Let me start by saying this is probably the first review I've ever written. Horrible customer service. As soon as me and my wife walked in the door, the man at the counter was very unprofessional and demeaning. My wife's parents brought in her childhood dog to get an exam and potentially to be put to sleep. So we wanted to say goodbye before she was put to sleep. The man at the counter laughed in my wife's face multiple times as she was asking question then proceeded to raise his voice as the conversation went on. My wife, in tears, the entire time. This was so unprofessional that we pulled the dog from the service. The manager came out and tried to rectify the situation but the receptionist continued to laugh, even as the manager was trying to make right of the situation. I would never EVER recommend someone spend their last moments with their beloved dog here. It must be a very hostile work environment for the receptionist to talk to people this way. Please take your furry family members elsewhere, somewhere loving and caring. Not demeaning and disrespectful. I feel bad for the receptionist, as he probably has a miserable life. read more

Nothing would help this place! They treated us terribly. I guess the dude at the desk thought we had abused our dogs(?) This couldn't have been further from the truth. Our one dog was sick for eight years and had been going there for years. Our other dog had what we thought was a hot spot that we'd been treating with shampoo and hot spot spray.The night before our 2nd dog (14) had splayed out refusing to get up. I was devastated and called to possibly put both dogs down.( I wanted to prepare our family for the worst case scenario) I wasn't sure what was happening as I'm NOT a vet! I told "sweet Linda" at the front desk my two grown children and husband would be coming into the office during my hysterical call. While there... The male receptionist burst into exam room stating that there were too many people there. My daughter and her husband had come to be with us during this difficult time. There wasn't anyone else there. I ignored his blatant ignorance, however he continued his highly emotional unprofessional behavior with me and my daughter. She had asked a question about proceedings. My daughter's husband and myself demanded that the tech calm down and not speak to us in such a manner! I asked his to calm his tone with me twice and he proceeded to wave the " sign for euthanasia" in my face demanding I make a decision on what's happening. It was ALL very confusing. My daughter through her tears asked twice if we could take our dogs somewhere else. When the vet ( Dr. Michelle) came out of exam room the tech was still directing his attention towards me and laughing. I told him that he shouldn't be laughing as none of this was funny! Dr. Michelle may have apologized to my daughter, I don't know. Another guy had come out to desk prior to vet joining the fray and tried to diffuse the situation. I demanded my dogs be released and that we were done and leaving. Dr. Michelle might know animal medicine but has shown time and time again that she lacks the care and compassion that it takes to deal with people especially in this dyer situation. We did leave. We did seek another consultation with a Vet Clinic down the street. They treated us with dignity and care while we said goodbye to our sweet Girl! The tech and The Veterinary Dr. explained everything and we were all five aloud to hold our girl and comfort her.I will never set foot in Pennell Clinic again and will never give them another dime of my money. It was a nightmare that could've been avoided if those in charge had more than a drop of compassion within them. read more

told me my dog needed surgery and when got second opinion I was told you can't tell from an x ray. They ripped me off with x ray and almost ripped me off with surgery. My dog rested and was fine without surgery. read more

Dr. Syken and Dr. Michelle are both great. I have been taking my dogs here for over 15 years. We got Chase a little over 15 years ago and this was his first and only vet. About 4 years ago we got a Boston Terrier (Loki) and a year and a half ago another pug (Axel). Chase passed about two years ago. All three dogs have gone to Pennell Vet and get the best care from Dr. Syken and Dr. Michelle. I can't imagine taking my pups anywhere else. The front desk staff is great and love seeing the dogs as they come in. Thanks for all you have done and will continue to do for my best buds. read more

