The service provided today by server Madelyn F. was great. However, the food took well over 30 minutes to come out of the kitchen and our server apologized for the very long wait and offered us complimentary pie, muffins or cookies. We did take two muffins for our longer than usual wait but we took them to go. The Pot roast was very tasty but there were far too many onions in with the peas and carrots. I actually ate the dinner salad with ranch and was very satisfied more than the pot roast. We visited this location on Labor day weekend for a Saturday lunch. We would definitely stop here again as they are the biggest Perkins I have ever dined in. They did have plenty of staff and management on as well but the kitchen staff were very slow and couldn't keep up. Thank you. read more

I had not been to a Perkins in years. I was in the mood for something quick, healthy and light - although sometimes those do not go together. This Perkins happened to be near where I was staying, so I figured, why not? Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from start to finish. Service was lackluster, and the food quality was surprisingly poor. It took an unusually long time to get seated despite the restaurant being mostly empty, and paying on the way out somehow took just as long. The food itself was atrocious. Everything seemed lukewarm at best, and the asparagus tasted like it had been sitting out for quite a while. Overall, not a good experience and not somewhere I would recommend. read more

We love Perkins but will never go back to this one in Brookings again! We were a party of 7 and although it wasn't busy, we were told our wait would be 20 minutes because they had to clean the back room. The server placed our drinks on the table by grabbing them all from the tops. We had to ask for straws, not wanting to drink out of the glasses that her hands were all over. The omelets looked to be half the size that they normally are and had very little ingredients in them. The sides of hash browns were also about half the normal portion. The pancakes were also smaller than usual, thin, hard and cold. We had to ask for butter which wouldn't melt on the cold pancakes anyway, and the syrup dispenser was sticky. I ordered the Southwest Cajun chicken salad. What a disaster! There was maybe an ounce of chicken and it was not blackened Cajun. It also was missing the tortilla strips and avocado. When I told the server, she brought out a glop of avocado with some tortilla strip crumbs. (See photo!) When we mentioned that we were disappointed, the server replied with "Yeah, I don't know what happened." Poor customer service and the server was clearly not trained on how to check food before serving or how to handle customer complants. Nobody was seating customers this morning. I waited at the hostess stand for a while before someone saw me. I was finally seated and the guys at the next table were extremely loud using foul language talking about how much they could drink etc.... I am fine people should talk the way they want, but this was disruptive and remember this is Perkins FAMILY restaurant. Most of the restaurant was empty. A solution could have been kindly ask that group to move in a tactful manner or start seating. Others away from them. Thankfully I didn't have my family with me. The other patrons there seemed uncomfortable as well. I got my everything omelette breakfast and it had an enormous amount of cheese in it. There is no way that is the recommended amount of cheese they put on an omelette unless someone asks for quadruple the amount of cheese. Hashbrowns were below Average, pancakes were fine. I ate less than half my food. My bill was approximately $26.00 with an 18% tip. My waitress was very friendly. They open at 6:00 am and it was the only place that served breakfast I could find. I am an early riser. I am here for two more days. With no other options, I will be searching out gas station food and will not be back. read more

Poor service; great food: The waitress never brought the appetizer I ordered, forgot the side of ranch, we had to ask for silverware, and ask twice for the muffin. She also got our ticket wrong, adding extra coffees and not adding the milk (maybe it was because the coffee and mlk were the same price??) However, the food was excellent and the wait time for food was reasonable. The food was hot, flavorful, and plentiful. The restaurant was very clean. I have been to Perkins in Brookings SD 3 times in the past few months the staff are nice and friendly.

Bad experience in this location, first off we asked the waitress for silverware but waited awhile my husband ended up getting our own silverware so we can stir our coffee,second how can you ran out of rice and mashed and baked potatoes when it's only 5:00 pm, and the soup and salad was served with our meal when asked to serve it first, third the meal was cold not even warm and the noodles stuck together. Probably my worst Perkins experience ever. Start with a waitress who only came to the table to 1. take order, 2. bring drinks, 3. we grabbed her as she walked by to ask for ice in our water, 4. brought water with 3 cubes of ice, 5 brought bill. Food took an inordinate amount of time to come to table- finally was brought to the table by manager-type person. The soggy salad came 30 seconds before the "hot" food which had clearly been sitting on a counter for some time-- lukewarm and kind of crusty. She also refilled my cup that had been by the edge of the table empty for about 15 minutes. Broccoli had a long hair in it- served to my husband with a buzz cut, so we know it wasn't his. We would have told the waitress, but she was never there. We were there for lunch that ended up taking over an hour and half. As we checked out, the manager-type person at the counter was probably aware of our experience, because we were not asked the traditional "how was everything?" and when I asked for a comment card she said I could google it. Disgusting flavor.... ordered the chicken fried steak and when waitress brought it over she slid it over and my food slid off the plate I had to catch it! Mashed potatoes were hard and lumpy. Solid family restaurant. Servers run the gamut from outstandingly awesome to pathetically incompetent. Small Human consistently orders the kids eggs, hash browns and toast plate because she knows what she likes and they rarely screw it up. The rest of the humans are only occasionally disappointed in our orders but the staff usually goes above and beyond to put things right. read more

