This is always our go to pet store, my daughter likes how many various animals there are to look at. The puppies are a plus for her too, but sadly I'm not a fan of pet stores that sell pups. Went to pet world looking for cat food, there wasnt any. Saw they had puppies- an Aussiepoo??? An Austrian Sheppard poodle mix? Looked up the "breeder" and they're labeled as a puppy mill breeder. The animals have horrible enclosures and I feel horrible for them. I'm all for supporting a small business, but they need a reality check when it comes to caring for animals. My groomer cancelled 3 times and now my dog can barely see ! I understand that things happens! Would give 0 stars if I could. My husband and I stopped by in hopes of taking a puppy home, but the staff brushed us off. The man working in the puppy area had an awful attitude and cut me off before I could finish speaking and stated "I'm busy cleaning right now." And simply left me and my husband behind. We waited for a good hour for him to get back to us but he never came back. Happy to say this place is a waste of time, puppies are covered in their own poop and pee in the kennel, awful staff. Stopped in while driving by. I was looking for a dog frisbee, they had one but too expensive. What they did have were all kinds of wildlife. I had no idea. You get hit with the smell walking in, it's powerful. It seemed old and dingy. They had exotic stuff from fish, ferrets, snakes, tarantulas, birds, cockroaches and even live pups. Too many species under one roof IMO. It's like an animal hoard. They do carry axolotls! Who does that? First time to see one in person. Good sales people. read more

When I first walked in it was organized. And maintained to the best of there ability. The two employees that helped me were super nice and helpful. It was a little over priced but in a pinch would work. some of the fish tanks were undesirable to say the least, the cherry shrimp and the blood red shrimp We're all infested with parasites. So I would never by fish here. The dog groom area seemed gross but I didn't go to far in. They had puppys for sale I don't believe in pet store puppys. So that's a personal thing for me. rabbits and guinea pigs are in small wire cages the type of cages that you're told are wrong when you buy a guinea pig or a rabbit I could think of 10 million different ways to set that up. They have the space for it. but I think out of everything the biggest turn off was an older gentleman with a dog inside The store was hanging out. The dog seem to have something wrong with it like mange. but I didn't want the dog to touch me. I absolutely love dogs, but I don't want strangers dog walking up on me and trying to lick my hands and my feet and rubbing up on me and rubbing their Scally scuzzy back on me, I told the gentleman to get his dog away from me and I didn't want the dog to touch me and he didn't do anything about it so I left and stopped looking and shopping. read more

My boyfriend and I usually come here to get fish supplies since they're close by but we fell in love with a white albino baby rabbit. We told staff we wanted to take him home and he was put in a dirty poop-filled cricket shipping box. When the cashier checked to see what sex he was he said "ew you're gross" as he had loose poop caked in his genitals. We got him home and being that I have experience owning rabbits and have 7yrs vet experience, we got to work on cleaning him up. His anus and scent glands were caked full of feces. After getting him on a proper diet his stools started to become normal after about 48 hours. We noticed a slight swaying of his head and were working on getting him into his vet for a check up. Unfortunately, our little boy died on the 7th day we had him. We were so sad to lose him and just happy he was in a loving home, given a name, and well cared for even if just a week. We don't want refunds as money doesn't replace a life. We just want better husbandry, staff education of animals needs and better care for the animals in their store. We hope our loss of Newt saves another animal's life. read more

