I run a registered nonprofit animal rescue in South Carolina. We recently took in a golden retrieve…read morewho spent most of his young life in a crate. His owners were putting him to sleep because they didnt want a dog (was originally belonged to their daughter) and they wanted to go on vacation. He's since been placed with a foster family who decided almost immediately that Lucky belonged with them permanently. I started working on getting this poor dog in for vaccines and a skin scrape as he has massive hotspots. He needed his vaccines so he could go to the groomers as he really needed the matting taken care of. I called SCAH last week and explained Luckys situation ensuring it wouldn't be a issue. They had no problem providing me a quote and immediately booking his appointment. I was told "we work with a lot of rescues and adopted dogs" His foster mom arrived early with Lucky and sat in the waiting room. Lucky was great in the waiting room...barked at a cat but never growled or aggressively tried to get to the feline. He was being sweet with tail wags to everyone who came up to him. He was doing so much better than he was when they took him home a few weeks ago. They called Luck to the back at 9:53 and they were dismissed at 10:03. Why? Because Lucky being nervous dropped to the floor and let out a low growl, not a snarl, he didn't fly off the handle. His foster immediately reassured him and offered to muzzle him for his exam. The vet told her no that wouldnt work the exact quote "Oh no! He can chew right through that!". Which lets be honest is impossible if the muzzle is fitted correctly.  The foster asked about sedation. She was told "I cant do that this morning. I'm not putting myself and staff at risk". He acted like Lucky was a vicious sog snarling and chomping at everyone over a simple low growl at the beginning. Then they asked her to leave as he was "too dangerous" but not before the doctor pulled her to the side to urge her to not adopt him. His reason? Luckys obvious aggressiveness and the fact that she has children. *eye roll*  His foster informed the vet that Lucky is not aggressive, that he is simply scared. Assured him that the children are always monitored with Lucky and he has never so much as growled at the kids. She explained how nobody has ever given him a chance or the opportunity to acclimate to new things. This vet ought to be ashamed that his FEAR was allowed to take precedence and to combat that he chose to lable the dog as aggressive. I really hope nobody has taken their dogs into him for a behavior evaluation as he will let his nervousness take the front seat on that one. Absolutely unbelievable.
