It's a distributor for local restaurants that also will sell to the public I was curious about this place and stopped in not too much signage for the entrance but went in through the parking lot and walked through to an office area where a very friendly person was sitting. After asking about the place it seems you can get a variety of beef pork and chicken. I was there for some Italian sausage and got a 5 pounds of it which was just made and had good flavors. I've frequented Columbus meats since they were on Randolph before they were pushed out by the farm to table gastro pubs with artisan light bulbs, when they moved to Fulton before they were pushed out by Google. Now that they're at their new location 4420 S Tripp Ave, Chicago, IL 60632 they have more parking and still have great meat and great prices. They're more geared twards selling direct to restaurants but they'll take walk in if you have cash. They're cryopacked briskets are the best. You can find a nice fat back, or if you prefer something leaner they'll keep bring em out until you find the right cut and size. If you're looking for the perfect cut of meat to smoke or grill it's worth the trip. read more

Growing up in Chicago, I always had fond memories of going to our local butcher with various family members, especially my mother. The meat was as fresh as you could find and you always had complete digression as to how the meat was cut. As the large chain supermarkets undercut the butcher shops, they disappeared. The only option I thought I had for meat was the superstore meat department with their pre-cut packaged meats. I was then introduced to Whole Foods and found the same tasting meat I ate as a child. The fresh high quality flavor was obviously a step or two above anything I could find at the Jewel. The only downside, Whole Foods meat is really expensive, so I researched to find a better option. A friend of mine who is a Chicago chef at a quaint high end restaurant told me to try the meat market. He gave me the name of Columbus Meat Market and told me he that the price for the quality is unmatched. I couldn't agree more. After one trip, I was hooked. For $100 I got an entire beef tenderloin (10 THICK fillets), 6lbs of FRESH ground beef, and two 16oz. porterhouse steaks. Columbus staff cut the fillet and porterhouse to the exact thickness I asked, and gave me the trimmings for my dog. Now I will say, the store smells like a butcher shop, and it is not as aesthetic the Whole Foods, but don't let the appearance fool you. You will not find a better deal on meat. The chicken, pork, and lamb are also top quality. Just go once and you will be hooked too. read more

Every time some honky hears me say I grill a lot, they ask me if I've visited (any of the 3 super expensive sausage stores on Lincoln between Belmont and Lawrence). Those places are like the Whole Foods of sausage - they're selling an image. And nothing honkies like better than an image. Look at those stupid fedoras they're all wearing this summer. If you want actual sausage, Columbus is where it's at. According to Chicago Magazine, they're the supplier for a lot of the better restaurants in town. I wouldn't be surprised - their prices are really good, the selection is great, and the guy I talked to was super helpful. The trick is that they sell a lot of stuff in 5lb boxes. It's worth asking what they've got loose that day. I was able to pick up a few Italian, Greek, and Polish sausages. I'd never had a Greek sausage before, and it was my favorite - I forgot what else was in it, but it's a lamb sausage with orange zest. Next time, I'm going to try the brisket - the guy quoted me 2.39/lb for an untrimmed 12-15 lb brisket -- this is cheaper than Costco, and almost certainly more fresh. read more

I was a butcher shop virgin before this, and read glowing Yelp reviews about Columbus. Therefore, it seemed like a good place to start. Got some steak and bacon there today, and though it looked good, I can't say the word "great" about it. A couple things bothered me. First of all, when we ordered T-bones, they weighed and priced them before trimming the fat. Also, their T-bone steak was really light on the tenderloin side. I know it's not huge on a T-bone, but I'm talking practically nonexistent. More like a bone-in New York Strip. Eh. Secondly, the guys here seemed like they were in a hurry and not really keen on answering questions. On the flip side, they were willing to give us unsliced bacon, which is cool. Maybe I just caught them on an off-day, but it was enough to make my eye wander up the street at the tons of other butcher shops around. read more

