Since it was free for me... I thought.... you know I have never had a caricature of me made. Well I am always up for new experiences. Mikey J was friendly and very funny. We spoke a bit and then he asked me what are my three favorite hobbies.... hmmmm I said.... watching movies, reading and eating (darn you yelp for making food a hobby of mine!). So he had me sit down and he did my portrait in about 10 minutes it felt. Omg!!!! I laughed out loud when I saw my caricature! I shook his hand and thanked him. I was very impressed how he captured me and his skill. To my fellow yelpers.... do I look like my caricature? He did say he lives in Tampa so I wonder if he does these outside of the DC area.... anyway if you ever see him at an event... definitely get a caricature from him! Her portraits were good enough that we kept them to decorate our office! She was very talented, taking about 15 minutes to do really funny yet accurate paintings of our "best features". Sue painted both individuals and couples and even included highlights such as my boss and his numbers, and his wife and her shopping. She certainly captured my spiky buzzcut correctly! Side note: Either HR or accounting did the booking, but I believe you hire the artist through About Face's webpage and can see different portfolios.

I booked a party with a charicature artist for 3 hours (to the tune of $555.00 through my party…read moreplanner). During that time, only about 7-8 drawings were done and there were people in line for additional drawings. The artist did not know what the charges were for two more hours but I agreed and subsequently learned that during the drawing sessions with each party, significant time was taken for the artist to try to sell his own personal products to my party guests, and they were all shown a book to purchase. The following day the credit card was charged an additional $370.00 for TWO HOURS without any additional invoicing, and only a total of approximately 12 drawings were done during this 5 hour period. I brought it to management's attention and they told me too bad, so sad. The artist is well liked and they haven't had other complaints. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL and extremely disappointing treatment of their customer. They should be embarrassed!

In my mind, I was picturing a few KISS inspired faces, a David Bowie lightning bolt and that's about it. Arla was able to stretch the imagination and was able to provide so much more -- from demonic lizards to intricate and beautiful curliques -- she was able to please all types of personalities. Convincing a room full of adults to get their face painted is a feat in itself, but Arla was able to make a true believer out of the entire group. As an aunt of a three year old girl and sister to twelve year old twin boys - - I am no stranger to face painters, but Arla is truly something special! Not only is she extremely talented she is quick to boot! Within a blink of an eye, she was able to create a true masterpiece on my face. I am glad to have encountered them again -- and it being Arla herself at that! I went to the Persian New Year festival, Nowruz, where she and her team were painting TONS of children and adult faces throughout the entire day from 11am-5pm. During this time I got to speak to her about how she got into the business and how she had retained it so well. It is truly amazing how one falls into a career of something of this nature. She told me she used to be a professional clown, and won a makeup kit set at a convention she was at that was worth $200. From there she had perfected the art, and has been doing it now for over 25 years. We had a good laugh when she told me her husband was going to be left at home while she gets to work on 2 cruise ships in the next two weeks doing her business abroad in the Caribbean. Clearly she is renowned beyond the quadrants of Washington DC and the VA/MD areas. She has a great personality with quality and is very patient with kids, especially the younger crowd. That was demonstrated with the child before me who was excited right up until she sat in front of Arla. Instead of doing her face; Arla went on to do the hand of the tot's mother who joined in with a good laugh while the child was waling. As far as my face goes -- she immediately asked me if she could paint a necklace on my neck. I obliged. In addition to that, she painted my face.
