Had a girls weekend visiting a friend who moved to Tuscola and wanted to give Perini's steakhouse a try. Made reservations and we sat outside. It was a beautiful evening. Very casual restaurant. Staff is very attentive and friendly. We started with jalapeño poppers and fried quail. Must try!! I ordered the filet mignon med and it was brought out well done and when I mentioned it to the waitress she was very accommodating and replaced it. The girls had chopped steak and I believe shrimp dish. Everything was delicious my steak was great!! Oh, and on Friday nights the have a catfish fry and we got several samples of the catfish and it was great not greasy at all- if your there on Friday night give it a try and it comes with several sides. I would highly recommend even if your not a meat eater they do offer other items on the menu. They also have a full bar!! Sorry no food pics we gobbled it up!! Perini's does it again!! We had a cousins reunion in Abilene this weekend and decided to end it with brunch at Perini's. We've been here several times in the past, but it's been 20 years since we had Sunday lunch. Thankfully, the concept is still the same. You go through the buffet line and serve your own salad and vegetables (the corn, green beans, black-eyed peas and mashed potatoes with cream gravy would make my grandma proud). The friendly gentleman on the line serve your biscuit, chicken fried steak and fried chicken (the chicken is on-the-bone and you can ask for your favorite piece; they also serve livers and gizzards!) The guys are very cordial and not stingy with the food. The CFS isn't the best I've ever had, but very good for a buffet...very tender. The country gravy is spot-on! You also get a dessert with the buffet...chocolate sheet cake (excellent), bread pudding (excellent) and strawberry shortcake (OK...they serve a biscuit instead of Angel food or pound cake). I ordered the 16 oz ribeye, green Chili / bacon hominy, along with a fresh garden salad with homemade roll. I can tell you , I would have never ordered the hominy without a little coaxing from the waitress and a prior recommendation from a friend, but I'm glad I did ! Having already eaten at the top steakhouse in Texas according to Texas Monthly (2011 article), I led a delegation from my car club in Austin up to Perini Ranch on a recent weekend.This no frills joint came in a number three on that list. The restaurant is basically a converted barn; heck I've got one that looks quite similar to it on my ranch! A career change in my future perhaps? Seriously, the difference in decor versus number one Pappas Bros. Steakhouse is a full 180. Fine dining versus a working cattle ranch with rusty corrugated tin roof, mismatched tables, and doors straight out of an Ace Hardware nearby. I think the neon sign to the left of the entrance might be the newest part of the entire building. I appreciate both restaurants because they can cook some serious steak! Perini uses USDA top choice (wet aged) instead of Prime along with it's signature rub. My 16 ounce rib-eye was perfectly medium rare on our visit. Steaks were paired with a generous salad and sourdough rolls. Sides unlike it's more expensive competition are only $4! The Zucchini Perini was thin sliced rounds with a tomato based rich pork and beef sauce topped with cheese. I also ordered jalapeno bites for the table with excellent results. You won't find fussy at Perini. If they had white table cloths they would be grey from the smoke from the grill. Interior walls and even the mini spit air conditioners had a glaze of smoke from years of cooking. Here is why I'm awarding them a full 5 stars. On a trip to the #1 steakhouse awhile back which has an allegedly enforced dress code they seated a family next to my wife and I dressed in jogging suits that reeked of moth balls after a cold snap in Houston. Basically, they failed to live up to certain expectations of a fine dining experience despite the elegantly prepared appetizers, high end steaks, and top notch wine list. Perini on the other hand delivered on all cylinders being true to it's image as a steakhouse in a shack on a working cattle ranch. Prices were reasonable; staff friendly and even didn't groan when we wanted separate checks. If I was standing on the porch of the main ranch house in Driftwood and had my choice of steaks on the TM list; I'd have no problem heading north west without hesitation. read more

Made reservations here for Christmas Eve dinner since my husband had been telling me I needed to try the burger here. SERVICE - Our reservations were at 8pm but we came in around 720pm because we came directly after mass. The hostess was so friendly and got us a table early. Our server was Braden and he was a fantastic server! He was so polite, always filled our water, and was quick with any requests. Back to the hostess, she came around at the end of our dinner and asked how our meal was. The staff was phenomenal here! FOOD Complimentary Bread Basket - The rolls came out warm. Outside was crispy and the inside was nice and soft. The basil butter was really tasty! Today Show Award Winning Burger - I am always skeptical when restaurants call certain dishes award winning. I've been to restaurants that have had those claims and they definitely did not live up to the hype so needless to say, I had the "we will see" mindset when ordering this burger. When I took my first bite, it instantly changed to "Okay, they fully deserve this award". The burger was delicious! The meat was so juicy and the way their grilled it, it had a slight crisp char crust that gave it a little crunch. The bread had a slight sweetness to it, which complimented the meat so