I loved this place! The cake itself was amazing. A vanilla cake topped with fresh delicious strawberries was just the best I had in a very long time. The workers here were very friendly and gave me pointers as to care for the cake since I had a bit of a drive. Helpful! I don't know why it took me this long to write a review about this place, but here it goes...A small lil bakery in south salinas which is hidden in a plaza. This place has some weird hours, so you have to be familiar with the fact that its closed on sunday and mondays and closes early on tuesdays. The pastries offered are pretty legit! I love love the chocolate almond croissant and the chocolate ganache, which is sometimes available by the slice. You can actually request a slice and have it ready for you the next day..thats some great service!!! and better yet, the slice is super cheap. The only downfall to this place is the fact you have to come in super early in order to get the great selection of pastries. Alternatively you can call ahead of time and place what you would like on hold and pick it up before they close. Remember to bring cash or a check..they do not accept credit cards. This bakery is DELIGHTFUL! Although it's in a strip mall and not so appealing, their cakes and cookies are very delicious. I have yet to buy their muffins and breads. I managed to eat a slice of praline cake while i was there and it was yummy! They made a cake for a wedding I attended and it was fresh and absolutely delicious! I'm a patisserie snob...but they are so affordable that I just wanted to buy everything on the shelf! This is the best small town pastry shop we have experienced outside of France! Get there early to have a fresh chocolate croissant-the closest we've had to the ones in France. Everything here is amazing- don't be fooled by the look of things, try it all, even the brightly frosted sugar cookies which are usually unappealing to me have the most delicious crumble and flavor! Some of my favorites include the chocolate chip cookie, chocolate/vanilla raspberry muffin, and pecan pumpkin bread! The owners are French and so sweet. The only bummer is that in true French fashion they take nice long vacations about twice a year (good for them but terrible for my pastry addiction). read more

They're my first choice for holiday pies but know you'll be standing outside in the cold, in a slow-moving line of at least 10 people, this even before COVID! Only one person works the counter during the busiest time of year even when two are on site. They deserve 5 stars but for the curt, unfriendly service of the two women there. Does customer service mean nothing because every last pastry sells out anyway?? Last Christmas after 50 minutes of standing in line, I mustered the nerve to ask, "Why are you talking to me this way?" Peninsula Pastries catered the dessert table for our wedding and we were extremely pleased with their pastries and their service! We order several cakes and tarts, as well as a 2-layer cake for the event and everything was gone within an hour! Everybody raved about the dessert and not only was it all beautiful, but it was also delicious. They were extremely reasonable when compared with other bakeries (a quarter of the price of a large wedding cake from most bakeries in Carmel/Monterey) and the quality was excellent. This place gets rave reviews from a bunch of people, but in our experience the croissants weren't very tasty or buttery, the danishes were too dense, and overall the food just wasn't amazing. It wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't go there for "breakfast items". Maybe their cookies or cakes are better, but we didn't try any of those. There are places in Monterey that are much better. And I live in Salinas and was very much hoping to find a go-to French bakery. read more

Really good pricing on wedding cakes, but they no longer deliver and they only offered two flavors. The woman helping us was nice, but she didn't seem interested in taking our order. She stated we had to pick up the cake the day of the wedding and it couldn't be transported very far. Thankfully we were able to find another bakery that was completely fine with having us pick up a cake the day before and would package it so it could easily be transported in a vehicle. Peninsula Pastries is a total gem! Yes, the hours are limited and the pastries sell out quickly, but it's worth the heartache. The shop is very clean - no frills - and the service is always very attentive and polite. They package everything really well, which is wonderful. They don't try to jam everything into one bag or box. The prices are really reasonable as well, and they are extremely consistent in the quality and presentation of their desserts. My recommendations: -Praline cake (I don't go for pralines or white cake, but this is fantastic) -Fruit tart -Peach turnover -Blackberry and cream cheese danish (my dad's top choice) -The croissants! (especially their mini varieties) -Pumpkin pie (which you can pick up before Thanksgiving) -My absolute favorite, the raspberry chocolate truffle cake! This is a great whole cake to order for a special occasion - layers of chocolate cake, chocolate mouse with real, whole raspberries, and decadent ganache. I've really never had anything bad here. I even ate a bran muffin here that was tasty. My friend had her engagement party, bridal shower, and wedding desserts catered here, and it was great! They made beautiful miniature desserts (creme puffs, tarts, eclairs) and a lovely variety of whole cakes. I ended up picking up the miniature desserts for her shower. I should probably give this place fewer stars because they have the weirdest, most unpredictable hours and they always sell out of their best items, but you know what? Those issues are of little concern to me. I will eat anything this bakery concocts. Of course, the cakes and pies and cookies are delicious. That goes without saying. But the real treasures are the things you might not ordinarily try at a bakery. The owners (who are very sweet, pun intended) have perfected their recipe for coffee cake, and I insist that you try it. I'm not even sure if it's coffee cake, but that's the closest thing I can compare it to. It's this incredible brown-and-white swirl cake (totally legitimate to eat for breakfast, obviously) with either raspberry or apricot preserves mixed in and white icing drizzled on top. And the breads. Doesn't matter which one you get--zucchini, pumpkin, banana, fruit and nut--you will go back for more. I mean that, too--the prices are really reasonable, so you'll have to rework your budget to accommodate trips to Peninsula Pastries. read more

