Having owned three dogs and two cats, I spent my fair share of time at vets throughout Southern Illinois. After trying to save money by going to some of the more inexpensive clinics in the region, I learned not to risk my pet's life to save money. Though on the pricey side, Pet Wellness Center is, in my book, the best veterinary clinic in Marion, and possibly in the region. Dr. Smith and his staff are warm and personable. The office manager, Kathy, succeeds in giving the place its welcoming atmosphere--her cute, friendly personality shines through as she drops whatever she's doing to greet the pets and chat with the owners. The vet techs (especially Melissa), and the rest of the support staff are patient, and eager to answer any questions. The office is immaculately clean, very modern-looking, and they sell a variety of foods, grooming tools, and leashes. Yes, you'll spend more than you would at Wal-mart or PetCo, but I think it's important to support this country's small businesses. I should mention that they also offer boarding for cats and dogs, and at a very low nightly rate. The area where the dogs are walked is kept well-manicured and clean. I live in Chicago now, but I'm planning to take my dog with me all the way to Marion in a couple of months, just to get his shots and groomed here. read more

Dr. Smith is in the wrong line of work. Uncaring, unprofessional, and inept towards my pet and I. Had us sitting in an office for 1.5 hrs as I watched other patients come and go. He was intentionally skipping us for some reason. Perhaps his age and mental capacity played a factor. I'd hate to speculate. If it weren't for Nurse Jaime I would have let him know about himself. Great staff; incompetent 'doctor.' I can understand the high employee turnover rate there with him as the owner. Unpleasant individual. I don't recommend him for anyone or anything you care about. I don't like this Pet Wellness Vet facility or Great Paws Pet Lodge Kennel/grooming care. I have had experience with both over the last few years and have been less than impressed each time. I knew they were not great, but trusted they would provide my dogs with the basic needs all living things require. My most recent experience was disillusioning, and confirmation of the incompetence pervasive throughout these two facilities. After leaving my dogs in their care for a five-night period, I returned to find one of my dogs in need of immediate healthcare. His labored breathing and deep hoarse cough were strong indicators something was seriously wrong. My own vet immediately placed him in oxygen, not sure he would survive the night. He was severely dehydrated, with fever and labored breathing. My daily phone calls to this kennel gave me assurance my dogs were doing fine; however, the day I returned to get my dogs, I noticed they were not being cared for according to the instructions I left or their agreement to follow them. My effort to return to this kennel to inform them of my dog's condition and gain information about their routines and protocols while my dogs were in their care, proved futile. I was told there was nobody available to help me. When I inquired about mgt., I was told there was none. I asked about the hierarchy of mgt, however, nobody knew anything about that or who it involved. When I told them I would be filing a police report and contacting my atty in an effort to get the information I was seeking, it resulted in a hostile response from the person who suddenly appeared as manager on duty that night; and I was told I could be escorted out and told I'm not welcome there. They were not interested in my observation that my dog's water bowl was empty when I arrived to get him or that the food bowl filled to the brim with a lot of dry food spilled across the floor, may have been factors in his condition. They expressed no interest in the condition of my dog or in the desire to take note to prevent this from occurring to another pet. Their inability to be forthcoming with information and their evasive nature in spite of their mission statement and their statement on Great Paws Lodge website proclaiming their dedication to you and your pet, is worth noting. I am posting this review because transparency in business and customer service is important, and because it will strengthen the pattern clearly emerging in the reviews for this business. read more

