I started with Alana at Penobscot Dermatology 2 years ago. She was everything the person below wrote and more. She is sensitive, empathetic, very intelligent, and made me feel very comfortable. They provide cloth gowns to wear during exams, not paper gowns I read in other dermatologists in the area. I don't know any of the other doctors there, so my experience is based only on how kind Alana is. The waiting room is disabled friendly. The staff were very professional - I prefer staff I can connect with. They were extremely businesslike. Alana gets the 5 stars. I would have deducted another star if it was based on the entire visit because of unfriendly staff. That being said, I recommend Penobscot Dermatology. read more

I have to travel quite a distance to go here but it is well worth it. Alana and her assistants are wonderful and often a lot of fun too. Very responsive if I need to call and reschedule an appointment. And have been very accommodating of my schedule. The office is fine. They do exactly what they are told. Do not interact beyond the requirements. No smiles, no asking how you are doing. This is typical for office staff anywhere. I really hope that when I change insurance next year they will still be able to see me. read more

My husband Larry & I have been patients there for three years. Loved the care I got the nurses & doctors. They get 5 stars I am pretty disappointed with the administration there though. They get 0 stars . We both had an appointment mid January and just got a call here at the end of December that they no longer took our insurance and they canceled our appointment and canceled us as patients. ( they said that they had sent us a letter, and they never did ) It's happened to a number of people in this area and nobody is happy with it. Bad way to run a business..... read more

We've been going to Penobscot Valley Dermatology for three years now, and last week our appointments that were scheduled 1 year out were cancelled on us with three weeks notice. The reason was that they dropped our insurance - Humana. They told us that we were warned previously, but they never did that. This has happened to a number of other patients, and their front office telephone person let us know that she's dealt with a number of others in the same situation and that she was very frustrated. Letting her hang out to dry like this was especially uncaring. In addition, they said they don't accept self pay, so if we want to go to them we have to switch insurance companies. The fact that they are literally the only dermatology office in the Bangor area should lead them to help their clients, not turn their backs on them. read more

One of the worst clinic's to deal with. First appointment for psoriatic arthritis took 3 months to get. Once there someone who isn't even a doctor came in looked my over for less than one minute and sent me on my way with a prescription. Clinic never corespondent with my primary care doctor and I ran out of meds. Numerous calls to the clinic and no return calls. Go somewhere else because clearly this place does not care about your well-being read more

So I had 1 appointment with PVD. I get there and it's a nice office and location. I got my hopes up. I spent only a few minutes with the doctor and told him of my severe CIU issues, burning hives and itching... plus mobility issues when really bad. He prescribed Plaquenil right off the bat, no biopsy, no blood work. The reaction I got to the medicine was severe swelling, where my toes still having fully recovered from 3 months later, I also started having neuropathy, meaning I had lost feeling in my feel and calves. My PCP, Rheumatologist, and my insurance tried calling them to no avail. My appointment comes up later for a biopsy. I had to cancel but couldn't get in touch, I was having another severe flare up and went to the ER. ER tried calling the office, again to no avail. So here it is 3 months later! I get a call from PVD to try to set up another appointment and that my insurance had requested my documents. I explained to the person on the phone that it was on April 16th that it was requested for short term disability, it is now June 3rd... all I got was we are a really busy office lmao... my Orthopedics office is extremely busy, but they return the call within a few days. I want to update my review of Penobscot Valley Dermatology from 1-17-23. After leaving a general message to my Provider, a few hours later a woman named Angela returned my call. I apologize for not knowing what Angela's position there was, but I know she was working closely to my Provider and with her knowledge and professionalism, I concluded that she a PAC (with her knowledge she may have been a Doctor-I apologize for that). She went above and beyond, listened to my complaints, unwavering, and immediately started working on solutions for me. She said that there have been a few complaints about the person who didn't return phone calls and that they are dealing with it. She additionally contacted me the following two days with a plan for a new prescription and testing. I would not hesitate to recommend them to others and will be staying with them. Unfortunately, every Medical Group and most business's today have "that employee" that could affect their patients/customers and their reputation. That being said, Angela has renewed my faith in them with her relentless working with me even though I know that I'm not their only patient. Kudos to Angela and thank you! Driving from Caribou (six hour round trip), waiting half an hour for the Doctor to meet with me for less than two minutes was not helpful. He spent the time giving instruction to his assistant, did not answer any questions then told me to reschedule. Terrible manner, was quite rude and unprofessional. read more

My husband and I look forward to our annual appointments with Dr. Hartford at PVD. He answers all of our questions thoroughly, no matter how trivial we think they might be. He is very patient and respectful. And he is very thorough, so we can be confident that he is taking good care of us. He is also thoughtful and aware of our personal circumstances that might limit our ability to be seen. To that end, he tries his best to work us in before an extended trip, for example, or when we are going to be back in the Orono area. PVD has a MOHLS surgeon and skin care products, as well. We highly recommend PVD! read more

Cons- You can never get a live person. You ALWAYS have to leave a message and wait for a call back. The check in area is strange, there isn't room to stand and give people privacy/space unless you go back out the door or into the waiting room. The front office staff is hit or miss. Some are friendly, most are short and clipped, minimal words and an attitude that makes you feel like you're bothering them. My appointment, which I waited 4+ months for, was about 15 minutes and that's it. I had taken pictures of my skin issue over a period of months to carefully document it and no one even bothered to look at them. Pros- The MA and FNP I saw were both very nice, especially the MA. Switching to Northern Light in Ellsworth. I've heard it's worth the drive versus going back here. read more

If I could give a less than one star rating I would. 1. Unfortunately my office asked me to attend an event last minute so I called 23 hours and 50 minutes from my appointment time to cancel my appointment. They considered that a "no show" because it was less 24 hours so to be seen again I have to pay $50 on top of my $30 copay if I want to be seen again, because I was 10 minutes late. 2. My mother went to an appointment for a nerve legion on her face that had previously been diagnosed. The NP who took care of her refused to believe the previous doctor and talked her into a biopsy. When they took the biopsy, they couldn't stop the bleeding so they decided to cauterize it. My mother now has 1/2 an exposed nerve legion and a 1/2 a cauterized sore and a burn on healthy skin, on her face!!! This will leave quite a scar. It's all about adding more services and charging you more money. You have been warned. read more

Beautiful facility but the lack of knowledge was very disappointing. I only brought my daughter there three times and never went back. First of all my daughter was recently diagnosed with KP with another dermatologist from a different practice. He examined her and knew exactly what she had. If anyone knows about KP you do not treat it like acne. That is exactly what the dermatologist did at Penobscot Valley. The medication that was prescribed was not working and I wonder why....... Because it's not ACNE it's KP! You would think the dermatologist at Penobscot Valley would no the difference! I was also disappointed when I asked about a tinted acne cream to cover my daughters break outs (Which at the time that is what I thought it was, I am no professional. I leave that up to them) and was told "NO, we don't have anything like that and to just use foundation". Seriously! I know for a fact that there is acne tinted cream! I have heard other complaints regarding this place and maybe the experience I had was due to inexperienced dermatologist. I hope this review helps someone as there is good and bad reviews.
