Had a wonderful family day today picking apples at Perry Lowe Orchards in Moravian Falls. Perfect weather, so many apple varieties, lots of stuff to entertain kids, etc. Not only are they affordable, but it's set up as a great family oriented experience. We saw so many different varieties of families from just friends & couples, to multi-generational families like ours. The young people who work here were patient and kind to all. The store by the orchard was spotless with two restrooms inside and two port-a-potties outside. Besides picking apples, they had a slide and play area for kids ($5 wristband, unlimited), a little trolley painted like bumblebees, and an apple cannon. The store had packaged mixes, local honey, and different varieties of cider. Their freshly made apple cider donuts and apple fritters were delicious but the warm apple cider (not pictured) warmed my soul and body. Visited the farm for apple picking this weekend and had a great time. My kids are older, so we didn't do any of the playground activities. The ride out to pick was gorgeous. The staff is very helpful in directing you where to pick and they have an Apple washing station for you to enjoy 1 Apple while picking. We also enjoyed the Apple fritters they sell in the barn. read more

If you have never been to an apple orchard, this is the place for you. If you have been to an apple orchard already, this is still the place for you. As long as you like apples, all of your core dreams will come true. Admittedly, my expectations were perry low at first, but when I got to the orchard and discovered there were so many fun things (from a giant slide to a playground to apple launching), I was pleasantly surprised. We discovered this amazing orchard and have gone twice this year. It is expansive with sweeping views and a huge variety of apples. They sell THE BEST Apple fritters I think I have ever had, as well as their pink lady cider which is so smooth and unique in flavor. This winds up being a fairly expensive outing no matter how you cut it, the apple bags are pricey and you'll definitely want the baked goods, cider and slushy. They also charge for their small playground which is kind of a cash grab in my book- but the quality of everything is pretty good and for a once in a while outing, this is one of the nicest apple orchards I have been to. read more

We've been twice now, and it is well worth the hour drive from Winston! The pink lady apples in particular are a must! They also offer ciders, slushes, fritters, donuts, and jams/sauces among other items as well! The apple cannon is fun to try, too! Pick your own is up at the top of the mountain, so keep in mind to drive up. The store at the bottom is also worth checking out, and they offer Amish butter, meats, ciders including a hard cider, and artisan cutting boards! Everything here is so good and affordable too! What are the first three words that come to your mind when you think about autumn/fall? If you said "pumpkins", "leaves", or "cool weather", then you are not alone. Indeed, those were the top 3 answers of the 30 people I asked. I've got another word for you--one that is oft overlooked but is as fall as anything. And it lends a comforting, aromatic, tasty, and somewhat romantic feel to fall. Apples. And you don't have to go far from the piedmont triad--only an hour or so-- to find fresh, delicious, NC grown apples. Sure, you could go to a farmers market--I go myself--but this way you get a beautiful drive through our beautiful state and purchase the freshest apples available. The Brushy Mountains, located in Alexander, Caldwell, Iredell, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties-- have the perfect climate for growing apples, escaping not only the heat of the piedmont but also the frequent blossom-killing cold of the high country. And October, the heart of autumn, is the peak of apple season. A couple of orchards I highly recommend (for similar and different reasons) if you make an apple excursion are Perry Lowe Orchards and Sugarloaf Orchards. Perry Lowe is "cuter" and more commercialized whereas Sugarloaf is more Spartan and straightforward. Both offer fresh, tasty, NC grown apples as well as a few other items. You can find varieties here that are familiar to you as well as some you may have never heard of. The prices are better than any grocery store or farmers market, especially when you consider the freshness. Currently I am working my way through a bag of Cortland, a delicious McIntosh descendant with the purest white flesh you've ever seen, and a bag of Virginia Beauty, which are actually rather ugly but possess that "old fashioned" apple taste I enjoy. Mid October should mark the arrival of what I consider to be pome perfection: Goldrush. This descendant of Golden Delicious has everything you could ever want in an apple. Definitely try this one on your trip. So take a ride to the brushy mountains. Enjoy the beautiful fall leaves and bucolic vistas our state has to offer. After learning that the Wilkesboro area is known for its apples, I knew I wanted some, and Perry Lowe Orchards came up first while driving down Highway 16, so I turned in and decided to pay them a visit. Apples galore inside. There were tons of varieties available, over 10 at least. There were descriptions for most of the kinds but they actually offer samples so you can try some varieties you may not be as familiar with. The woman I interacted with was friendly and pointed me to some apple options for the purposes I had in mind. The peck and bushel terminology always confuses me but at any rate, I selected some bags of apples to take home after thinking too long and too hard about which apples to get. You could even buy cider, slushies, and dried apples, and even some other produce like garlic, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes. I bought a couple of sweet potatoes that were delish. Who doesn't love apple picking? Since the weather finally turned cooler, my fiancé and I decided it would be a great time to go pick some apples in the mountains! It had been years since I had gone, so we sort of just took a chance on Perry Lowe Orchards, since it was not too far away. It turned out to be a wonderful choice! From Winston-Salem, Perry Lowe Orchards is right at a one hour drive, and a very easy one at that. When you get there, you will see the store right on the side of the road, however, if you want to pick apples, you will actually take the small nearby road up to the farm itself. There is a very nice parking lot right at the barn, and they have a great set up with picnic tables, some games, and a few props for taking pictures. Inside the barn is where you pay to pick apples and get the size bag you would like. We paid and then hoped onto the trailer to take a nice short tractor ride to the area where the apple trees are. They are set up perfectly for amateur apple pickers, with multiple types of apples in rows right beside each other with signs on the end so you know what type you are picking. Our tractor driver stayed there the entire time and was happy to answer questions and even took multiple pictures for the various groups that we were with. After everyone had filled their bags of apples it was time to take the tractor ride back. When we returned we took a look through the small store in the barn. They have t-shirts, hats, and more importantly cider, apple fritters, and apple donuts! The apple donuts were FANTASTIC, as was the apple cider slushy! We shared one of each and sat on the picnic tables admiring the scenery! Overall it was a great little trip, and we cannot recommend Perry Lowe enough! read more

We visited here on Labor Day weekend, 2021. This was our first apple orchard visit of the season, with others planned. We bought a 10 lb. bag of Ginger Gold apples, which I dearly love from the orchards in Georgia in prior years. We bought a fresh cider is a gallon plastic jug and a gallon glass jug of shelf-stable cider. Of about 30 apples in the bag, four were edible because the rest were brown inside. When I say edible I don't mean delicious; the four apples were soft, mealy and tasteless. Perhaps they did not know that they were selling spoiled apples. No matter. There are plenty of other orchards in the region. Unfortunately , both gallons of cider were disappointing. Their cider is sweet enough and has an apple taste, but rather weak, and it reminded me of Mott's apple juice. I waited to write this until I had tasted cider from other orchards, just to be sure that my ability to appreciate good cider might have taken a tumble. Nope, other orchards sell cider that is far and away more complex and pleasing than this stuff. Oh, and, granted, it has been a tough year for apple orchards, with the late freeze and all, but that does not excuse the disappointing products sold by Perry Lowe when other orchards seem to be able to put out abundant amounts of good quality apples and cider. read more

The best apples in North Carolina come from Perry Lowe Orchards. They have a wide variety, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly and the apples are kept in refrigeration so we buyers get the freshest, crispest tasting apples. My brother and I try to get to their store at least once a year (we're three hours away from Moravian Falls), and it's worth the trip for a bushel or two. read more
