We were…read moreable to tour both Fendi's corporate headquarters in EUR and their flagship store near the Spanish Steps. Fendi is an Italian luxury fashion house producing fur, ready-to-wear clothing, leather goods, shoes, fragrances, eyewear, timepieces and accessories. Founded in 1925 in Rome, Fendi is renowned for its fur and fur accessories. In 2015, the fashion house moved its headquarters into the Palazzo della Civilta Italiana, a six-floor geometric edifice of symmetrical arches nicknamed, "The Square Colosseum." The 75-year-old building was never occupied prior to Fendi's arrival! We were given a great tour by Giulia, Worldwide Private Client Relations Manager. She showed us their movie studio, plush theater, employee café, and a special exhibit of Fendi clothing and accessories used in the movies. Speaking of movies, Fendi shows a different movie each night at 9 pm, and the public is invited to come free of charge. Not a bad deal! We concluded our tour with her on the rooftop, which offered spectacular, panoramic views. After leaving Fendi headquarters, we went downtown to the Palazzo Fendi - the company's flagship store near the Spanish Steps, where we were met by Rim, Fendi's Fur Atelier (fur workshop) Ambassador. She told us that she had been with Fendi for 20 years; and, it was clear she really enjoyed her job! Walking us through the various rooms of the Palazzo, she showed us how everything in each room compliments the rest of the items in the room - from furniture to clothes to wall decorations to handbags to fur garments. It was downright impressive! (And, unless she had explained all that, we would have been clueless!) On the second floor of their store is a room where several employees make fur coats and accessories. (The main fur production operation is at their headquarters in EUR.) Obviously, they have this small operation downtown to show important clients how the work is done. We marveled at the steps they took to make something like a fur coat. After viewing the shop, we were taken upstairs to the Fendi Private Suites: a hotel with 7 individualized suites. You can now not only shop at Fendi's flagship boutique in Rome, but stay there. The third floor of the Maison's stunning home, Palazzo Fendi, has been transformed into the world's very first Fendi hotel. This sumptuous palazzo originally belonged to the noble Boncompagni Ludovisi family and sits at the foot of the Via Condotti. Elfriede, the Fendi Private Suites Guest Relations Manager (who has worked for Fendi for 26 years), showed us one of the suites - the honeymoon suite, which was prepared for the arrival of a pair of newlyweds. They had arranged rose petals on the bedspread in the shape of a heart (with a box of chocolates in the middle), as well as a trail of rose petals from the door to the bed. On the top floor - above the private suites - is a Zuma restaurant, which is part of a world-wide chain of very high-end, Japanese restaurants. This one boasts a rooftop cocktail and dining area with wonderful views of Rome. We were thrilled with our tour of Fendi!

And if you are a fashion fiend or Fendi lover, you might want to go sightseeing first, as you'll likely spend half a day here like I did. While it is often overshadowed by Milan, Rome has also played a huge role in the fashion world as the birthplace of Italian Couture, with most of the credit owed to Valentino, who opened his first store in Rome, and another popular name in high-end fashion: Fendi. If you're not familiar with the name, maybe a quick flip through some Google images will help you remember the popular logo you've probably seen numerous times during the course of your lifetime. Like Gucci and Louis Vuitton, Fendi's FF Zucca print could be seen on many credit card swiping victims of high fashion and those with steep wallets especially in the 90s and early 00s. With it celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, I read sometime ago that it will be moving to one of Rome's most striking and grand buildings, the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana.

It's a total mix! Prices are good, more than reasonable actually and if you look closely, you can find some designer pieces. I do have to say, the clothes are in good condition - but it's not the best-of-the-best. Friendly service, soooooo many items to choose from and I fell in love with the 1940s leather suitcase. They're not opposed to bargaining and in the end, I managed quite a good deal for the suitcase, but it was still over my budget. Ah well, at least I tried and the service was super friendly. With a little "Doh!" [instert Homer Simpson voice]" I continued my quest, but definitely recommend this shop for a visit! Who knows what you'll find?!

I love vintage shopping and have a large wardrobe of collector's items. The day before we were in Antichita' Carnovale and spent over $2,000.00 dollars on bags. I was so excited to visit Abiti Usati because I had such a wonderful experience at the other shop the day before. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a lovely older woman and we looked around a bit but wanted to see what else we could find. Next door was an extension of the shop and the owner refused to let us in. He said they were the same things and would allow us to enter and turned us away for no reason. I have never felt so awful and below someone in my entire life. I love Italy having lived here twice. I also love Rome and have bragged how wonderful the people are. The owner made me cry and ruined that moment on my last day of this trip. I would love to tell him just how awful he made me feel and the business he turned away as we were looking to purchase 7 leather jackets, a luxury piece of luggage, and a fur. Would not recommend to anyone because regardless of your opinion of Americans, we were treated like second class citizens, and being a good person is part of running a respectable business.

LSS, my first in-person experience with Sermoneta where someone - I'm not going to identify the culprit - insisted on buying me two pairs of the softest, most beautiful gloves that you've ever seen. Last year, in a sartorial tragedy, I lost a pair of Sermoneta gloves (first pair of gloves that I've ever lost in my life, including as a child, and they had to be Sermoneta...). A pox on the person at the Toronto resto who said that they didn't find them! The most obvious way to heal my wound was to go to Sermoneta in its country of origin. This outpost is a two-level store on the Piazza di Spagna. Wonderful service; the woman who helped me has been working at the same store for 25 years. This is not a place for bargain hunters. On the upside, you can zip across the piazza to the Global Blu Vat refund centre. Hint: when they ask you if you want a beverage say yes, because they take a significant commission (larger than what the woman told me it would be). There is an additional charge if you want your refund in cash (because they can claw back the refund on your credit card, but not if you walk out the door with money in hand). Have to go work now to save up for the next trip to Sermoneta!

We passed by it a couple of times just while walking around Rome and decided to peek in for a quick browse. The store was huge, in a palatial building called, appropriately enough, Palazzo Fendi. The interior was modern and opulent, designed and decorated to the max, two wide floors connected by a statement red marble staircase. I enjoyed looking around, shadowed by a sales associate who was either there to help me shop or deter me from shoplifting, I honestly couldn't tell which. The clothes were beautiful and extravagant, and there were more ludicrously expensive exotic bags than I'd ever seen in one place. Rows of Fendi purses in ostrich and snakeskin and crocodile, a dream haul for a smash and grab crew. Lucky for my shadow, I was only there to gawk. Palazzo Fendi is centrally located, right by the Spanish Steps, and it's a fun stop if you like looking at pretty things. As a bonus, they also have a bathroom, and no one will follow you in there.