Ok Ladies and Gentlemen I have searched high and low for the best beef in the city. Subsequently I have been led to the meat haven known as the west loop meat packing district. When I have taken trips to do the nitty gritty research there I have found a bunch of great places and even better small business owners who will do anything to make you happy. Enter Columbus Meat Market. When I asked the owner if he carried USDA PRIME BEEF (which is only 2% of all beef produced in the U.S.) he gladly showed me the prize. Currently on hand he had only strip steaks (the part of the T bone commonly known as New York Strip) but he said he could have the cut of your choice in 1-2 business days. A definite A+++ P.S another great place for the PRIME is Olympic Meat Packers equally good with similar prices!!!! read more

This is the place for meat! I found this place a few years ago by just driving around and looking for some good Italian sausage (SauSEECH where I come from). They have the best sweet Italian in town, and the price cannot be beat. I've tried their hot Italian, some of my friends liked it, some didn't, it wasn't my favorite, but that's a judgement call, just like all food really is. Great staff working there, willing to help out on anything and they have a great selection of meat also. I've had the bacon from there as well, it was excellent. A friend tried the steaks, a big box of them, they were outstanding also. I'm the type of person that likes to check out all kinds of places, go into neighborhoods that make my friends go "um....", but good food knows no boundaries. Go here on a Saturday morning, park where you can, and take a trip around the area, you never know what else you may find. read more

Our friend, Jim, has brought Italian sausage to us on a number of occasions and insisted that one day we needed to accompany him to the source. So this morning we got an early start and found ourselves at the Columbus Meat Market, a place which I wouldn't normally have even thought to walk into since it's about as far from the nearly antiseptic supermarket counters that I'm used to these days as the quality of their meat is from what you can buy at those supermarket counters. Though it was busy, there were at least half a dozen workers cutting, weighing, caring for customers, and trotting huge cuts of meat out for us to inspect. We opted for the box of Italian sausage (something over six pounds of continuous sausage that has to be separated into links at home) a beautiful 10-rib pork loin roast, and a pork shoulder that probably weighs in at something like 8 or 10 lbs, and the tab was a bit over $40. We left wondering if we should peel out of our parking space fast before they figured out that they'd made a huge mistake in our bill. Let me just say that if you're squeamish, don't go. This place is not pretty. It's about meat. It's about great meat at great prices, but it doesn't make any pretense about that or about the fact that you're buying pieces of dead animal. This is the place to go if you're planning a big dinner party and you don't want to mortgage your house for a nice roast. read more

We've given up on finding beef tripe without the normal grocery butchers shuddering in distaste (Whole Foods was especially hilarious) until we were tipped off about this unpretentious little shop on West Randolph. The best thing is, nothing's esoteric. The beef tripe was hauled out in front fresh from the freezer, and you are given the option of buying a smaller portion. Fresh pork hocks and beef tongues will take special ordering, but give it a couple of days and they'll try and get it to you. They'll even ring to give you an update. What a fantastic place to get high quality meats. If you've never purchased the hot dogs or hamburgers from Columbus Meat Market, I guarantee you've never had hot dogs or hamburgers so tasty. And even better, the hot dogs are 100% beef, so no worries about the swine-flu! When I first called in to find out their prices, I was expecting to have to dig deep into my pockets, but nothing could be further from the truth. A 10 lb. box of jumbo hot dogs (40 1/4 pound hot dogs) runs for ~$26 and a 10 lb. box of hamburgers goes (40 1/4 pound burgers) for ~$25. That's an incredible value not only for the amount you get, but for the quality as well. I can honestly say that there really isn't a reason to go anywhere else when it comes to getting ready for a BBQ or a trip down to the Kentucky Derby! read more

Don't go here! It's dirty, they touch the cash and raw meat with the same hand. They are so rude & pretend to not hear how much meat you order, in order to up-sell you. I.e. "Oh, I thought you said 3 lbs, not 1. Oh, well it's already ground now, you are going to buy it, right?" Cash only, no obvious sign saying so. GO TO OLYMPIA MEATS!!! BBQ Buffs take note: I bought a 11.5 pound brisket for $3 a pound. Any of the north side butchers or super markets would charge $8 minimum, maybe as much as $11+ per pound. Most of the super markets are only selling flats. Call ahead to make sure they have the cut you're looking for in the size that you want. read more