I started taking my dogs to Pennell after my long time vet passed away and the care at that facility slipped. I found Dr Michele to be an amazing diagnostician. My foxhound rescue had a horrible cough that multiple vets (from various facilities) couldn't figure out. Within a few minutes of entering the room Dr Michele found he had a heart murmur due to DCM. FINIALLY we were able to treat Leo appropriately! I had another dog, an English Pointer, who started having seizures. Dr Michele quickly and correctly diagnosed him w/a brain tumor. Although Dr Michele has been very caring and empathetic, I'm not so very interested in a great bed-side manner. Proper diagnostics and care are far more important to me! I've read that some people complain about the aesthetics of the waiting room.... it's not fancy, but is that really important??? I don't understand all the poor reviews of Pennell Vet on Yelp. I have been taking my dog, a female German Shepherd, to Dr. Syken for 4 and a half years now. During that time my dog has received nothing but competent, compassionate care from the entire staff of Pennell Vet. Dr. Syken has cared for my dogs for over 12+ years. Before finding Pennell, I tried several clinics - all of which were closer to my home - but none of whom were a good fit for my pets. I like Dr. Syken because he tells it like it is - he is honest and forthright. But, Dr. Syken is also understanding of a person's financial situation. For example, my 12-YO dachshund was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Aware I am retired and on a fixed income, Dr. Syken prescribed medications that fit within my budget. Plus, I cannot speak highly enough about the office staff (Fran and Linda) and Bill, the veterinary tech assistant. As long as I have dogs, Dr Syken will be my vet and I am proud to refer Pennell Vets. read more

I have been taking my pets to Dr.Syken for 20 years...he is very reasonable in price and doesn't hold back, gives you his best opinion. He has never steered us wrong and our pets have had some challenges. Dr.Michelle is not my favorite but her care has been good. read more

This office is so gross! There is animal hair all over everything, including the chairs you sit in that are in the "Patient" rooms .... sooooo disgusting! The last time we brought our dog here the doc stuck him with a needle and somehow she let it go! Our poor dog yelped as the needle was dangling and blood was trickling down our dogs back! My son had to actually leave the room, it was a traumatic experience that he still talks about to this day! read more

Dr. Syken is a complete head case. He took and tortured our dog because his staff member did not have control of her. We were dropping her off to have ligament surgery and what he did was reprehensible. He put a plastic zip tie in our dog leg, I saw this with my own eyes on the x-ray only after 3 months of telling my wife I we were not doing enough to rehabilitate the leg. It was after that period that the x ray was taken and Dr. Syken then told us it was cancer. It was happening all too quick, and when we agreed to put her down, he did it in the most inhumane way, he pushed all of the drug to euthanize her at once. IT was cruel. Could not agree more with negative reports. Dr. Syken comes into the room and doesn't even acknowledge the pet owner. He misdiagnosed my dog's eye problem, resulting in him losing it when he finally referred me yo a specialty hospital after 8 months of wrong treatment. The staff are great, but Dr. Syken needs to retire. So uncompassionate. Also his colleague can't diagnose either. Thankfully I found a wonderful specialty hospital that took care of my little guy! read more

I am convinced that most of the positive reviews here were made by Pennell. Let me take you back to this time last year. My gf cat started having accidents outside the litter box, so after a recommendation we decided to take him to Pennell. After the first visit we were told it could just be a worm and to give him medicine that they prescribed. That didn't help so we took him back then it was "well let's test for worms". Then on the follow up it was constipation and they wanted to see him again in a week. After the third visit is when I lost it we ask multiple times for them to draw blood and they refused, so we took him to the cat hospital in media. Wonderful service. immediately they told us it was possibly kidney disease, and guess what. It was. Something that should have been found out a year ago with a few test that we were more then willing to pay for. Let's just hope its not to late for our cat. Honestly you People should be ashamed of yourself this is your job don't be lazy when it comes to the life of these animals they mean a-lot to the people who bring them to you. Even if they mean nothing to you but a payday. I hope that anyone choosing Pennell reads this and runs far away read more

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I could not disagree more with the negative reviews posted here. Dr. Syken has been my vet for 8 years. Previously, I visited vets who booked multiple appointments at the same time as mine, then had me and my dog wait in a treatment room while they visited with other pets until our 'turn' rotated around again. There was absolutely no respect given to my time, only theirs. Conversely, at Pennell Vet, you are given an appointment time and the vet - whether Dr. Syken or his associate - sees you at the appointed hour .. not 15-30 minutes afterward. I like that. Plus, his staff could not be more personable. I had to put down a Westie in 2009 and my Doxie just this past October and the staff could not have exhibited more empathy in their understanding of how I felt. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Syken and his staff. read more

