This is my first experience at this office and I would definitely recommend them! Pema and her team are very professional and welcoming. The office is clean and there's street parking right outside. I started to have shoulder pain recently and the place I've gone to for acupuncture was fully booked. I don't mind paying out of pocket especially for something that can help with pain and be beneficial to my health. I had the pleasure of running into Dr. Pema during a community fair and decided to check out her practice which was conveniently located in the heart of downtown Englewood, next to a Irish pub I frequent. My lower back pain had flared up again after an intense week-long trip to museums in DC. The experience can be summed up in two words - No nonsense. From the staff booking my appointment to the bright and simple interior to her initial consultation & the next day follow up call, every move was purposeful and focused. Also, she seemed different from other acupuncturists in that she engaged and invited the patient into the treatment process by giving brief overview of the treatment beforehand and asking questions to gauge your appetite for explanations during the treatment. It was like customizing the patient experience instead of just assuming that the patient would not be interested and just going through it in silence. I happen to want to know what's being done to me and ask several questions, so this proactive approach worked for me. If you're the quiet type, just tell her so and she'll leave you alone I'm sure. She also introduced the next steps way ahead of the time, like when she told me even before she began needling that Mr. Jose would come in after acupuncture to give me a certain type of massage treatment. Treatment was quick and informative. It was my first time getting needled on the head and ear and having acupuncture points' names said out loud for me. She has an interesting background so we also chatted about things during treatment and I enjoyed the conversation while she stayed focused and polite throughout. After 25 minutes lying down, she came in to remove the needles and jokingly explained that she took all needles out so to not worry about Mr. Jose massaging needles into my body. Jose came in as she had said, and gave me a great tension-relieving massage using kneading & stretching strokes on my lower back and shoulder/neck area. I thought he used a smooth rock but welp, that was his trained hands. Really firm & thorough. He asked if the pressure was okay. I assume for some esp. ladies, you might ask him to tone it down. I did not get cupping this time, but I figure they didn't think I needed it. My visit lasted about 90 minutes including debriefing after, and my back pain had greatly subsided and I could move more freely. Pema anticipates questions and concerns ahead of the time and articulates it effectively which is a real value to patients who often would not know what to expect. While a bit pricier than what I am used to, I think time will tell. She offers package discounts so that's something to look into since you've gotta go a few times to really know your acupuncturist.
