The absolute best part of Destrehan Animal Hospital is our veterinarian, Dr. Gina Goodier. She has handled our pets primary care, vaccines, dentals illnesses, and emergencies for many years and has always been amazing. She takes the time to understand and answer my concerns as a pet owner and thoroughly explains any medical problems as well as any lab results, treatment plans, and/or medications needed. Dr. Gina is an absolute ROCKSTAR in the veterinary community.

My 3 year old cat Chloe was throwing up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. She was not eating,…read moredrinking water or using the bathroom. She was lethargic and would not jump to lay in the window or get on the bed. She had eaten some of our rabbit Sparrow's hay. Some of it came up in her vomit. I was concerned that she had an intestinal blockage because of her throwing up and not going to the restroom. On Monday morning I went to her vet at Destrehan Animal Hospital at 8:00. I did not have an appointment but I was very concerned about Chloe's condition. My daughter and I were very upset. When I explained to the front desk what was going on with Chloe and asking if we could see the vet to get her checked they got her chart ready. I told them that I would not be able to pay today but on Wednesday when my husband's check comes in. I was called to a room where the office manager told me that the vet recommended that I go to either of these other vet offices. One was in Westwego and the other one in New Orleans because they do not do payment plans and the vet (Chloe's doctor) was busy with other patients. I was shocked! We have been taking our dog Daisy to Destrehan Animal Hospital for 13 years and our cat Chloe for 3 years yet her vet would not see her even though it is an emergency. I took Chloe to the vet in Westwego. They were shocked as well that her vet would not see her. This other vet had an office full of other patients to see and had surgery for his patients but agreed to take Chloe. They are keeping her possibly til Thursday. She has a fever and is dehydrated so she is getting fluids. They are watching her and running some tests to see what is going on with her. Dr. Carter would not even look at Chloe or take an x-ray of Chloe because she said it wouldn't show anything (not true!) but the vet at the office in Westwego took an x-ray and it shows a blockage and gas in her intestines. After leaving the vet I went to Destrehan Animal Hospital and got Daisy and Chloe's medical records and told them how upset I was that they refused to treat Chloe even though it was an emergency and she was their patient. I have ALWAYS paid for every visit and never had an issue. After 13 years of going there... I will NOT be going back! If they can't take care of their own patient during an emergency because of money and sent me to another vet they won't have either of my pets as patients. My cat is still at the vet hospital in Westwego and will probably have to have surgery because she still has not eaten or gone to the restroom since Friday. Dr. Carter's priority is money first then patient. Horrible!!

The first day the girl insults my dog who was a six month old Pomeranian as ugly. Pomeranians go through a ugly period at the age of six months. I overlooked her ignorance. Peace of Mind is bonded and insured. Ms. Creel is the proprietor and a Registered Veterinary Technician. She offers a couple of levels of service, visiting the house as needed or even sleeping over to care for pets. Ms. Creel met us at the house. She provide references and proof of insurance. We worked through a checklist of the dog's needs and habits. She then spent time with the dog. We agreed on a twice a day schedule to visit the house which included a substantial walk every evening. She also agreed to pick up the newspaper, mail and water a few plants. While we were away, Ms. Creel took great care of our shedding monster. She texted us regularly with updates, and left a running series of notes on how the day went. We have used Ms. Creel 3X in the past year and hope to continue using her. It is about twice the cost of boarding the dog which is well worth the peace of mind (no pun intended). I strongly recommend Peace of Mind and Ms. Creel. My family had an abysmal experience with this shelter. We have been looking for a small dog to…read moreserve as a certified emotional support animal for my mom, who lives alone in an apartment. She found one, submitted her application and apartment lease, and was approved. She was asked to come meet the dog and, as long as the meeting went well, complete the adoption that day. I left work early, picked up my daughter early from camp, and then my mom (who lives 30 minutes in the opposite direction) to make the hour-long drive to complete the process. When we arrived a little after 3 p.m., we were shown to the interaction room by a man and woman who were either staff members or volunteers. As soon as the man left to retrieve the dog, the woman proceeded to tell us that the dog we were meeting and planning to adopt actually belonged to the man; he had had to surrender it due to his living situation, but just that morning had been able to find an alternative place to live and was hoping to get his dog back if my mom's adoption fell through. At this point, despite the male staff/volunteer returning with the dog, it was clear that my mom's adoption was never going to be approved. And it wasn't. Ultimately, they claimed that they had "suddenly" become aware that the dog was not suitable for apartment living and denied my mom's application. We ended up seeing the director, who couldn't even make eye contact with us and who just kept mumbling the same excuse for denying my mom's adoption. After an hour drive there, and forty-five minutes of awkward, frustrating, and completely wasted time at the shelter, we walked away with no dog and not so much as a sincere apology from the director or anyone on her staff to begin the hour-long drive back home. To be clear, I do not begrudge the staff member/volunteer his dog. My issue is the extreme unprofessionalism the staff and director exhibited. My mom's application and living situation had been approved, but someone on the staff decided they wanted their dog back. Why was the dog still listed? Why was my mom not notified of the change in situation before we made the two hour trip (more, when factoring in the distance I had to travel to pick up and drop off my mom) there and back? Why were we shown the dog and subjected to a frustrating and awkward situation, when it was clear from the get-go that this member of the staff was taking back his dog? Why did no one have the decency to just be straight with us and say, "Look, here's the situation. We are so sorry." Even that would have gone a long way. TL;DR--Had a completely inappropriate and unprofessional experience with this shelter's staff and director. Be wary of traveling to adopt here if you don't live in the immediate area.
