Having flown into town with just an hour before meeting a colleague for dinner -- and a full day of meetings the next day -- the concierge at my hotel tried to help me find a barber or stylist on short notice to clean up a month's worth of shag. Naturally, the hotel's salon was closed on Mondays. The hunt was on. We called another salon and three other hotels and they were all either closed or booked up. (What's with Mondays in Salt Lake City?) Finally, a young bellman suggested I walk up a couple of blocks to Perry's, where he gets his hair cut. "Really old school," he said as I was half-way out the door. Bingo. "Walk-ins When Possible" worked,and within 30 seconds I was sitting in Jerry's chair by the window, blinkered by the pop-culture cabinet-of-curio objects covering every vertical (and pretty much every horizontal) surface in the shop. Even the barber chairs were polished relics: chromed muscle with plenty of horsepower under the hoods. Perry was busy running chair #1 with a regular customer, but the banter was free-style with Jerry, too, and the talk was non-stop low key open mike. Got a great cut at a great price, an old style neck hand-massage treatment, and the chance to take a souvenir photo of Jerry by his chair. Go and set a spell. read more

Likewise, I went to Perry's during a visit to Salt Lake because it was the only barber reviewed on yelp. I called ahead for an appointment, heeding the advice of the yelper below, but there was only one other customer there when I arrived, so I guess I could've walked in. Easy to find due to very convenient location next to Trax and bus lines. It was a great experience. Perry talked football with me and it was good conversation throughout the time. He's also very fast and he was flexible when halfway through the cut I decided I wanted it shorter than I had originally thought. It was 15 bucks, but that included an old-school neck shave, hand-massager thing to the shoulders (that was a first for me), and he gave me a comb on which he had just melted the tips with a lighter so they weren't too sharp. Shortly after I arrived in SLC, I was forced to use one of those chain places (which are average at best). Several weeks later when it was time to cut my hair again, I knew I just had to find a real barber. After reading through several yelp reviews, I came across Perry's shop. I gave him a call, and he was able to squeeze me in at the last second. As soon as I walked into his shop, I knew I made the right decision to come here. As a Yelper in uncharted territory I sometimes feel guilty about not reviewing a new place, but after reading the review on Perry's I had to give it a try. Perry's is as cool as described with old barber shop chairs in an old bare brick space. Parking can be a pain on state, but there is always a garage on exchange place. Perry himself is a talker, but he is the first to make that admission. The cut was fast and professional and he has an eye for what will be good for you, without overruling what you want. I was in and out in 20 minutes without feeling rushed or neglected (he even used his old school hand massager in that time). He is a busy man so be sure to make an appointment. I couldn't be happier with the cut, attention to detail, friendly company, and atmosphere. Take a step back in time to the days when men used to pass time chatting in a barber shop, perched in colossal barber's chairs (I asked Jerry, and mine was from the 1910's). Perry's barber shop has taken something that I have always dreaded and turned it into a relaxing and much looked forward to event. I was hoping that my cut at Perry's was going to be as the ones I have received at Ray's, since it is within walking distance of my apartment. I walked in so I didn't get Perry himself, but his brother. Both guys were nice enough and made pleasant conversation. The haircut took a bit longer than I'd expected, and I'm not entirely psyched about how it looks. I put a good part of the blame on my curly hair, unless I'm just getting it shaved off it's a pain to cut. I will probably go back and give them another shot. I had an appointment at 4 and I couldn't find a parking spot so I parked three blocks away and I walk back.