Would put 0 stars if I could. First off, I walked in and was looking at the cavies as I have two of my own. They were... dirty. One of the turtles was face down in the food pile- DEAD. I casually joked that he was dead (I don't know if and how turtles sleep) but he was ACTUALLY dead. I had to report it to the staff who seemed pissed off I pointed that out. Didn't remove him until I said it front of another customer. The legless lizard (snake) had some weird skin thing going on and was trying to escape through the sliding glass- which was easily accessible. One of the gold fish was floating upside down (still alive) and suffering. I decided to look at one of the puppies- just to see her physical state. She had ring worm on her ear. Probably more medical problems as most puppy mill puppies do. I only know this from a puppy I rescued a few years ago. Oh and DONT send your dog to get groomed there. This lady was aggressively brushing- no not even- she was ripping through this chihuahua's coat with a wire brush. I would fight anyone who was handling my dog like that. This place is a DISGRACE. It's DISGUSTING. If you're going to run an already GROSS pet store at least have employees who care about the state of the animals. Wash your tanks. Clean your cages. Probably one of the worst experience ever. We purchased a King Charles and the puppy was malnourished and had to be taken to for an emergency vet visit 2 days letter and then hospital for the remainder of the weekend. Pet World never attempted to reach out to me after discussing what happen with vets. They only gave me the option for them to take care of her until she's better. To do a return and call me when she's better and I can repurchase her. David is extremely rude and Sheree as well. If they sold me a sick puppy and didn't know apparently until I took her to the vet out of concern why would I trust them to take care of her? All they can say is this never happens but why can't you leave reviews on Facebook or post to the wall anymore? I feel bad for the puppy and I want to keep her but why should I pay for the errors of the pet shop. We invested so much into her over the weekend and I'm really hoping they WILL call me when she's better but my experience with them so far is that they're lying & wont do it. We donate extra tropical fish from time to time. We raise convict cichlids and hybrids and get alot of enjoyment from this hobby. We turned in convicts and several other types as well. Usually, it's been by donation only, but yesterday (I'm assuming it was the manager) gave us a hefty store credit for them! After a year of getting back into this hobby (after a 30 year hiatus), we FINALLY feel like we are in control of our tanks (and not the many, many fish so much). They have a great selection of tropical fish, I was impressed and found it VERY HARD to leave without buying more fish! Terrible staff. If I could rate negative stars I would. Went in to look at some puppies and the older white lady in the back had the worst attitude known to man. Basically was told if we weren't going to purchase anything then she wasn't going to let us see the puppies. First, I looked at the Guinea pigs because I was debating on getting one for my daughter. Right above those were hamsters and to say the least, one hamster was dead inside with another hamster. The girl that was tending to them literally glanced at it, tapped on the glass then walked away and didn't return. We spent a little over 35 minutes in there and I feel sorry for all the animals in this place. If I could buy them all and give them a better home I would definitely do that because they are not being cared for properly here. The manager Sheree has made some excellent changes in this location and has really turned the place around over the years. She has hired a staff that believes in customer service and they do their best to ensure a great experience while you are their. Their more recent promotions and advertisements in the last year have been very impressive and it's great to see small businesses coming back to life and contributing to the well-being of the community. The selection that Pet World offers is considerable and they are always willing to special order things they do not have on hand. They keep pure bread small dogs on hand and the dog grooming staff is second to none. They maintain a wide variety of fish (fresh and salt water), rodents of various shapes and sizes, and reptiles from tortoises to snakes and lizards. They have an impressive stock of food and supplies for every type of animal they sell as well. BUYER BEWARE-DO NOT PURCHASE SALTWATER FISH FROM THIS STORE!!! As of this review, my 75-gallon tank has been fully set up and running since 02/01/2020. I have 80 pounds of live gravel/sand, about 100 pounds of live rock (added over time), 10 hermit crabs, 7 turbo snails, had two emerald crabs, an anemone and several fish that had been in the tank 18 days prior and longer. So, the tank is healthy and ready for more expensive fish. Weekly water tests have been done at home as well as tested at another trusted, locally owned pet store in the area. They have assured us every time; we are doing things correctly. On April 17th I visited the store to see if they had any new fish to add to my tank. They had a beautiful Koran Angel for $50. It seemed to be swimming a little oddly, so we inquired about the fish. We were told they had just gotten the fish the day prior, so it was still acclimating. On April 20th, we revisited the store to see how the Koran was doing and to check out other fish again. It was swimming better, but the sales associate still didn't feel comfortable allowing it to go to a new home, so she offered to put the fish on hold for us to pick up on a later date if it was doing better or to call and let them know if we did not want it. We showed up on Friday...and could not find our "on hold" fish. After finishing the rest of our shopping, we went to the check out counter and inquired about our fish. A young girl jumped from behind the counter and told us "oh, no...he is still here...I moved him cause he wasn't getting enough food". I noticed the other lady we had been dealing with on this fish had an odd look on her face and she attempted to say something but was interrupted by the young girl with "I got it". This should have been our 1st red flag!!! Upon arriving to the tank he was in, she quickly scooped him up in a plastic container along with rocks and gravel (therefore making the water cloudy) and showed the fish to us. "He is doing very well and is ready to go home". 2nd red flag-I really should have asked for it to be put back in the tank so I could see him swim, but I really wanted this fish so I did not think at the time I was being lied to. They bag him up, along with 3 sword-tail chromis and we head to check out. We get home, set up our dripper to acclimate out 4 new fish and let them sit for 3 hours until adding them to our tank. We noticed almost immediately, this angel was swimming oddly, just as the first day we saw it and his color appeared off-he was almost fuzzy-looking on one side. In prior years of owning a saltwater tank, I am familiar with color changes when acclimating, so I shrug it off, feed the tank, tun out the lights and head to bed. The next morning, it was very clear I was going to lose this fish. HE DID NOT MAKE IT 24 hours. By the time he died, its side was COVERED in white spots and it was in fact fuzzy. We immediately removed the fish when we found it, fearful it had infected our tank. I should have taken it in Sunday, but I knew there was no guarantee on saltwater fish, so I froze it and continued with my day. Once I returned home that evening, I found a dead emerald crab and an ill looking scooter blenny. On Monday, I lost the scooter blenny and one of the chromis I purchased the same day. And almost EVERY SINGLE day since, I have lost at least one fish. This Angel has DESTOYED my tank. I have lost the 3 chromis, 1 regular clown fish (1 that has been in the tank since my "starter fish"), a black clown fish, a scoter and lawnmower blenny, a hawkfish, an emerald crab and a Fairy Wrasse. $250 worth of fish...all because of 1 fish I purchased at this store! My family member decided to visit the store today to discuss our past two weeks of losing fish with the Manager on duty. She did not seem to care, nor apologize that her staff member blatantly sold us an ill fish. She informed us that they do not sell ill fish and would never do that. After a long discussion, no clarity was given. It was determined that we have something fungal in our tank and offered to sell us something to remove it. We declined, #1, since I will NEVER purchase anything from this store again and #2, they did not have anything to treat my tank that safe for my anemone. They tested our water and, again, we were told everything was right on par. So, why...why have we lost 11 fish in 14 days??? I can only assume that the Koran Angel I purchased from this store has wrecked serious havoc on my tank. The few fish I have left, are all starting to get white spots. We can only assume this is ick and have been using garlic to try and rid this funk to attempt not losing anything else in the tank. My fingers are crossed. Please save yourself from the headache, heartache and serious loss of money this place has created for us. read more

