What a cool find! Friends brought us to "The Amish deli" for lunch; but it was so much more! They have an amazing deli. Delicious sandwiches on home baked bread, which we ate in big comfy chairs on the front porch. But it is also a step back in time. We wandered around the General Store, looking at the jars of jellies and pickles, bags of noodles, loaves of homemade bread, and so many other items. Today was my first visit to this amazing general store which appears to be owned and operated by an Amish family or group. When you walk in you are immediately overwhelmed by the vast variety and unique collection of food items available for purchase. Every type of flour for baking, seasonings, flavorings, honey, honey combs, canned goods, fresh made breads, candy, desserts, free range chicken eggs, spices, soups, Amish wear, and even a deli so you can enjoy a meal on their front porch. I even noticed several homeopathic herbal remedies such as elderberry syrup. Small shopping carts are available at the front door making shopping easier and more enjoyable. We purchased several items but I was most excited to find free range chicken eggs very reasonably priced. It's definitely a destination store but easily located using gps and certainly worth the trip. read more

Everything about Shiloh General Store is very unique, and the staff are very friendly and professional.

We recently heard about this place from several local people who suggested we check it out. We did some exploring in the area and then made our way to the General Store. When we arrived you could tell this was a hidden gem, there were quite a few people/cars/motorcycles in the parking lot and people sitting on the porch eating their treats. The store was very busy with many people strolling through the aisles. There was also a short line in the to-go sandwich order area. They have many different items, cold drinks, nuts, sauces, breads, baked goods, jams, jellies, and basic frozen meats like sausage and bacon. We left with a few waters and a small package of their pumpkin bread. My wife thought the pumpkin bread was just okay but we will come back when we are in the area next time. Rolls and Deli meats and cheeses always fresh and reasonable. Great service, impeccably clean and great selection of handpackaged grains, huge variety of candies, yummy baked goods, frozen and canned goods from various small brands, in addition to cutlery and kitchen goods. We love to make a sandwich, or buy one that they make fresh, sit on the ample, comfortable porch, watch the horses across the street and enjoy the fresh air. The drive there and back is scenic and open, farms and a view of the foothills interesting in any weather. A rejuvenating, relaxing and productive outing just 30 miles from home! We visited this place today and it has been on my to see list for a long time. We didn't get their sandwiches which are clearly super popular by the huge lines of people waiting to order them and eating them on the huge porch but we explored their huge array of shelf items. The store is big but a lot of the stuff they're selling doesn't fit the bill for an Amish market. A lot of random stuff and the prices were relatively high on everything. I'd say at least a quart of the stuff they're selling is not Amish made if not far more. We bought an array of baked goods, butter and some candies to try at home later. I'm hoping they're good. Don't remember how we found out about this gem but we love it. At least once a month we take a trip to Elkin to hike part of the MST from Grassy Creek Winery to Carter Falls and we always stop here on the way. Amazing Amish store with glorious baked goods. They usually have 4 or 5 types of fresh bread, rolls, cinnamon rolls and if you get there early enough on Saturday you can get the hot doughnuts. They have all kinds of snacks, jams and jellies. They also have cheeses, local meats, Amish pies and the like. The best thing are the made to order sandwiches. Piled high with boars head meats and all kinds of fixins. Pick up a Sammie and head over to Grassy Creek Winery and hike to Carter Falls for lunch then come back and enjoy a bottle. read more

Never got around to trying the Deli which was a mistake because it's great. Been here a number of times over the years but never got around to ordering something prepared in the Deli. Have ordered Deli Meat, Fresh Bread etc but never one of their sandwiches. Reason why was we were going elsewhere for lunch, had already had lunch etc. Today I was solo so decided to try the Deli. Walked back and you fill out a little card with your order. Options are printed above so not that hard. I chose a Ham on Wheat with Onion, Spicy Mustard and bit of Horseradish and turned in my card, You also get a bag of Chips with the Order You pay at the front and you can do it after you order or after you pick up your sandwich. I chose to go ahead and pay then and forgot about the chips but no big deal. Trying to lose weight and didn't need the chips anyway. Name was called and I walked out on the porch and found a nice chair to sit in on the expansive porch and opened up my sandwich. I had forgotten what a good Ham Sandwich tastes like. This Sandwich took me back before we ate so much fast food. Not mass produced and it actually had taste and character. Very fresh and no taste of preservatives. The tail tail give away was the onions. These were nice and crisp and were not the prepared two hours before we open and stuck in a bin, limp and devoid of anything fresh that you normally find. I have absolute loved watching this business expand and grow through the years. My family and I have been coming here my whole life and we commonly refer to it as "the Amish store". One of my absolute favorite things to do is go here and grab a sandwich, maybe some baked goods, and head out for a picnic! There are picnic tables outside at the church next door. You can also take your picnic up to a local winery (there are several within 15 minutes of here). The staff here are so friendly and I love everything about this store! If you can, you have to get there EARLY on a weekend morning to grab a dozen of their *homemade donuts*. The donuts are absolutely incredible! The word is getting out which is great, but it has gotten significantly more crowded so expect a crowd when you go. read more