My family and I have used Pennell vet for more that 15yrs .In that time he and his staff have treated and helped with all my pets. And I have a lot. He has a unique way of knowing the problems and a direct way of fixing it. I have always been more than happy with the service and the prices by far are lower than any animal hospital in the area. He performed a acl operation on my dog some years ago giving my boxer mix a longer more productive life. Most vets would have recommended exspensive recovery theraphy. But Dr Syken gave me the address of an aquatics pool out off 926. No set fee you just donated to the horse farm ( 10$) . Even after recovery I took my dog there for happy swims thanks to Dr Syken. Most folks want a vet who doubles as a family physician thats not what vets are for . Dr Syken is " matter of fact" with treatment and diagnosis and in my opinion the best vet Delaware County has.And Dr Michelle is a great addition to the team. Keep up the great work. read more

Dr. Seiken is by far the best vet around the area. Very knowledgeable about all things. He also is a very humble man. Took me right away when my cat had an emergency ( who later passed) was with me the whole time. Also when my 8 year old vizsla contracted lepto he did all that he could to help her...when she succumbed..Doc prayed at her side..again staying with us ..A very gentle man. Brilliant mind. His staff was always great to us. As far as the office having fur in it..it's an animal hospital.everything was always sterile and clean when I was there. And that was A lot! read more

DO NOT COME HERE! My dog was treated as a burden more than a living animal from the one and only Dr.Syken, I have given him a few chances to redeem himself because everybody has their bad days. The first time he had my dog he was a pup, he was on his scale which sits about 3 feet from the ground, as he had him in his custody, he was careless and let him fall into the floor, then had the nerve saying he's fine, the second return, he was angry that I had my pup neutered at my dog's shelter and treated me as I betrayed him, then my final and last time he needed his bloodwork, while he attempted his first draw Dr. Syken's had flinched when my dog yelped in agony, he looked at me as if I did something wrong then said, can you hold your dog's head, to mind you he is very friendly and does not dare to bite or even growl at people, he stuck the needle into his front shin as he yelped in pain, my dog looked into my face as if he was helpless, Dr.Syken had the nerve to say, can he bleed any slower in a jokingly matter, he also was lazy to bandage his arm properly and put a cotton ball with scotch tape, I became very furious and promised NEVER to return to his care. The woman doctor which I neglect to remember her name is very kind and caring, I would recommend going to her for the care of your animals, I would not be surprised if she is saving his business and that is the only reason why I'm giving it two stars! read more

Aizawa, maybe Syken knows slightly more about dogs then you think.. considering having your dog fixed before 6 months can disturb his growth plates. I have been going to Pennell vet for over 6 years now, and have received nothing but quality care. I can agree that at times Syken can come off as a little cold, but at the end of the day I'm not seeing him for social hour, I'm seeing him because I know he loves, and takes really good care of my animals. read more

Everyone has their own experience and opinion. This is an update from my previous review on 6/29/2015. Thanks to Dr. Syken, our dog lived to almost 13 years. He passed away. Did you know that this facility doesn't put down animals, if there is a chance that this animal could be treated? I love it! Now, we have new puppy and choose this clinic for our dog again. Dr. Syken is not chatty type. But he knows his job and right to the point. I like it. Also, he doesn't overcharge you, like many other places do. I will recommend this Clinic to anyone. read more

I am a little confused by the 2013 comments. My wife and I have been taking our cats to Dr Syken for over 10 years, and have found him to have common effect on the cats. He has been very flexible to see our cats on any emergencies. In addition, compared to our prior vets, he has been a lower cost. Therefore, excellent service with no complaints. read more

Took our Chawawa Max for teeth cleaning, when we picked him up he was having trouble breathing and was panting very hard the incompetent person at the counter told us he was just glad to see us maybe if Dr Syken would have waited another 5 minutes till we got there he maybe would have noticed something was not right, we took max and on the way home he was dying , we immediately turned around and went back to the vet, the women at the counter told us there was nothing they could do because the Dr was not there we live 10 minutes away, the sad part is there was a REAL ANIMAL HOSPITAL 1\2 mile from the vet, the person thet handed us max has been working there a long time I guess she is clueless when it comes to anything, Dr Syken called the next day and said that it must have been a pulmonary thromboembolism, I think that his trachea was damaged during the procedure because of the way he was breathing, I tried giving him mouth to mouth but I could not get air to go in, at the end max was trying to gasp for air and died in my arms I will never forget the look in his eyes as to be saying daddy help me, Max's death is entirely the fault of the vet, and to add insult to injury he charged $600 for procedure and did not offer 1 dime back for killing our Max DON'T GO HERE FOR ANYTHING IF YOU TRULY LOVE YOUR PET.
