I was further impressed to learn that Alex had worked for a veterinarian as an assistant. Alex is a true dog lover and it shows. My two "girls" are not the friendliest on earth, but they took to Alex immediately. He just has a way about him that dogs respond to. Every weekday Alex picks up my two pups to take them out with one or two other wonderful dogs. He takes them to places like Fort Funston and Pulgas Ridge, where our dogs can run. There has never been a single problem, ever. And the girls come home grinning each and every day. Alex even sends us a photograph or two that he took that day of the girls having their fun. Alex also provides really convenient ancillary services, such as nail trimming, anal gland expression, and house sitting. Alex is incredibly responsible, wonderful with our girls, and, on top of everything, reasonably priced! I cannot recommend Powers Pets more strongly.

In looking at Ruff Ruff's website I was initially pleased to discover they are Diamond Certified. I signed up for the Group Hike service for my dog to be done once a week while I was at work. I was told my dog would be picked up at my house around mid-day and would be returned after at least a full hour of hiking. At first Bettina was the one who did the hikes and I would always get notes placed on my kitchen counter as to where my dog went for the day and how much he had fun. For some reason, Bettina no longer picked up my dog and it was Joey (I believe that's his name) started to do my route. A friend of mine was over at my house and called me at 5:30pm to say that my dog was just picked up. I was completely surprised as this was not the mid-day pick up I was told of. Additionally, since it was winter 5:30 was too dark to go on any hikes! I immediately rushed home to try and meet the dog walker on his return to my house but by the time I got home (within 30 minutes) my dog was already there. Again I was upset that my dog was not even exercised for one hour. My dog did not even look tired. And to add to that, the walker left me a note and said my dog had a great time. So now I wonder how long this had been going on; my paying for this service and all they did was come over and leave me notes saying my dog had a great time. Needless to say I cancelled services immediately. Being Diamond Certified doesn't necessarily mean a great company will provide great service.

So it is scary to think how long he has been taking payments and not following through on his dog training lessons. We found Kevin and Leash Loverz on bark.com. We put in our info and dog training needs on bark.com and Kevin responded immediately via text. In a few mins, he was calling and asking for more details on our dog training needs and advertising his rates. We set up an initial consultation and he met us and our 2 dogs at our home. He spent 1 hour working with us to demonstrate his training techniques and what we can expect if we decided to hire him. Everything appeared great and we decided to sign a contract for 8 lessons. He offered that if we paid up front, he would give us a discount because PayPal charges him $50 to use their app. We believed him and paid him up front. Our next session, he showed up 10 mins late, but we had a good training session with our 2 dogs. Our 2nd session, the morning of, 2 hours before hand, Kevin texted saying his grandparent was ill and had to reschedule. We understood and planned to meet the next week. Our 3rd session, he did not show. When we texted him, he stated he double booked us with another client and if he could come in 2 hours. We agreed. But in 30 mins, he texted back saying the client had to leave and he could come to us in 30 mins. We had a session that day but 1 hour later than our scheduled time. Our 4th session, we met Kevin at our local park. He explained we needed to add distractions to our training which made sense. However, he had us training the dogs in the middle of the street with several cars driving by. I told him I would feel more comfortable training on the basketball court where it is safer for the dogs. Our 5th session, we planned to meet at the park again but Kevin did not show. We called and texted but no response. Phone calls went straight to voicemail. 30 mins after, he texted us back with a long explanation that his phone died. He was in Oakland helping his girlfriend with some car trouble. He promised to PayPal us for the misses session. We never got refunded the money. But we planned to meet the next week. Next session, Kevin did not show again. At the scheduled time, he texted us saying he would not be able to make it and that he would then refund us for 2 missed sessions. We never received a refund. He then continued to text that if we could give him another chance to meet the next week. And that he did not have the means to pay us the refund. That he was waiting til the next week to get money. This was a terrible experience and I have since wrote to Wag, Bark, and PayPal about Kevin Kirkish to monitor and remove him from their companies. I hope this does not happen to any other pet owners because it was distressing to us and to our pets. We invested time on our days off to be active in our dog's training but were not given the proper training. We also noticed that our dogs were stressed after our training sessions. After training days, our dogs would knock down the treat bin and eat everything in site. When we consulted Kevin, his only response was to give them treats as a reward after training. Kevin also did not use treats to train our dogs. Instead, he provided choke collars and leather leashes. He taught us to only use quick snaps of the collar as a guidance to train our dogs to sit, stay, and heal. Our dogs did well with sit/stay. However, heal was never really learned. I feel like the dogs were over worked and over choked in my honest opinion. Kevin shared with us that his only training is from his father, a past dog trainer. It did worry me that he did not have any formal training or experience.

Pricing is also very reasonable, especially compared to other groomers in the Millbrae/Burlingame area. Scheduling appointments by text is super convenient, and I especially appreciate the grooming and nail trim reminders since life gets busy. Unfortunately, that was not my experience at all. Gizmo was in pain for about a month afterward, which was extremely upsetting to watch. What made the situation even more disappointing was that the groomer offered no compensation for the grooming service and no assistance with his veterinary bill resulting from the injury. Mistakes can happen, but I expected the business to take responsibility when an injury occurred, especially when my dog was left in pain for weeks. The lack of concern and follow-up was just as disappointing as the injury itself. I would not recommend this groomer based on my experience. I hope they take situations like this more seriously in the future and prioritize the safety and well-being of the animals in their care.