Perkins has been in town forever, and for a very long time you had few local dining options other than Perkins, the Ram, fast food or pizza. In all of those years Perkins has remained consistent. Pretty good food, good service, fair prices, and generally clean dining rooms and restrooms. I still tend to think of Perkins in the context of being a breakfast all-day sort of place, where I can get a big stack of pancakes with a variety of syrups next to some bacon and eggs regardless if it is 10am or 10pm. However they do make other items that are usually pretty darn good too. I will also confess that I have also relied on them to make a pumpkin or apple pie or some muffins for holidays and events. Perkins is not a made from scratch place with a 4 star chef in the kitchen, nor do their menu prices reflect that. They are a reliable franchise eatery that has stood the test of time in this area and for good reason. I suspect years from now there will still be kids coloring on place mats as adults peruse the menu. Plus I hear now days they are open all night, which doesn't apply to me but in a community that has several factories and an active night life, that's probably a good thing. read more

A few weekends ago, I was passing through Brookings and decided to take my son and his girlfriend out for breakfast. We filled up our coffee cups with coffee from the lobby after we were seated as both my son's girlfriend and I wanted just a little warm-up - not a whole huge pot of coffee. The manager at the time followed my son back to our table and then proceeded to loudly SCOLD us for getting coffee from the lobby. He told us that was "only for guests" (I'm pretty sure we were "guests") and that we we not to get coffee from the lobby. Guests from several other tables were staring at us as he was very loud, rude and insensitive. I have never been treated so horribly at a restaurant. He then proceeded to tell us that our server would be charging us for coffee and would be bringing us a pot of it. When she arrived (bless her heart), she looked embarrassed and just said - "I was told to offer you this pot of coffee." I told her we didn't want it. I ordered a $10 breakfast that came with about half the amount of food that my hometown Perkins serves - but that's another story. After our food came, she stopped over and said that she was not going to charge us for the coffee and then apologized for her manager's behavior and said he doesn't have the best "people skills". I'm not sure why this person is in the service industry. I should have asked his name but I did not - he was of small stature with reddish hair. As my son is a college student, we visit Perkins often. It's too bad this experience was marred by poor behavior on the manager's part. read more

This place had decent waiters the last time I was there, but the food was just not that great.

After a long drive from Rapid City two Saturdays ago with the last hour driving through a huge storm from Sioux Falls, we were tired and hungry by the time we got the Brookings at 11 pm. We decided to stop at Perkins because the McDonald's drive thru wasn't really an option for us and we were so glad we did. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our server was quite pleasant. We both ordered breakfast. The food came out fairly quickly and I was really happy with what I ordered, a BBQ Breakfast Burrito with hash browns and my boyfriend ordered a traditional breakfast, eggs, sausage, hash browns and toast. He liked his and I just loved mine. The meat in my burrito was a heaping portion of the most delicious, tender, perfectly seasoned pulled pork paired with deliciously gooey cheesy, perfectly scrambled eggs and it was BIG. The hash browns were cooked perfectly too. My meal exceeded my expectations. It was a great way to end a somewhat stressful trip back. Thank you Perkins! read more

I rarely go to Perkins because there are so many other restaurants in town. My experience today validated my reasons of why I only go there when my grandparents are in town. I called to ask if they have carry out orders and if I could place one. When I asked, I received a snarky answer about how they do. I placed a simple order for two fries for my great aunt and I. The acting manager, Denise, didn't give me a time frame or the cost. I requested for a wait time with another snarky response. When I arrived, I wasn't even greeted with a hello. I requested two slices of pie to be included. I felt like I asked for another order. Not only did she not acknowledge my request but gave me a nasty look after the request. Once I got the order filled and paid, she could barely manage to say thanks nor did she offer a to give me a receipt. I could have asked for one, but after my experience I just wanted to leave. Yes, everyone had bad days and maybe Denise had a terrible day but that doesn't mean you have the right to be ugly to paying customers and try to ruin people's days. I would avoid Perkins and their poor customer service. I would recommend supporting a local restaurant who offers better customer service. read more

This place is the go to for late night snacks or early morning breakfasts. All of the items from the bakery tastes fresh and delicious. Staff is nice approachable and polite. My waiter, Ellie, did a fantastic job helping me find what to choose on the menu and kept a keen eye on our drinks as to keep them full. During busy hours they do an adequate jobs keeping the line moving and people coming in and out. Overall I would defiantly come back! read more