This place is THE BEST. Their sugar cookies are sweetly delightful and crisp. Their chocolate chip cookies are huge and slightly chewy with crisp edges. The chocolate chewies are flourless, dense, chocolaty, rich, and there are some tiny peanut(?) bits inside, with a crisp exterior. The lemon raspberry cake is good. The cheesecakes are PHENOMENAL fluffy ounces of heaven in your mouth. Orgasmic. Sinful. Seriously.... The chocolate truffle cake is good (I get it almost every time). I'm also obsessed with any of their tarts. They have a sugar cookie crust, sweet homemade cream, and fresh fruit. Also heavenly so try one. (Cheap at $3). My birthday tradition is to order the "fraiser" aka strawberry and white cake. It's very creamy. The bread pudding is always a hit- go early to get some. The eclairs are DELCIOUS. I've eaten anything and everything this place has to offer, but the above-mentioned will leave you wanting more!!!! (Too bad they're on vacation as I write this. But they deserve it.) The bakery store has been there for years (about 20 years), but Cloren and her husband David dominated about 8ish years ago... I've been going here before Cloren and I remain a customer because of Cloren! They know and love their customers. I ordered my wedding cake from here. They are helpful, professional and friendly. I had one of their ginger snaps and I was obsessed with getting my hands on another one for like two weeks. When I finally decided to indulge this obsession I had to go 4 times just to get one! The first time they were closed already because I went right before closing. Don't do that. They close as soon as they sell out, which is usually earlier than the posted time. The second time I came at 2pm and they were sold out of ginger snaps already. The third time I came at 11am and they were also sold out. Finally, on the 4th of July I leaped out of bed and sped there at 9 am to ensure ginger snap availability. They had a whole tray! I bought extras a froze a few to consume at a later date. This place is incredible. The quality is wonderful. The owners take pride in their craft and work to maintain a very high standard. The fact that they frequently sell out so early speaks for itself. This is a neighborhood gem and I highly suggest stopping in here next time you come to Salinas. They may not always have exactly what you are looking for but they will still have something yummy for you to try. They also take orders so if there is something you really need just be sure to place an order ahead of time. Hm... Now I'm hungry. EDIT: I've been informed that you can just call the and ask them to set aside something for you, even if it is just 1 gingersnap. I will be doing that from now on. read more

Local Yelpers didn't let me down! This bakery is so unassuming and very, very affordable. Everything in the case looks and smells wonderful. I bought a few pastries to bring to a friends for tea and she and her kids enjoyed them very much. Yes, the hours are a little inconvenient, but it's probably a good thing for my waistline. (Though I really wanted to come in today and was disappointed to find that it was closed Mondays!) I may come back here to get a graduation cake for my sister. Everyone who does order from them seems very happy with the results and it's considerably more inexpensive than buying a cake from Whole Foods, Layers or Parker Lusseau in Monterey. Added benefit in that it's a bit closer and I find myself in Salinas much more often. :) read more

If you are looking for a special cake for an event or celebration, this place is it if you don't want it too sweet. They are authentic french bakers, their cakes are light with very rich chocolates, they don't overpower with sugar, they let the pastry be the star. Call ahead if you need a fruit tart or cake to be sure they're not out of stock. They make the best in Salinas and are worth the money. Took the pear tart to a friend's house. This friend is a fast food junkie and even the kids were asking for more. Nice crust, marzipan/cream & pears glazed on top..awesome! I purchased my mom's 70th birthday cake from here, white cake with raspberry filling and butter cream, the butter cream was so light and not cloyingly sweet, the cake light almost angel food cake style and the raspberry filling fresh and very flavorful. They aren't open on Sundays, but it's worth the Saturday pick up for a Sunday event. Just got their chocolate ganache cake for my mom's most recent bday and I wasn't disappointed. They made a cake for my birthday party to serve 30 people. We chose the chocolate truffle cake. It was absolutely delicious and everybody loved it. It cost $35 for a 1/4 sheet--the woman who took my order told me it would be plenty and she was right! We even had some left over.