We go to the general store every time we are in Hamptonville NC This time we were overcharged. I ordered ONE SANDWICH with ONE DRINK along with a number of other items I was charged for 3 Sandwiches & 2 Drinks. I did not look at the receipt till I got home We will not be going back. Was this just an honest mistake or something else. If you chose to shop here count your change and definitely check your receipt. I wish I had know about this place sooner! We came out this direction for a scouting event and found Shiloh General Store on Yelp. Luckily I read all the reviews because just one mentioned the doughnuts and that was all it took for me to make this a stop. They opened at 9:00-ish. The hours posted say 9:00am but they were a little late the day we were there. No biggie. The crowd of people gathering told me this was going to be good. The crowd all made a quick left just inside to the bakery/deli area where bags of 6 warm glazed doughnuts were being handed out to guests. People were taking two and three bags a piece then immediately heading to the register to pay. They are 6 for $3.50. If you've ever had Britts doughnuts in Carolina Beach this is the closest you can get to that without the drive. Warm, soft pillows of goodness! So good with just the right amount of chew. While waiting in line for my precious bag of goodness, I checked out the fresh loaves of bread bagged on the rack. What?!? Warm fresh bread also! Of course one of those beautiful loaves hopped into my basket. We browsed the store and decided we would go eat our doughnuts while they were warm and come back later for a sandwich from the deli on some of that fresh bread. This is a very interesting place - a well stocked general store featuring a lot of authentic Amish food items (and some not so authentic), and a very nice deli as well. Shiloh General Store is operated by members of the New Order Amish Community that was founded around 1980 in the Hamptonville/Union Grove area. They offer meat and cheeses from Troyer's County Market in Millersburg, Ohio, and additional products from other small Amish businesses in Ohio. They have a variety of canned goods, pickled vegetables, relishes, jams, jellies, flour, grains, baked goods, candy, a few frozen items (meat pies), and more. The deli sandwiches are very nice, though the variety available is a bit limited - we chose Roast Beef and Ham & Cheese, both very good! But best of all, they have hand rolled Amish butter, and it has a great old fashioned butter taste - the kind of taste the butter had that my grandmother bought from the "egg & butter" man's truck in the late 1940's and early 1950's. The process calls for the very best cream, and the end product is hand rolled and packaged. This approach allows for a very even distribution of butter fat, and thus the great taste throughout! This butter alone is worth a visit here! read more