i can honestly say i HATE this place and won't be going back. i loved the first visit i had with them, after that it just kept going DOWNHILL. first, my dog had heart worm treatment a couple months ago, had to pay $3000 for it.. it was quoted like $1800-$2000.. then i took my dog there today because she wasn't walking right, her back legs kept coming out from underneath her and she can't keep her balance, she's running into the walls, doors, and everything else, she has rapid eye movement, a head tilt, and she threw up last night and was coughing.. paid $300 for them to ONLY look at her and take her blood and urine.. they came back and said nothings wrong with her and sent us home with an anti-inflammatory medication "in case" she pulled something in her back... i called about the rapid eye movement after the visit and they said she's probably just over stimulated and let her lay in the dark with air conditioning.. WHAT? i'm going somewhere else tomorrow morning ASAP because something is just NOT RIGHT. They are also just NOT FRIENDLY, and they OVER CHARGE!! Quotes are never right and they DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR ANIMAL!! edit: TOOK HER TO WEST FRANKFORT ANIMAL HOSPITAL AND THEY SAID SHE HAS AN INNER EAR INFECTION CAUSING VESTIBULAR PROBLEMS!! she has to have 4 medications, ear drops, and had to have 2 shots!! and it was STILL $70 CHEAPER THAN PET WELLNESS EVEN THOUGH PET WELLNESS TOLD ME NOTHING IS WRONG WITH HER AND SENT HER HOME!! I called to complain, and was told a manager would call me back about a refund. NEVER got a call back. I called back the next day, and after a heated discussion where they tried to give me the run around and smooth me over, they say it's not possible to receive a refund and they will be calling me tomorrow. Not sure what for, but will be looking forward to it!! I paid $570 TOTAL between both facilities to find out my dog has an INNER EAR INFECTION!! ALMOST $600!! RIDICULOUS!! read more

Came in with my kitten kiwi to get his tail surgery. If you want to wait 2 hours have them book wrong appointments every single time practically torture your cat charge you an arm and a leg then go ahead and get your cat to pet wellness. The staff have no knowledge of how to handle pets while the vet removes sutures from my cat unmedicated kiwi bit the vet. Well what is the cat gonna do let you do it? Honestly the staff is uneducated and very slow service charged me 1200 for the bite didn't see who got bit or the bite was just told. I think it's a set up. A terrible place in general, terrible techs and vets that misdiagnosed my animal after months of seeking treatment there until he passed from a fungal lung infection at 3 years old. They did not care our animal passed. We had to call management multiple times until the vets found out they allowed my dog to suffer too long and he died. They charged us full price for running pointless tests on him that he had previously had done with them weeks ago. They blocked me from messaging them, commenting on their PUBLIC BUSINESS PAGE because they still need their money. Other animals have died because of their hunger for money also. I've been here a few times with my own animals and my daughters since she had to work, I would take them. Doctors seem knowledgeable and for the most part are nice. However, each time I have gone there, the wait in the room is ridiculous. I wasn't going to go back, yesterday I thought I would give it one more shot. We were in general waiting area for about 15 minutes and then stuck in a room for an hour before the doctor came in and all together by the time we got out of the room, it was an hour and 1/2 later when we walked out of the room. Seen the doctor all of 10 minutes, the rest was wait time and waiting on meds. Knowone has time for this kind of wait now days. We did not even get an apology for the doctor being so late. I asked if she had an emergency or something and they said No. Probably will not go back anymore. read more

If you like being shoved in a room this is the place for you. I and many other people do not. They Called and told me to pick up my dog at 2:30. Okay no problem, show up on time. Get told wait in this room they will be right with you. 1 hour later. I go and ask about my dog they don't even know who my dog is they have to ask again. I would go back, but not back to the room, I will sit out front and wait. Time is money they still wanted me to pay for their time but nothing for mine. So an hour and a half later I am leaving, just to pick up one animal. I found out afterwards because my wife was waiting in the car the whole time that 3 other people walked in pick up their animal and left. read more

We were disappointed with the big up sale they tried on us when we dropped our dog off for boarding. Despite having our vet fax over all records and me following up by phone to ensure that they had everything needed, they tried to charge us for unnecessary medical treatment. It felt like a time share type approach - sound awesome on the phone and assure us everything is in order but then try to coerce us into other things in person. They even had us go into a small room with a boarding tech to go over everything and to hear her pitch. We were furious. It took over 30 minutes to get our puppy dropped off after putting up with all of this.Then, when you pick up your dog, you have a half hour window for pick up on a Sunday or you have to pay extra and pick up the next day. read more

I brought my pet and saw dr Ashe and thought he was an exceptional doctor, however I saw a lack of professionalism from another doctor there. The doctor who owns the practice and one of his technicians were very engaged within there eyes and whispering. I am not sure if they are married or not either way they should not do that in front of client. I wish I could bring my dog back to see dr Ashe however I do not want to spend my hard earned money to promote those kind of activities. I would be ashamed if I were that doctor. read more
