I love supporting Penzeys and I love this location! There is plenty of space here to browse and everything is always so neat and organized. The employees here are so friendly and helpful. The negative comments here are from losers that probably only season their food with salt (if at all!) and have never even stepped foot in the store. This is not just a spice shop. For me, it's an activity. Went with my mom after eating at harvest down the street. I don't have photos of all the spices she got. We smelled a million lol they don't have a million but they have a lot. Make sure to smell all the various cinnamon bc it's so cool how different they are. I won't tell you my favorite bc you have to decide yours. O got some basics like sweet paprika, coriander but got a Paris spice that to me smells like I need to cook salmon stat. Get the Balti- put to. On chicken thighs and bake. Trust me it's the best. I go through more of that than anything. I also got a chicken stock base, which I haven't. I got the dip powder which you put into like the shower cream to make dip. It's kind of like when you make ranch dressing from the powder which I like to do, but this just makes it a little bit different because the ranch gets boring. And it is very good. We can't recall being in a store with a friendlier staff. They are just delightful and so helpful. Even if you're not buying, they can't resist a big smile. And, Penzey's has a wonderful stock of spices and blends, and while it is not inexpensive, we have found their quality to be consistently high. The store is very attractively laid out with lots of space for browsing (check out the photos), and there are lots of products to browse. We are fond of some of the herbs and mace, but that's hardly a focus for others. We think it's worth going out of your way to shop here if you're in need of a little spice in your life! read more

Wonderful place to get spices! They had such a big selection and different prices for the different sizes that they sell. Sach a vast selection of salts, spices without salts, peppers, cinnamon, hot chocolate etc... I wish I had more time to really look at the while store but we were kind of in a rush. But wow!!! I love that store and I wish they were down here in Orlando. That would be great! But I definitely would love to make another trip to this store next time I'm in Connecticut. It's hard to be better than Penzys. The variety, the flavor. While this location is not my favorite spot in the whole country, it does rank right up there. You can walk and smell any spice you want. I recommend trying the different vanilla extracts, but most especially the almond extract. In that corner, they also have citrus extracts. Whether you like spice blends, herbs, extracts or just inspiration, Penzys is simply awesome. read more

I've been using Penzeys Spices for years, and will never go back to the stale and tasteless products so often out there. I'm frequently complimented on being a good cook, and I know that using flavorful Penzey's herbs and spices make all the differece. I also really like the fact that they have a lot of herb & spice blends that are sodium free - that allows me to salt the dish as needed, depending on other ingredients so that my dishes never end up more salty than anything else. Upgrading to five stars on the strength of their recent expansion. In November, they took over the space on the left side of where their old space ended. Penzey's is huge now, and you can spend a good 45 minutes just wandering around in amazement. I picked up a jar of Colonial Rub to use the next time we roast a whole chicken, and a jar of pizza spices. If you subscribe to their catalog you'll usually find a coupon for a free something or other. Our freebie of the day was a nice Penzey's coffee mug. Having the store right here in West Hartford is very convenient so I was a bit skeptical of having to go online, order and then pick up because the store currently doesn't let customers in. I purchased one small item on the website for pickup at the store since I needed it tonight and it was in stock, and they said I wouldn't be able to pick it up for 2-3 days because they were "backed up" even though it was in stock. That wait time is ridiculous, when spices are are all you sell. Don't expect to get anything in a timely fashion during COVID, even if you go there to pick it up yourself. If I had an addiction and if I had a dealer, my addiction might be spices and Penzeys might be my dealer. IF - huge hypothetical there. Cutting to the chase: Penzeys has the best spices at hugely reasonable prices and I love finding reasons to stop in and get some new spice to try. My standbys that are always in my cupboard are the Sunny Paris blend which I use almost daily on scrambled eggs, Mural of Flavor, and the European Peppercorn blend which I get when I am tired of regular Malabar Peppercorns. My favorite thing about Penzeys, however, has nothing to do with this physical location and everything to do with their mailing list. As mail ordering Penzy's spice for years before they opened the West Hartford store. Much fresher than supermarket spices. The Vietnamese cinnamon is to die for. The Sunny Paris herb mix is perfect for eggs and chicken. Peppercorns that are actually flavorful. Ground ginger that is pungent. Open a jar of a Penny herb or spice and the aroma is so much better. Before I tried them, I assumed that Penzey's would be expensive, but I was wrong. The prices are very reasonable and comparable to supermarket prices for the quality brands, sometimes even cheaper. But the taste of the spices is fabulous! For example, their chili powder is far more flavorful than a supermarket mix. It has real depth and brings chili to life. Same for the cinnamon. And go smell that jerk seasoning for pork! Wow. You can buy spices in different sized jars and bags, so that you always have fresh spice. I'm such an addict now, and it makes me try new recipes.