AWFUL GROOMING. My friend came here not too long ago to get her dog done, when she picked him up the groomer was cussing and screaming with someone on her phone and didn't pay attention to my friend AT ALL so she had to wait until the groomer got off the phone. I decided to bring my dog in because they have the cheapest prices and I assumed she probably just had a bad day. I brought my dog to this store today to get a simple bath done and when I picked her up she was still covered in stains and was flinching once I picked her up. One of the other groomers seemed very concerned about her behavior but she had face tattoos, piercings, and devil eyebrows and I will NEVER trust evil witches with my dog ever. Well the first thing I noticed about this place was the smell - and it wasn't good. Yes, I realize that pet stores smell like pets but this was a little on the overwhelming side of things. The place was overall kind of dirty and dingy, for example: by the bird cages they had not swept up all the seeds and bird padding (newspaper) which was all over the floors around the cages. They had dogs in the back of the store in display cages; they did look like they were pretty well cared for. This location also had spiders, snakes, hermit crabs, fish, birds, ferrets, and more. I honestly don't think I would buy a pet from this location because of the cleanliness, or lack thereof. Staff was friendly but it honestly seemed like a bunch of college aged friends that got together and decided to work for a pet store. Weird experience overall. read more

I don't know what they did or what they used but pets with sensitive skin should not groom here. My pet hasnt stopped scratching herself since. But they couldn't have known that. I visited Pet World while in town. I was actually happy to see them still in business. To me they are the definition of a true Pet store, one you can actually see, interact and purchase living animals. I read about the smell on a few reviews, it smells like pets... what is it supposed to smell like, roses? It's a place that sells animals... that being said, it was fine to me considering. I don't have any real complaints except the prices of puppies range between $1500-$1900! I just think that's unreasonable. It's getting harder and harder to find a legit place to purchase healthy pure bred pups. In my mind your neighborhood pet store should be the most trustworthy and affordable because it's your neighborhood primarily supporting the business unlike the online businesses that don't care where their money comes from. Sorry I'm not an advocate of the idea that the more money you pay the better care you'll give to an animal, that logic is proven false even with human children -- spending money on them doesn't necessarily equate to you actually caring for them genuinely- it may just mean you got money to burn. Consider lowering the prices so that moderate income families can at least afford a quality healthy puppy to love. Many of the complaints I read about this store are customer service related, my question is why is that such a big problem for this business to fix? Offer the best experience and value and this place would boom with customers. read more

