Well this is an amazing neighborhood where over 300 houses get together and decorate for this holiday event. They even supply a map of the best route to take to be able to see everything. It runs from Thanksgiving night until New Years Day. The event is free but there's spots along the route to make donations. Each year they give the donations to a different organization. The Margery Gallogly Nature Sanctuary is 145 acres of private forest that, instead of being…read moredeveloped, has been acquired by the Western New York Land Conservancy and is now open to the public. There is a loop trail and a spur, which together added to a little more than 1.5 miles long. Some of the trail is on a raised boardwalk because the area can be wet and the trail is not open to dogs. Signage does say that snowshoes and cross-country skiing are permitted. The forest is lovely, especially now with the autumn colors taking over. Although it was dry when I visited, a nice big frog greeted me along the path and reminded me that the area is a wetland area. There were a few families with young children visiting. Other than negotiating the boardwalk, it is an nice easy hike for kids. The nature sanctuary is easy to reach. The trailhead is in the back corner of Assumption Cemetery and there is a small parking lot for visitors.

This was a new experience for us and so much fun!…read more American Legion Halls always give me a warm feeling that includes early memories of my childhood and my Dad. He was always so proud of being a member. This particular hall is large and very clean, including the rest rooms. The bar for this event was serving free beer and pop. You could purchase mixed drinks for a nominal fee. The bartender was quick and friendly. The setup worked well for the meat raffle. The space can also be used/rented for other large gatherings. I appreciated that I could choose how much I wanted, both to eat and to pay. Signing up to volunteer was easy through the online portal and I could tell that I was helping with what needed to get done. The location is accessible - by bike, car, walking, and bus (route 3, Grant) - and the inside is warm and welcoming. Will definitely come back when I am free for lunch during the week!

This also means I got to ride the awesome Dizzy Dragons ride, which is similar to Disney world tea cups. Food was okay. Basic pizza at &3 per slice was fair. Treat prices were high to me, though. $5 cotton candy or $3 for 3 chocolate covered strawberries seemed like a lot. We headed out around 7:30 as rain started to sprinkle and big crowds of teenagers arrived. Overall, a nice time.

I first found out about the Massachusetts Avenue Project when I was looking for place near me to…read moredrop off kitchen compost. MAP is one of the drop-off locations for the City of Buffalo's residential food scrap collection program. If you'd like to participate, you can bring your scraps any time and look for the orange bins on the outer side of the fence. But MAP is more than just a place to drop off compost. It's an urban farm on the West Side that provides job and leadership training for low income youth. It also hosts cooking classes and gardening workshops, and a seasonal farm stand. You can also rent space in their farmhouse and/or commercial kitchen as well. I believe you can contact the org to request a tour of the farm (suggested donation $5), though I got a chance to see the grounds and go inside the farmhouse during MAP's annual seedling sale, where they also had outside vendors. Even though we didn't buy any seedlings (my recent track record with plants is not so great), it was still a fun visit. My three-year-old was interested in MAP's resident chickens, the demonstration beehive, and in the baby cows that were visiting the farm that day. We also purchased some food from one of the outside vendors, and some honey made by MAP's own bees. I'd definitely recommend being on the lookout for other MAP events if you're interested in locally grown food or edible gardening.