well. I have to say, this burger is now one of the burgers on the top of my list for favorites. Well deserved award for this tasty burger! Ribeye - We just had ribeye the other night at the Mill so I was not really enthused to try this. My husband cut me a piece and wow. The meat was packed full of flavor. It was so juicy and tender. Every bite was magical. Nothing at all like the one at the Mill. I told my husband "So this is what a ribeye should taste like". Bread Pudding - My mother in law insisted that we tried it because she said it was very good. I've had my fair share of bread pudding. Some great and some terrible. This one landed on the great list! It was very tasty. A little on the sweeter side though. The service and the food here was incredible. My wife and I frequently come here and usually get pretty good food and service. I recommend the Bone in Ribeye and the Ranch Burger. The Poblano Mac & Cheese is one of my wife's favorites but they rarely keep that as a side option unfortunately. The service is usually OK. Tonight we had Amy and the service was far from stellar. She failed to mention what the specials were but we did catch it from a different waitress - after we had already placed our orders. One of our sides was missing when the food arrived but towards the end of the meal it came. I'll be honest I was expecting great service and food. Like top notch because of all the reviews! But our experience was pretty mediocre. We had reservations but still waited 30 minutes. Which was ok because we were so excited to try the steak & quail. Our waitress was efficient but not really warm and friendly. It seems like everyone was scrambling. It was definitely lacking that hometown feel that the reviews spoke of. There was a wedding on the property that night and so maybe that affected the quality of service. I'm not sure. We had the quail appetizer, which came out warm, not hot, and all three of our other side dishes came out fairly warm. The steak my husband ordered was pretty tough for a ribeye. Definitely not buttery, smooth or anything like the reviews stated. For the price I was just hoping for better. We were really hoping to have somewhere to invite our family to eat when they come in town since we will be new to the area. We will definitely be back to give it another try though! I guess it's time to review Perini's. I've been eating here for over 20 years. They have a great set up out in the country where you can kick back and enjoy yourself. In the evening, when it's not 100 degrees, there's nothing better than sitting outside with the fire pits and soft lights. You'd love it, especially if there's a cold drink in your hand. They can take care of that! Through the years, the food has always been good, as the prices have gone up, up, up. They are so popular, it's usually really busy, and really loud, and the waitstaff can be overwhelmed. I definitely recommend you make reservations. Today was a very good visit. Our 11:00 reservation for the Sunday Buffet was before the crowds hit. The food was fresh and hot. Our waitress had plenty of time to check on us. The Sunday Buffet is meal, drink, and dessert for $17.95. A great price for some really good food. Check the pictures. As we left, it was getting really busy. We've been wanting to try Perini Ranch for a while and it did not disappoint! We started off with the quail legs and they were just as delicious as everyone else said they were on here. For our meals, we got the prime rib which came with a side of horseradish and a starter "ranch salad." The salad was amazing; it had the best ranch dressing. Then the prime rib came out, it was a huge slice and cooked to a perfect medium rare, with the nice crust around the edges. The horseradish served on the side was subtle unlike most you would make/buy. It complemented it so well! For my steak, I tried the 8 oz filet and opted for a caprese salad before my steak. The caprese salad was so fresh and refreshing. The steak was a perfect medium rare, very tender and juicy. I also got the blue cheese butter on top and they put it on the side and that was perfect with the steak. If you like blue cheese, highly recommend. For sides, we got cowboy potatoes and green chili hominy. Both were delicious complements to our meals. Highly recommend the cowboy potatoes. And of course we had to try dessert! Both of us tried the bread pudding. It was the perfect serving for one person and you could definitely tell it was homemade sourdough bread used for the pudding. Please try this if you go! The atmosphere is like a lot of other steakhouses in Texas, an old Texas feel. Casual attire is fine! I can also see why they say reservations are recommended because the restaurant fills up fast! Pricing is a little pricy for the steaks, but our experience with the food taught us that you got what you paid for! When we're in West Texas, we like to stop at Perini's for lunch. We started out with Quail Legs since I like to try new foods. It was pretty good. I was expecting the little kick that the menu stated but there wasn't one. I had the filet (medium rare). It was a good steak. Very tender but I expected it to be juicier. It was rather dry. When I cut into a steak, you expect it to be juicy. I ordered the side of Green Chile Hominy. It was good but felt it had more chile than hominy. We upgraded the salad to Caesar. I would not do that again. Salad just tasted like oil and it needed salt. My husband had the build your own burger with kettle chips. His burger was excellent! The sourdough bun was awesome. Next time we're in town, I'm getting the burger. It's half the price of the steak and is freaking good. read more