If I could give this business "0" stars I would! Today after work, I stopped at Pet World in Hampton, Virginia. We typically spend a minimum of $200.00 monthly on pet supplies. My girls wanted to look at the animals prior to making our purchase. As we looked at the fish, I noticed numerous dead ones floating in tanks. I can understand a few here and there, but it seemed excessive. In the back of the store, I noticed puppies and we walked back to look. The dogs were in tiny cages, and they were clearly "pure breeds". I haven't seen a pet store with dogs in years. All of the chain stores that I have visited work with local shelters to keep animals from being euthanized. I took my items to the front cash register to pay. While I was there, I inquired as to where the puppies may have come from.....I would be willing to bet money they came from a puppy mill. As soon as I asked, the checkout girl became extremely rude and loud. I said that I was sorry, but that I do not support selling pure breds. She and her various coworkers began to shout sarcastically at me and my two children. I highly recommend that no one shops there, and to read other reviews from former customers. Elementary school children are far more polite than these immature employees. I was actually shocked by their obnoxious, ridiculous, inappropriate behavior. read more

They have received numerous complaints about animal cruelty and neglect, and instead of acknowledging complaints and fixing things, they will delete your comments on their facebook page and block you from posting. They sell dogs from known puppy mills, and will feed you BS such as "all of our breeders are USDA licensed", which doesn't mean anything except they have so many animals that they need USDA licensing. Don't give this store a dime of your money. look into more reputable pet stores in the area that treat their animals with some decency. read more

**ATTENTION** please do not buy from this pet store!! I checked this place out to buy my first leopard gecko and I highly regret it now. The baby leo started showing sick symptoms from the first day we got her and refused to eat for over a month. Turns out she had worms and other parasites. The vet bills have been very costly and she may not even make it. Leopard geckos are supposed to live about 15-20 years and our lil baby is barely hanging out at just a few months old. When I called this store back to ask for tips on how to get her to eat, the employee just told me "she'll eat eventually when she's hungry." TERRIBLE customer service and showed very little concern about the sick animal they had just sold to us. The employee even sounded defensive when all I wanted to do was get information on how to properly care for a sick gecko. Since they refused to help, I had to contact other pet stores for advice and multiple employees told me that Pet World has a bad reputation for selling sick animals as this is not the first time someone reaches out after purchasing from them. One employee even told me that her dog got sick too and died shortly after buying from Pet World. Purchasing from this location has been the worst mistake I've ever made and I hope this experience will inform others of what can possibly happen if they purchase animals from this pet store. This place was a horrible experience for my son and I. I bought a bird that die not even a month later due to being scammed and sold a old bird which was dying anyway. I was told that the bird was a baby due i soon found out I was lied too! I don't really want to give this store even one star. The bird cages look okay, but all the parakeets were huddled to close in one cage. The paroletes did not have any toys to play with so they just say there. The African grey only had one toy. Not enough stimulation for the baby birds! The puppies looked pretty well cared for so that's good. Now the fish. I would not buy fish from tho store. Half of them looked sick or dead, a small crab had the legs on one half if his body ripped off, laying upside down. There was a tank with two large fish (oscars maybe) in it and the water was blood red. One fish was laying on its side with a chunk of flesh missing while the other fish was still in the tank. I would not buy any fish from here and would only consider buying a bird just to save it from having to be in that store any longer. read more

Came in to browse around only to find dead / sick animals in their cramped cages. Animals climbing over dead bodies. I notified staff and lingered around the shop about 30 minutes and no one had yet to take care of the animals. Was truly disgusted with the animals care and staff members ignoring my comments as I was standing by the cages staring at them (no they weren't tending to customers) and was absolutely jaw dropped. The store had been open for a few hours. No excuse for dead animals in the cages. The filth the animals are in is also unacceptable. Absolutely stinks. I've been in that store a few times and each experience is the same. I refuse to ever walk back in that store again. There is absolutely no excuse for this neglect. I've also caught them mixing up the sexes up of their animals (watch out for their guinea pigs especially). I'm sure it leads to many 'oops' babies. Do note, I'm not saying as a whole all employees at this store may act so neglectful towards the animals. This is from my experiences I've had a handful of times with this store. Everyone would have an attitude and act as though I'm wasting THEIR time. But hopefully those kinds of people are eventually 'let go'. I am very upset. I recently purchased a salcata tortoise and after he got sick I called to find out they give only a 5 day warrabty. Lots of vet bills later I emailed the store to see if they would help i mean he is an exotic animal and I never recieved a response. Apparently they take a long time to show signs they are sick and I never got anything when I bought him showing he was healthy. I believe when your dealing with animals you should be more aware of there health and provide documents with them. My tortoise passed away this morning after I have hand fed him and gave him shots for the past few months. I will never purchase an animal from them again. read more