This was such a great find! I have always admired Amish baking and was curious of places that sold goods to do it with. Little did I know this gold mine of all things Amish was just a 30 minute drive( and a beautiful one at that) Location. It is basically halfway between Winston and Boone. It sits across from a beautiful horse farm and the signage is good. You really can't miss it Atmosphere: Very inviting and the outside has loads of seating available so you can eat your goodjies before getting back on the road or eat your incredible deli sandwich ( I'll get to that in a moment) There are alot of aisles and it can get a little tight with a crowd but, it is really cute inside and out Bathrooms: yes I know an odd mention, but I had to give a shout out to a clean bathroom and well maintained The deli: this was a nice surprise to us. There is a station that you fill out a small order form and hand it to the amazing deli workers. They are quick and efficient...this is by far our favorite feature of this store! All deli meats, cheese, and bread is amish made and the bread is baked fresh in house. You can't beat that! I HIGHLY suggest the roast beef with cheddar, horseradish (I don't usually like horseradish but, I enjoy this one), with sweet red pepper jelly...you can buy any of these sandwich toppings for use at home like we ended up doing after tasting this. My top tip is get your sandwich first then go sit outside to enjoy before shopping The goods: Anything you can think of for Amish grocery they have it and more. You might be surprised at some items like the baking section...I had no idea there were so many different kinds of flour. Our favorite items are, the sugars,flour,red pepper jelly in the jar, definitely the fresh bread(get there early to get before it is gone!), and the ginger snaps... we are a big fan of getting our deli meat from there when possible. Very big store with a lot of hard to find foods and the ingredients that are also hard to find. This place was packed and almost everyone had something in their hands to buy. Very clean easy to navigate and the people were friendly had helpful. I believe there is also a sandwich step next door but we did not go in to see. Let me think of my favorite donuts.... Britt's Donuts in Carolina Beach, Hole in Asheville, and I always enjoy the Giant Amish doughnuts at the Dixie Classic Fair. On Saturday mornings at 9am, when Shiloh opens its doors, the crowd of 20 people on the front porch all rush to the hot Amish glazed doughnuts in white paper bags in their bakery area. For $3.50 you get a bag of 6 doughnuts that are hot, fresh, heavy yeast donuts with a light glaze. These things are addicting and very similar to the giant ones at the fair. And when you think about $7 for a whole dozen, they are cheaper than any donut shop around. We also got a hot loaf of sourdough bread and Amish roll butter, also fantastic. I'm from California originally, so I'm never impressed with anyone's sourdough, because it's never sour. This one wasn't either, but fresh hot bread is delicious no matter what flavor it is. The doughnuts are only available on Saturday mornings and are worth our 35 minute drive from Winston-Salem. read more

We stopped here on a rainy Saturday morning. It was my first time here but I went with others that have been here before. The store was more packed than usual and the parking lot was filled with cars. Cars were also parked along the street. We were about to park along the street when a car pulled out of the parking lot (yay!). Although the store was crowded there was still room for us to peruse the shelves while carrying a basket. In no time, our baskets were full of jams, pickles, seeds, and candy. When we finished walking down the aisles, we joined the long bakery/checkout line. The line was long but it moved fairly quickly (took ~20-25 min). When we reached the bakery, we made sure to order a few sandwiches and pick up some sourdough bread. The sandwiches are made to order - you fill out on a slip of paper what you want on your sandwich. We then proceeded to the check out. All of the employees we interacted with were friendly and helpful. We could barely wait until getting home to try all of the goodies. My favorites included the sourdough bread and ginger snaps! Other info: they have 2 single stall restrooms, prices are reasonable, they have numerous frozen and shelf-stable items to choose from, and go early on Saturdays in order to get a donut before they sell out. read more

I've lived in North Carolina for over forty years. I've traveled all over the state enjoying many wonderful places from our breathtaking mountain ranges like Blowing Rock, Linville Caverns, Tweetsie Railroad, various gem mines, the Biltmore House, and so much more across the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains--to the ocean shores with Kitty Hawk, Cape Look Out, Nags Head, the Jockey's Ridge State Park (which has the tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic coast,) Ocracoke, famous lighthouses, etc. The list goes on and on, BUT until recently, I'd never even heard of the quiet community of about thirty Amish families living near Hamptonville. Nor had I heard of this hidden gem: The Shiloh General Store! One of my dearest friends suggested the trip when she realized that I had never been. Out in the beautiful countryside, just after (or before, depending on which way you travel) the local fire department, an Amish Furniture store, and an Amish dairy store filled with vat pasteurized and non-homogenized products better than I've ever tasted before (products, also, kindly sold at Shiloh General Store,) Shiloh General Store sits Invitingly with it's covered porch and ample gravel parking lot (which seems to remain full all the time.) The super friendly staff are ready and waiting to assist. Products, both local and from other Amish communities, are stocked neatly on the vast shelves: Dehydrated goods, canned goods, fresh goods, and frozen. There is something for everyone. (I am in LOVE with the loose leaf tea they have with little bits of dehydrated fruit in the blend.) While absent are the bins of candies for children to collect into bags, there are plastic weighed-out containers for the choosing and a small section of toys for the kiddos. The store is very clean, fresh, and new--not like Ike Godsey's Store on the Waltons, but it still has the feel of days gone by. The highlights of the store are the deli and bakery. The prices are far less than any grocery store chain! The meat and cheese choices are ample. (Have you ever tried Amish Butter cheese? Yum yum!) The house baked goods are absolutely divine! (You have to go early to get the fresh baked jalapeño cheddar bread--so DO because it's epic! Or on Saturdays, be waiting on the front porch for the door to open if you'd like to grab a bag of warm fresh made donuts!) For under five dollars, one can order a deli sandwich and grab an included bag of chips from a selection of choices. Just adjacent to the deli counter, there is an island counter with napkins, plastic ware, etc--at the end of it, closest to the deli, is a cup of pens and a box of order forms. You can Pick your bread--white or wheat freshly baked homemade, pick your meat choice or salad mix choice (pimento cheese, chicken salad, tuna salad) or pulled pork, choose your cheese choice, pick condiments which includes horseradish as an option, dill pickle slices, relish, lettuce, tomato, onions. Sensational! When we went there the first time (yes, I've been back since--had to go again and will, now, frequently take new people who have never been before,) we were hungry; we ordered our sandwich first, grabbed our chips and paid. We went onto the porch and found a couple chairs (which are interestingly made from long lasting composite wood,) and we thoroughly enjoyed our sandwiches. Surprisingly, even though it was a 95° day, it was still cool on the porch with a nice breeze blowing. After lunch, we went back inside to shop! One thing that surprised me, my only disappointment, is that not all products sold are whole food items. What I mean is, you still have to read the labels. I was shocked to find hydrogenated oils, preservatives, food dyes, folic acid (enriched garbage) and other no-no's IMO in multiple packaged food products both shelved and frozen. BUT the store uses electricity, has a wonderful air conditioner warding off the summer heat, has clean restrooms with modern conveniences, and they take a credit or debit card (and have furniture made out of composite wood from the Amish furniture place up the road,) so I guess that's just the way things are in our age. For me, this didn't make the experience any less than 5 STARS. I definitely recommend you make Shiloh General Store a regular stop. (I mentioned the dairy: I will make the 50 minute trip from my city just to buy the half and half for our coffee and to buy more yogurt! It's that good! And while I'm there, even though I'm not choosing carbs like bread the rest of my days, I will have to have a deli sandwich!!! read more

