This is the spot to get whole catfish, it's a great price and has been fresh each time! The size of the catfish is about 2 lbs and they're headless and skinless. This is the perfect size for making mohinga (Burmese catfish soup). They also have a fish service counter if you need them to cut it into smaller pieces. They have nice big sturdy plastic bags that can fit the whole fish. They have separate service counters for chicken, fish, and beef/pork which is helpful to reduce cross contamination. It's super cold so make sure you bring a down jacket and beanie! The service line sometimes takes a bit of time so just be aware of that. There are plenty of other meat offerings like whole chicken, pork, sausage, beef, etc. All of them look really fresh and very competitive pricing. There's also a grocery store section where you can buy fresh vegetables, spices, and even baked goods like paczkis. The Bavarian cream paczki was delicious and not too sweet. There's also bulk frozen foods like fries and jalapeno poppers (if I remember correctly). Finding a whole catfish in Chicago can be difficult and I'm glad I can always trust Peoria packing for my catfish needs. The whole 2 lb catfish was only $6, incredible deal! The parking lot is decently sized, on a busy day like Christmas or Thanksgiving you can drive further near where the trucks are parked and park along the fence. For special holiday hours they were responsive both through Instagram DM and phone calls to confirm their hours! Really great service. They recently moved to this new location in October 2025. It used to be near Fulton Market in West Loop. Different location but same great service and item selection, probably more spacious too. read more

This is an amazing place to shop! New, modern and large ; in a nicely gated large lot you can park while you shop! The CTA bus stops right on the corner on Roosevelt Road, outside the store. It is cold inside the Butcher Shop, so be prepared- because they have an amazing selection of fresh meats- poultry- seafood and others. Give yourself time to shop, just wear a sweater or something! They also have a very impressive Grocery Store with all your daily needs; dairy; milk, eggs, frozen items; both veg, seafood and others. Very clean place and super nice to Check out. Make sure you wear the gloves they provide when you select your fresh items, in the Butcher Shop. Signs are up. They have the areas for each department where they can help you cut , scale fish or whatnot. Everything is labelled really well throughout the Shop and it's helpful for the customers. I love the new store. It's so much bigger and airier than the old store. And the selection of fresh cut meats is great. And it seems to me that you get a better deals at Peoria, than you do in the grocery stores. Because it's just me, a hundred dollars can go a long way for meat for the month. Our neighbor talked about this place so we stopped in on a weekday afternoon. All of the meat is laid out in an open and cold room (Bring a jacket because it gets cold). Gloves are available for you to utilize to bag your proteins. They also have other non-traditional meats that might not be sold at the grocery store like smoked meats, turkey, pork feet, etc. We were also able to ask the butcher for beef bones. Outside of the meat room, there is also a small grocery store with some basic produce and pantry items. There is a parking lot available which is nice! read more

He was quick and very nice and help and pick out 12 pounds of gizzards and hearts and kidneys and whole chickens, and they grounded up for me to make fresh food for my dogs. This is the most unsanitary way to purchase meat. The uncovered cuts are laid into open tables for the public to grab what they want. I've never seen anything like it. And - no - they don't have flap steak. I asked one of the butchers directly. Honestly was horrified the moment I walked in. I don't understand how this passes inspection. I Love this place. I have been to many butcher shops but this one is my favorite. The butchers are very helpful and gave great advice.

One of the few remaining meat markets in the West Loop / Meatpacking district. This is the place to be if you're looking to get large slabs of meat. Impressive costs for tomahawk steaks or slabs of ribs for a good price. Quality wise, it's fairly supermarket level, no fine marbling or asking the butcher what he recommends, this here is put on a pair of gloves and grab it yourself. I visited on a Monday pre-Christmas afternoon and there is a line out the door. Fortunately, the wait isn't too bad and it was much needed since it was fairly crowded in a narrow space with a cart. Personally for me, I'll pick up a shopping basket to be a bit more nimble. There's also another section for the traditional deli and pantry items which are higher costs. Anyway, you're here for one reason and that's meat. Free parking lot makes for easy access. read more

