I LOVE P&M. I went specifically for house plants and they have a great selection. I would say they are better priced and more service-oriented than their competitors. I will continue to do my gardening business with P&M.

P&M is bar-none, my favorite greenhouse in Alaska. The have the widest variety of houseplants,…read moretropicals, annuals and perennials of any place in the area. The also have wonderful herbs, veggies, roses, carnivorous plants, a smattering of orchids... they even have banana "trees" and bird of paradise. Their plants are also incredibly healthy and robust. And best of all, their prices are, at a minimum 10% cheaper than anywhere else. In some instances, their prices are as much as 75% cheaper than other places. One of the reasons for that is they are a grower that provides plants to a lot of other retail shops. I think the other reason is because these people are serious plant lovers and really just want to share the joy. The location is a bit of an inconvenience as it's not really near, well, anything... but it's definitely worth it to make a couple trips throughout the year to see what offerings they have. As a person who formerly worked in a greenhouse, I can assure you, it doesn't get any better than this. Love love love, so much love. (Check out my pics, the proof is in the pudding.)

If you're into preserving your own harvest, whether it be meat or vegetation, this is a great shop for you. Of course it's mostly geared towards the preservation of meat, but they have so much to offer! I like to just peruse and check things out. Are things cheap there, no, they're not but they're a good quality too. Might you find something cheaper online, quite possibly and most likely at times. They did offer a military discount and I never balk at that!! Keep in mind, locally owned and operated, they can't always offer amazing discounts when they had to pay for shipping and such to get it up here too. We picked up a few items to add to or replace in our preservation repertoire today and we spent just as much time chatting it up with the two kind gentlemen that worked there as we did looking around. Talking techniques and recipes is great in our book!! The only thing I wish they would do is host some classes for making sausages and such; that would be fantastic and I keep telling them that. I know I'm not the only one around here who would attend!!

We could call them for supplies, have them repair equipment or any number of ways. Now we don't have the business but we still go here for good knives, vacuum packer supplies and repair. Rethink Home is a family-owned business located on W. Fireweed across from the VFW Post between Arctic and Spenard. The display floor is filled with an interesting mix of antique furniture, novelty items like 80's icon shirt button pins (Pac-Man, Mr. T, Galaga, Max Headroom, He-Man, and Q-Bert among others), a large detailed oil-style painting of Audrey Hepburn from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's displayed on the rear wall in the back room, Alaskan memorabilia, and crafts from local artists. Like all of my other reviews on antique stores, my main focus is the vinyl they have in wooden crates set up by the front register. The collection here is relatively small and like the secondhand thrift stores, they will arrive randomly without notice. There was an array of albums from the 40's and 50's up to the more modern artists from the 70's and 80's. I saw a few that caught my attention but unfortunately had to pass on because of the condition of some of the records. Some jazz albums I considered buying had visible surface scratches and split seams on either the top or bottom of the album covers. At $5 to $8 on some of these, these were priced relatively high by their condition alone. However, they did have a separate crate of records that were marked down to $2 or 50% from their original selling price, but again the condition was a concern. The nearby secondhand thrift stores had vinyl in better shape at only $1 apiece or .60 at the lowest with minimal surface scratches or fully intact album covers with the original inner sleeve available. However, the people running this store are very friendly and this place is a good option for anyone looking to purchase some paintings or a detailed wood-carved piece of vintage furniture.