I truly don't have a single negative thing to say about this place, except that I wish it was closer to my house! However, driving out in the country to Shiloh General Store really adds to the experience. When you come here, prepare to take a break from the hustle and bustle you may be accustomed to, and enjoy the simple nostalgia you'll find as soon as you arrive. The sandwiches on the fresh Amish bread will change your life. I've tried many of their offerings - ham, turkey, pimento cheese, even pulled pork - but for me, the chicken salad reigns supreme. I get mine with provolone cheese, lettuce, mayo, onions and pickles. You can taste the freshness in the ingredients. They use a simple but effective ordering system - you just circle your meat and cheese selections, along with your toppings on a printed sheet of paper and write your name! Shop around while they prepare your delicious sandwich. They sell an impressive array of local artisan products, some made in house. The Conrad & Hinkle pimento cheese is an essential! I am also partial to the lemon chess bars. You really can't go wrong here. There are lots of wineries in the area and it's a great place to pop in for lunch in between stops, or to grab some cheese, crackers and jams for a picnic. There's not a dining room, but feel free to grab one of the big chairs on the beautiful wrap around porch! It's all part of the experience, y'all! Be sure to grab a soda, I promise they taste better out of a glass bottle. If you arrive early on Saturday mornings, you'll catch them churning out their famous Amish donuts. Get there early because they are almost guaranteed to sell out. They are 100% worth the hype! The deli is amazing! I believe I spent about $7 for a tuna sandwich and chips (chips are included in the price). They do not skimp on the sandwich, the tuna was falling out of the sandwich, & I was loving every bit of it. I went Saturday around noon, there were a lot of people but the lines move fast. Things are a bit pricey which is to be expected when you go to an Amish store. I will say, I'm not too sure how legitimate the staff members are because some looked like they were just dressed Amish. They had plenty of desserts to chose from. From maple cinnamon rolls, whoopie pies, apple pies, & even shoo-fly pies! That's also just to name a few. I loved the variety of jams they have and my mom absolutely loved their honey. What they have for jams, honey, and even flavored popcorn is something you will not find at your local Walmart or Target. If you're able to make the drive to visit, I say do it. This store has become one of my favorite places to go. They have wonderful things for stockings at Christmas including soaps, lotions, cooking tools and the best teas and candies. Their home made jams and butters will make your morning toast special and they have absolutely the best bread to make it with. All of their baked goods are great. Whether you just want a sandwich or a full dinner their ingredients will never let you down. You will find the best prices on spices all of which are organic. The people are so nice.