On a girls trip to Abilene, the 'host' took us to Perini's Steakhouse for lunch. The place was just what you would expect from an in-the-country Texas steakhouse. Rustic, friendly, indoor/outdoor seating, everything smells of smoke / meats. They had a great menu of drinks/cocktails, plus any TX-themed grilled item you could want (chicken, steak, quail, burgers). We had the quail legs, burgers & mesquite grilled chicken. We also had the potatoes and green beans for sides. Everything was very tasty! I wouldn't say it was the best i've ever had, but it did not disappoint. The overall atmosphere felt very country/Texan. One of the worst steak dinners I've ever had! Yes even the old dairy cow served in Pennsylvania was better than Perini! At least the old dairy cow was served hot! We love to come out on a summer evening and sit outside on their back patio for a nice dinner or for a Sunday lunch featuring their chicken fried steak. Their jalapeño bites, zucchini perini, and their seasonal vegetable of "poblano mac and cheese" are must try's. This is a steakhouse and their steaks are pricey, but the rest of their menu is so reasonable for the quality. $11 to build your own burger, and it's about $14 for their catfish plate. You can't skip dessert at Perini's since they have their award winning bread pudding and their great-grandmother's strawberry shortcake. The restaurant is very clean and inviting. Raven very excellent. The steak was cooked perfectly, The only complaint was it was a little bland. Honorable mention of the pickles, they are delicious. Disclosure: I have visited Perini Ranch 3 times. Perini Ranch is a steakhouse, dude ranch, catering company based in historic Buffalo Gap, TX. Their steakhouse is known for using real mesquite wood to grill their steaks vs. broilers. It's a charming place that serves great food while being 100% Texan. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - As soon as you drive into the ranch, you're met with a huge armadillo statue. If you didn't know you were in west Texas, you do now. There are no paved parking lots - just gravel lined with F150s and Silverados. The steakhouse itself looks like a shack on the outside, but inside you're met with nice country woods, a beautiful courtyard used for events, and some down home customers looking for good meal. Its Texas charm is undeniable. 1 Star. Service - My last visit was a Sunday lunch, where their lunch menu is accompanied by their "chicken" buffet (more on that later). Unfortunately on this visit, our service was so slow. You would think that a buffet would help move things along, but drink refills never came, our desert order came well after the meal was completed, and the check took some time. Sure, Texas can be laid back, but this was simply not good. Since my previous visits were good, I'll give some credit. 1/2 Star. Food - I come for the steak. Let's get that out of the way. While Perini Ranch uses choice vs. prime beef, their mesquite wood and seasoning add so much flavor it's worth it. I ordered as rib eye that was perfectly grilled complete with perfect waffle grill marks. I'm not sure what is in their dry rub, but it complements the beef flavor so well. The bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers were also great. The bacon was perfect, and the heat from the jalapenos were balanced by cream cheese. The buffet items were very good, but not great. Chicken was flavorful but some of it dried out on the buffet. Sides (mashed potatoes and corn) were good additions. They also had chicken fried steak but I didn't try it. However, their steak is king. 1 1/2 Star. Will I Return? - Yes! I don't get out to West Texas this often, but my last two visits included detours to Perini Ranch. There's no doubt that all future visits to Abilene will include this stop. It's a great steakhouse whose charm and atmosphere will elevate and provide an amazing experience that is 100% Texas. 1 Star. My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts): 1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm. 1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point. 2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it's really all about the food. 1 Star - Will I come back? - If I know for a fact I'll return, I'll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return. Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. Another well traveled coworker, Robert, recommend this place when my group made a work trip to Abilene. So we gave it a try. A little tough to find with the directions we had but, we found it. What a sight to see in the middle of the night. White Xmas lights strung up everywhere to illuminate the parking lot. The main building in a glow as well. The building is really an old ranch house. When I called, I was told it wasn't needed that night since it was slow weeknight but, I imagine it gets real busy on the weekends. A quick browse of the menu and I knew what I wanted. :-) The 16oz Ribeye, aka Tom's Choice, accompanied by Old Fashioned Green Beans & Cowboy Potatoes. We started with a couple appetizers of Jalapeño Bites ... fresh Jalapeños, stuffed with cream cheese, wrapped in bacon and cooked to a crispy perfection. These were so good and had the perfect tasty bite to them! Once the steaks arrived, it was like biting into heaven! Robert was right, and he usually is. ;-) That first bite just melted in my mouth. I had the quail legs as an appetizer, bleu cheese chopped salad, ribeye steak, and twice baked potato casserole. It was delicious. The service was great and the waitress was attentive. She offered recommendations which we appreciated. The ambiance is very rustic but can be intimate.
