When I was still watching the news, I saw a story about a spice company targeted after a visit from our vice president and current lighthouse for democracy. Yes, people in red hats were trying to sabotage this rather middle class sounding business that trades in pure vanilla and a hundred varieties of salt. Its owner, Bob, also happens to use the business platform to promote truth, freedom, democracy. I like those things almost as much as tacos. So I was thrilled to find out we have a Penzeys sitting on a corner in Carytown. I really did decide to visit because I planned to make tacos and needed some good seasoning. It is the kind of place that makes me slightly overstimulated. What do I look at first? Oh, they have bumper stickers! Wow, some vanilla costs almost as much as a car payment? (I kid.) The place is a home cook's fantasy and I loved it. Because I felt confused by abundance, I decided to buy a small gift box. They have so so many choices, but I opted for the January 6th box. The set includes a small (22 g) jar of the aforementioned justice, season salt, and outrage. These jars are adorable, relevant, and rage-inducing, the spices are fresh and taste good, and I felt vindicated buying from a brand putting its values right out there in people's faces. I also really liked the service. The person who helped me was super nice, assuring me that their mild taco seasoning was not spicy. When I explained that my 83 year old mom can't really tolerate much spiciness, she reassured me and gave me one of their "hug" coins to take home for mom. Really really great vibe. We decided to stop in to see what it was. ***LOCATION*** On the more west side of Carytown next to Crenshaw ave and close to Kroger. ***EXPERIENCE*** This shop has all your spice needs! We came in to explore and ended up leaving with a tiny bottle of turmeric that was on a great sale. I love the way this shop is set up. Any spice you can dream of is probably here. They had everything from dry rubs to baking spices to simple kitchen spices. Another great feature is there are tester jars by every spice so you can smell it before purchasing it. They also have amazing descriptions of the spices on these jars. Not sure how I missed this awesome spot in the past. ***PRICE*** Most of the smaller bottles started at $5. We got a small bottle of turmeric on sale for $1. ***CONCLUSION*** Instead of going to the grocery store next time I run out of paprika or turmeric, I'm gonna stop here! I recalled reading about Penzeys Spices on Yelp when I walked by the shop en route to another spot on Cary Street. I had to circle back and ended up leaving with four different, high-quality spice blends. They definitely recommend masks here and are very focused on cleanliness, which is good. I asked if I could set my four spices down on the counter while I did one last perusal and was given a basket instead. There wasn't anyone else in the shop at the time, so I wasn't sure why I couldn't set them down, but that's fine. She then said she sanitizes all the baskets before putting them back out when I handed it back a couple of minutes later. The store is stocked with every type of spice you could possibly want. I've used two of my four spices so far -- the parsley and the lemon pepper, and I really enjoy both of them. I will definitely be back once I need to replenish them. The ingredients I need for my barbecue dry rubs are bought here, as is everything you could want in the kitchen. Thoughtfully sourced and a good variety. For instance, if you want cinnamon you can choose between Penzey's regular, Vietnamese, or Ceylon varieties. The store itself is spacious and smells heavenly. My go-to source for spices was Ellwood Thompson, but when COVID-19 shut down its bulk section (it's back up now), Penzeys was just blocks away. It's a small space that is not allowing customers in store, but it has an excellent contactless pickup system in place: order online at Penzeys.com, make an appointment, pick up order from crate in front of the store, easy peasy. Because I prefer to replenish smaller quantities of spices more frequently, I don't shop Penzeys as much as I might, but its products have never even remotely disappointed. Its peppercorns, saffron, and cardamoms are without peer, as is everything else I've ever used from here. Plus the staff is knowledgeable. Get on the mailing list for special promotions - the magnet, pin, and two jars of Revolution (a versatile peppery turmeric seasoning that adds crunch and zest) seasoning were free with a $10 purchase. I'll confess the design aesthetic is not for me, but the promotion was made to express solidarity with the racial-justice demonstrations for which RVA is a focal point. I used to pass this place by because I thought surely a spice specialty store in Carytown is bound to be expensive. Well, the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" exists for a reason, my friends. To me, it wasn't outrageously expensive at all! Most of the individual spices were as much or maybe slightly more expensive as you would find in the grocery store. When I walked in, I got a whiff of the most amazing, fresh spices. They're easily organized by spice type and I was able to navigate easily on my own. I came in looking for spices for a Christmas gift for a person in my life who has recently gotten into cooking. I loved that Penzeys had so many gift sets in the back of the store and I found the perfect one for a variety of meats. There's seriously something for everyone! If I cooked more, this place would be a staple in my shopping routine. Because I don't love cooking, I likely won't be making special trips to the area just to go to this store. Mmmmm, seasons greetings... the aroma pleasantly smacks you in the face as you gingerly walk into this treasure trove of herbs and spices. Your olfactory senses will have a field day as you meander by the coriander. Take your thyme in each section, as the store is grouped by each spice or herb with multiple variations-I had no idea how many different paprikas there are! And so many salts... kosher, grey, pink, Himalayan... I bought the flaked salt. How'd you like to be a pepper? Well, pepper galore! I bought the Lemon Pepper which smelled heavenly! Despite this place having quite a variety of spices, if you come here looking for something very specific, you probably won't find it. In that sense, while being able to come here is useful in terms of being able to actually smell the spices before purchase, shopping online is otherwise a preferable option. I came here with a friend, myself looking for Baharat and her looking for a specific kind of sea salt. The employees there were polite and helpful, though we quickly learned they had neither of our desired items. We perused the store anyway and were reasonably impressed; the selection of vanilla sugar was really nice, and if I ate breakfast more often, I definitely would have availed myself of a jar. The trouble with stores with such a specific bent as this one is that you go in expecting them to have EVERYTHING and of course their floorspace doesn't allow that. So, you approach it logically: if you can buy general spices from the grocery store and hard-to-find spices can only be had online, you get squeezed away from stores like this on both ends. Add to the equation the high prices that come with having to pay for a brick-and-mortar shop and you realize that this place is only really for locals who want to try something fancy and support local stores at the same time. There is something about Penzeys Spices which I enjoy going into. I think it is the fragrance of all the spices which makes you hungry. I am a TRUE lover of spices in my food and this is a great place to spend an hour. I go from spice to spice and testing many in how they taste. They have a sample jar there which you can pour a little in the palm of your hand, I it gives you an idea of what it taste like. In addition, it is worth signing up to get their magazine as it has many wonderful recipes, including a Free Offer on a new spice coming into the store.... Also, a lot of good background on the spices they have and where they come from and how to use them.... If you have not been, this is a great place to go. The people in there are extremely wonderful and they are willing to help if you need them. I do not go often as I am not in that part of town often, but when I do.... The best smelling store in town for sure! They have spices from around the world and there are sample jars everywhere so you can take a sniff. I have been in here multiple times over the years but have never bought anything until recently. The main reason why I have never bought anything was due to the price point of some of spices and seasonings and it didn't justify my purchase since I was cooking that much. I have been cooking a lot more since last summer and needed some new spices to help elevate some of my cooking. I came in here looking for salt based spices and asked one of the workers there where they were and got very helpful information. I wish I knew her name, but the employee was extremely nice and knowledgeable of the store and all the spices she showed me; she recommended what spices to use with what protein and even described how they tasted. I walked away with a jar of 4s spice and Garlic salt which I highly recommend and have been using on a weekly basis. The only thing I wished this store offered was samples of each spice/seasoning.. but maybe that isn't possible?