I go to the store on Lake street to buy the pork spare ribs advertised at $2.29 per lb. That seems like a really decent price for the season. Once inside the store I find the ribs sprawled out on the table ,naked as the day they were born. The butcher was either in a rush or didn't know what he was doing because the ribs had a butchers cut running down the center of all the ribs on that table. The worst part of the butcher job is that they did the minimum on the trimming . Every last rib had at least 40 % of inedible and unusable meet on it. These ribs were 60% to 70% all fat . After you take them home and finish the job that the butch purposely half done you'd be left with way less than what you paid for. This Peoria Packaging/Meats store knows exactly how they are cheating the customer. I almost forgot to mention that the scales they have at various location in the store are totally inaccurate . I weighed my meat several times and they came out to be half the weight that the scale built in to the cash register had. When I weighed my meat on the manual scales on the meat floor they came out to be 7 pound but at the register they had doubled to more than 14 + pounds . This was the exact case for all three slabs that I took to the register for purchase. After the girl at the counter rung this meat up I found myself doing a double take when she explained in detail what I was being charged for in weight. As I said previously, I weighed my rib at the manual scales on the store floor(Measure twice, cut once). I was like WHAT THE FRICK is going on here. I asked the cashier again what the total price was and she again repeated this outrageous number. I did NOT argue with her I just told her politely I did not want the ribs. She looked at me almost shocked with her mouth wide open and a look of REALLY. I walked out the door promptly , got in my car and drove to THE WALMART Super Store in Hammond Indiana where I purchased 3 fully trimmed full spare rib slabs with the tips attached(not St. Louis styled) for less than $12.50 per slab. The quality of these Walmart ribs are also more than 100 % better than the ones at Peoria. Also, ALL the meat on the Walmart ribs are usable and edible . I only had to trim off a little flab, a small amount of fat(less than a ounce per slab) All I can suggest to you as a customer /shopper at any store is not to pay by pound for meats or other products sold by weight is fat and unusable and inedible parts. IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY. read more

I was happy when I moved to NYC that the seafood was cheap and excellent when you shopped in Chinatown. Being in Chicago which (I had no idea until I moved here) is the beef/pork mecca of the US. A vast majority of the meat is processed here in Chi-town and shipped all across the USA. Here you walk into a refrigerated room and can pick from any cut of meat your heart desires and I'm sure if you can't find it here, they'll get it for you. The selection and prices are exceptional. They even have two walls of spices/rubs and sauces you can pick up on your way out. Great for large parties or if you wanna get something for your family cookout. Glad I found this place. read more

Always has good chicken breast for 1.99 per LB But I would stay away from the steaks and beef products UNLESS you plan on slow cooking it. I know how to cook a steak but every time I buy a steak from here, New York, Tbone, Ribeeye, and cook it on the grill, stove/oven it is inedibly chewy. I have even tried making it rare and same thing. I have tried maybe 6 or 7 times. I personally think it's the quality of the beef. Slow cooking it always turns out fine, so I usually stock up on sirloin roast from here for whenever I plan on making slow cooked beef. But honestly it might not be worth the trip because you can find some good deals at local groceries on what is probably higher quality meat and stock up then. I wish they would display the grade of the meat they are selling. I would pay higher prices for better meat for certain cuts, like steaks! read more

I would say sometimes it's the best to smell like meat all over in order to get good deals for you all carnivores! Enter the "Peoria Packing Butcher Shop." I like this place, and you're right: my sensory is temporarily numbed because of the copious amount of meat I'm surrounded by, but the money I save from buying the meat here can get me an extra bottle of air refresher for sure. In other words, this meat shop is really meaty. You help yourself on grabbing the meat you want to purchase with a pair of disposable gloves. The prices are clearly listed and they were rung correctly upon checkout. I know some Yelpers have experienced price discrepancies and were over-charged, yet I didn't have any trouble whatsoever. I found deals on their lamb chops; they were $4.99/lb. and I got almost four (4) pounds worth of them. Most lamb products I have seen in grocery stores throughout Chicagoland are around 7 or 8 bucks per pound. With that being said, I can have lambs a little more often without feeling B-ROKE! There's a butchering station in the back of store. I didn't need the guys to cut off the meat. I guess they can help break apart the ribs or bones. If I ever need it, I will definitely utilize the service in the future. So the first part of the shop is the giant freezer of raw meat (pork, beef, chicken, frozen seafood, sausages, and etc.). Anyway, the list isn't exhaustive. The second part, on the other hand, is the stuff that goes with the meat: spices, veggies, frozen meat, deli meat, and groceries in general. I skipped the latter portion rather quickly since I already stocked non-meat items in the fridge. The checkout was efficient, in spite of being pretty crowded in the early Sunday afternoon (and the Bears made it to the playoffs). During our trip I had to maneuver the cart fairly carefully to avoid unnecessary collisions. However, for the most part, patrons were courteous and we were able get through each aisle. One last thing to mention: they do charge bags ($0.07/bag) even though many meat shops in the city sometimes include free bags to prevent meat drips. In addition, the young lady at the register asked for my ID with the credit card purchase. Therefore, bring an ID, just in case. read more
