name of but it was passion fruit and chocolate. All of them were incredible and for once we agreed on the rankings of our favorites: passion fruit and chocolate, then the frasier and then the royale. We rarely see a dessert with passion fruit (which they use all the time on the show) and we loved the tang with the chocolate. The frasier was just delicious and reminded us of a fancy and more delicious strawberry shortcake. The royale was also great, but so are a lot of other chocolate desserts.
