I ate here on May 21st, 2025. The waitress/cashier person, let's call her crochet lady Dawn, inflated the tip I gave her by misinforming me about the percentages on the buttons on the payment machine. She then told me that was it, and was reluctant to give me my receipt. I insisted on having my receipt and immediately saw the deceit, which she then claimed was a mistake. I found this hard to believe as she told us she was the regular cashier person, being forced to cook due to a staffing problem. She was obviously unhappy to be doing both jobs. Her comeback was that she "gets taxed on her tips!" The food was good but this dishonesty left a bad taste in my mouth! read more

I had gone in for food while staying at the hotel for my job. There are a couple of employees who don't do their job. One of the male employees is known to drink alcohol and sleep in his vehicle when there are customers wanting to order food. This morning upon checking out, I was told there were customers who ordered food. I wasn't in a hurry and was more than ok with waiting to get ice in my cups. I offered to get the ice in my cups until I was yelled at and my cup was snatched out of my hand. No need to be rude to a guest/customer because of of being mad at a fellow co-worker. read more

My wife and I visited this restaurant for the first time last night, for supper. Yampa is a very small, remote town with one general store, one motel, one diner, and one coffee shop, so we had low expectations for Penny's. It was surprisingly large, like a typical mom-n-pop diner of yesterday, clean, bright, plenty of parking, we welcomed as we arrived, and served within a couple minutes. They had a decent amount of breakfast and dinner choices on their colorful menu, and prices were rather expensive as you would expect in a small town with basically no other options. I had their main cheeseburger & fries and it was delicious, but quite small, and the fries were crispy and delish. Penny's was the only place in town that was open. We were going to eat there, but when we got to the front door there is a sign that the restaurant is open, but it's not open to the public. Only to people that are staying in the hotel next door. So we were not impressed with that, obviously. read more

Four of us stopped at this diner for lunch on Wednesday June 30th. Lindsey waited on us, service and food was nothing special normal diner fare. As Lindsey ran my card for the tab total $55.54 I handed her a $10 bill as a cash tip. She gave me a pen that wrote faintly and I put a line through the tip portion and totaled for $55.54. She asked if I needed a receipt and I told her no, she said good (which I thought was strange). I found another dollar which I gave her to add to the tip. The next day I checked my account and found I had been charged an additional $11 bringing the tab total to $66.54. I wonder how many others have fallen victim to this scam. In the future I will make sure I get a copy of my charges. I normally leave a 20% tip, but neither the food nor service was worth a 50% tip. read more

Average mom and pop diner. Chicken fried steak, fish and chips, and chicken tenders are all previously frozen and flash fried. From the looks of it everything is previously frozen. I guess that's common for a short order diner. You can see the whole line and the cleanliness is just meh, meaning not a huge issue if you were cooking at home but a little questionable in a restaurant. One cook and one waitress. Takes forever just to get an order put in. I think I saw the cook change gloves once In between 7-8 orders. Cook also goes by one ticket at a time so it takes a long time when there is a full house meaning about 20 people. Bathrooms are GROSS. I used a paper towel to turn the faucets off because it was so yuk. Food however was great and shakes to go were yummy! Average diner but it tasted great! read more

Don't waste your time. Took over an hour to get our food that should have taken 15 minutes. Food was either way over cooked and sat forever, or raw fried. Would have asked for some mayo, ketchup or maybe something else but never had our server come back. read more

We came here for breakfast and it was delicious! I had the hopped up hash browns. Super hardy and perfect before a day of snowboarding. Service was friendly and the old decorations are a nice touch. This is by far the worst place I have ever stayed in my life. I've stayed in ghetto motels with better customer service than here. No mid week. The phone doesn't work. Staying with my 7 year old. Been here two weeks. The tub hasn't been cleaned once. Neither has the toilet. Not by a housekeeper. 400 dollars a week I should expect a higher level of customer service. Oh and the diner is out of chicken strips and bacon. No stars. read more

Be warned: terrible, unsanitary service/food at Penny's Diner in Yampa cafe. The cooks prepared ONE ticket at a time, resulting in a long line. One of the waitresses stepped outside to smoke, then proceeded to prepare food without washing her hands. Food was of the poorest quality, as was the wait. Went to Penny's today for the first time. The restaurant is quaint, the food mediocre. I would have given the place at least two stars, except for the fact that the waitress brought her toddler aged daughter to work with her. The child sat right behind us and SCREAMED the entire time we were there. Nothing was done to try to quiet the child. Finally I had to just leave, with only two bites out of my burger. I hope the manager or owner reads this review and speaks to the staff. One of my worst dining experiences in my whole life. read more

This is a diner folks. Open 24 hours a day. Food takes awhile to prepare but it's done right in front of you. Don't be looking for the gourmet meal. It's just good edible food, it's what it is. Three of us went into Penny's for lunch. We sat there for 15 minutes and no one said anything to us or got us any drinks. We each used the restroom and waited another 10 minutes, but still no service. It was uncomfortable because they were cooking right in front of us, yet never gave us any service. Some people sat down next to us and they were helped right away (they knew the people cooking). So, we just got up and left and the franchise Kum & Go down the street got our money.
